Hello and welcome to a very special episode of the Athletic FC Podcast. We have an exclusive interview with one of the biggest names in world football. It is Real Madrid's Killian Mbappé.

Yes, Killian sat down with the athletics Daniel Taylor, and Danny joins me now. Danny, I mean first of all, tell us how this all came about. How did you find yourself at Real Madrid's training ground sitting down with Killian Mbappe?
We started talking maybe three weeks ago, which that's actually very quick to get an interview, especially um with any footballer really in in that time.
How did the interview with Kylian Mbappé come together at Real Madrid’s training ground?
But never mind, you know, a footballer of Mbappe's sort of, you know, status in the world game. I can remember going back a few years and Roberto Mancini when we when he was a manager at Manchester City, I spent like nine months trying to get an interview with him and so yeah, so three weeks was quite quick, quite a quick turnaround, but then equally When you're dealing with a footballer, you know, like a a a a Messi, a Ronaldo, an Mbappe, you know, you can't just say, you know, I'll see you next Tuesday at three o'clock, you know, you don't know what's going on in their lives. So I I spent quite a large part of that three weeks, sort of as probably a little bit of journalistic anxiety that something could go wrong.
Even on the the day before I I flew out to Madrid the day before the interview. Even when I flew out we didn't have a time or location. So my kind of professional anxiety was kind of sky high on the on the plane basically but but yeah they they they told me, they gave me their word and and fair play to them. You know, eventually I got I got told to turn up to Rumad's training ground and and there he was.
Did you sort of learn about the person behind the superstar? 'Cause I feel like with these huge names and sports people at the top of their game, there's almost this kind of presence that you feel as soon as you meet them and this this aura around them. Did he have that?
Yeah, I mean abs absolutely. Um, just natural charisma. You never know what to expect of someone of that that level of fame, but he I mean, he's a walking brand, so I mean he's incredibly polished, very, very comfortable in his own skin. I mean, I I I very rare you would meet somebody with that level of sh self assurance. I suppose a couple of times where it crosses over into arrogance, but I like that arrogance. You know, I I I really feel that It's not misguided arrogance. If you're if you're if you're the level that he is, you know, he talks about himself he describes himself as a global superstar at one point. And when I say arrogance, I don't mean it in in a in a detrimental way at all, you know.
I I really liked him. But even at the end, you know, he he he he was happy to have a little chat, you know, he was asking how the flights were and where we came from and basically, you know, we I I also got the impression because you know, when you when you when you're at his level, you know, you can become a bit cynical, you know, he's always he talked about at one point about wanting to be almost like a gu he phrased it like something you're like like a ghost in his life because he's got so much scrutiny on him. But he also really gave me the impression that he just still really loves football.
Well, without giving too much away then, was there one moment in the interview and in the conversation that that really stuck with you?
Basically, it was when when Mbappe was ten years old that he went into a barber's and asked for a sedan where he basically literally thought it was a haircut style, you know. So he asked to have the nothing on top and little bit around the sides look. Just not realizing being a boy of that age that it just wasn't uh you know, it wasn't particularly cool look.
