There's definitely a bad posture to be stuck in all day. There's definitely positions that'll put pressure on my neck or other joints. You know, we like to think of our head, your head's about five kilos, and that's about a bowling ball. Okay, so if you imagine I have this bowling ball and I'm leaned forward, you know, 10 hours a day at the desk, you know, five, six days a week for 10 years, that's going to add up to a fair amount of strain or demand on my neck muscles.

I was on a business trip with PCMSA around the world. I started in San Francisco, went to Japan, Taiwan, Germany, and it ended up in Brussels where I had this moment of clarity that I needed to walk away. And it was a three and a half week business trip. And it was an awesome business trip, but it was also brutal, as you can imagine, to travel. In that moment, I was actually still dating a beautiful girl. She was from Santa Barbara, tall, blonde, was everything I ever wanted. And so I remember having to come back and tell her that, you know, I think I've been called to the police station. She goes, oh, I knew it. She knew it. There were signs. She had some sense. I was too devout for her.

Today we have the extraordinary story of Father Brendan Maguire, a priest from Bray who runs a parish in Silicon Valley and has become an advisor to anthropic and other AI giants on spiritual, moral and ethical matters. By day, he says mass. By night, he urges reflection and restraint to executives within those AI giants, some of which are now warning of humans being wiped out by the technology. I sat down with Father McGuire to talk about his life, his ministry, the idea of computers having souls, and whether AI might eventually kill us all.
Brendan, you grew up in Bray, and your brothers Cyril and John founded one of the most successful ever Irish tech companies, Trintec. When you were growing up, were you just a very tech-oriented family, or was there someone in the family leading that?
Actually, we were all, I would say we were all entrepreneurial. My father was a very entrepreneurial man, raising 12 children, he had to do something on the side to make. So my mum and dad, my mum ran a B&B, my dad was always an entrepreneur, so we had that in our minds. So I think my brother John was actually the first one to do electronic engineering. So he went to Trinity College into electronic and my brother Paul and I followed. And so from the tech world, we became, that was my other brothers were involved in business and my other brothers were involved in engineering, civil engineering. So we're very different sort of, but we were all entrepreneurial.
Yeah, and you got engineering computer science degrees yourself from Trinity. And then you left for the US in the late 80s, where you set up a company, I think, translating software manuals for the Japanese market. And then you worked as an executive director for an industry body called the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. But at what point did you start to seriously think about your vocation?
Well, you know, to be honest with you, Adrian, I had actually always had that in my mind because in Ireland, I was raised in our, you know, there you go, raised two parents, very seriously devout.
