A rookie quarterback gets drafted to a team where the fans hate the pick. What do you tell that quarterback? What do you tell that quarterback?
Well, at the end of the day, fans are going to have opinions. If they've played in college football, which that's how you normally get to the NFL, you've probably had your adversities, your ups and downs. It's all about blocking out the noise. You didn't get to where you are today and get drafted that high knowing that... You got to take everybody's opinion as the gold standard.
So you have an opportunity to prove it. I mean, one of my mentors, Ken O'Brien from UC Davis, was drafted before Dan Marino in that legendary draft class back in what was it, 82? And the Jets fans hated him, but he went on. To be a Pro Bowl quarterback, he's still an all-time leader in, I think, touchdowns, yards, all that.
He was an outstanding pro and went toe-to-toe with Dan Marino in the same division, all that stuff. They hated the draft pick. But at the end of the day, it's still about going out there and playing and playing well. And then the fans, you'll change that perception really quickly. So it doesn't matter what the fans think. At the end of the day, you still have a job to do.
I would also say in sports and in art, everybody's fickle. Just produce. That's it. People don't even remember what they didn't like. That's 100%. Coach Belichick always used to tell us, he says, look, you want to know what's best for you, your family, your kids, just do your job. You do your job. You go out there, perform. It takes care of everything. If we win...
then nobody's going to be saying this out of the other, or you'll have more people on your side versus we go out there and lose a bunch of games. Everybody's going to be talking. They all have the anecdote to why.

But you've got to be able to deal with some of the adversities. And at the same time, failing sometimes is a huge strength for a young kid to learn how to deal with it. in their own way.
A starting quarterback throws three picks and still has to go out and face the media. What's the veteran move? I've been there a lot. That one's always one where you just have to put on your big boy pants and go out there and take responsibility. And there's been plenty of times where you'd love to sit there and say, hey, well, the guy was supposed to have a 16-yard comeback.
He cut it short by three yards. That threw the timing off. That gave the quarterback a chance.

Because it was exciting, and it kind of really started to focus in on what your schedule was going to look like. But the first game of the year, it always gives you that kind of ā you get fired up. the off season like you know who who's going to be on your schedule you just don't know what your schedule is going to look like but is it going to be at home against the san diego chargers in arrowhead i mean that pretty much fires you up because we had one of those where it was i think it was the opening game like a monday night football game san diego chiefs at arrowhead and you know it was going to be a divisional game it's going to be rocking so you look forward to just that first game i'd say and then you start to filter through that schedule
By the time people hear this, they may have already announced the schedule because this comes out on Wednesdays. They announce it on Thursday, right? That's the full schedule release? Yep, yep. Full schedule release. So it'll be released Thursday night, and the regular season will start again on a Wednesday. Game one, the Seahawks will play. They won the Super Bowl. It says an unnamed opponent.
Any guess? Hmm. Like it's probably not going to be the Patriots again, is it? Very well. They've done that before. They have, and that would be a huge draw for... Yeah, mostly because of Grable. Do you want to hear their home opponents for this year? Seattle? Yeah. So they play the Patriots, Bears, Chargers, Chiefs, Giants, Cowboys, Niners, Rams, and Cardinals.
So it's going to be one of those teams? Yeah. Because they've already announced who they're playing away and home. It's probably the Patriots. Because the Rams play the 49ers on Thursday. Yeah, it's probably the Patriots then. We could be wrong. The season is starting midweek to accommodate the first regular season game in Australia. The Rams will play the 49ers.
Dude, I can't believe they're going to Australia to play this first game. That's insane. That's so far. That's like a 14-hour flight, isn't it? It's brutal. I've done it. It's brutal. It's that in Japan are the worst flights I've ever been on because they're so long. Yeah. To do something physical right after, because, I mean, you're not getting off the plane and playing, but even two days.

And their California team's going to Australia because it is a little shorter because that's the way you get there. You don't go East Coast to Australia. Yeah, it'd have to be West Coast. They brought in 17 free agents, did well in the draft, brought in Carnell Tate, another wide receiver that's going to be a guy that demands coverage that will open up space for everybody else, get the run game going a little bit. Robert Sala will get that defense going. I think they're going to be super competitive. I don't, but...
If they just show that they're going to be competitive the next year, that's good. Give me a little promise. You've got to build. Anytime a new head coach comes in, you're resetting a culture and starting over, and everybody's got to understand the new standard that's being set. It takes some time.
But once you set that foundation, now you're building towards something, and that's what you want to see. You want to see this organization building towards something in the near future. I have not seen it.
My wife and I were talking the other night. She said, hey, let's watch Devil Wears Prada 2. And she goes, well, we'll have to wait until it comes out to streaming because we have an eight-week-old, so we're not going to the theater. You're not going to the theater, no. Like, it's got a different vibe to it. You Spencer Pratt for Mayor type guy? Huh? Wait a minute. Say that again? Are you keeping up with the L.A. mayoral race? No, not at all. Okay. You haven't seen anything? No.
Spencer? No. Interesting. Do you know who Spencer Pratt is? Yes, he's the actor, right? No. You're thinking of Chris Pratt. Yep, there you go. This is what I love about you, and I'm serious, and I do. Look, I'm not in the politic world of L.A. right now. No, no, it's not politics. What is it? You just said he's running for mayor? He is. Okay. But he's from Kristen Cavallari, Laguna Beach.
Oh, I heard about this guy. Yeah. Yeah. And he started it was all about the fires and all that stuff. And he went crazy because their house burnt down or something. I just wondered if you were like keeping up. No, I'm not keeping up with him. But I did hear he's making a big push. I think according to the prediction markets, he might slightly be in the lead now. Wow. Pretty wild.
So how would you run? Because you said that you had interests in politics. It's so crazy. I talked about this this morning on the show. There's been a couple of stories that I was running coming. I'm not running for anything. And I'll say it's only the second time I've said this. And... Where would you run? In what city would you run?
I'd run in... So the true... This is a football show, but what the heck's going on? Yeah, I mean, what's going on? It's OTAs. So... five years ago, six years ago at this point, I grew up in Arkansas.
I've always thought, hey, I should go back and find a way that from the inside I can help because I do try to help a lot from the outside, especially with things like food insecurity because that meant a lot to me when people would help us eat. Got it. So that and education because if you don't have an education, you don't have a shot in life. No chance. If you come from a poor area. None.
That's the only way to get out of poverty. So that is very much my priority. I was recruited about five or six years ago. My years are going to be a little off to run for governor of Arkansas. Wow. And so they knew Sarah Sanders, who's a governor now, was going to run.
And they were like, we need someone to run against her who is someone that has a name that people will know and someone that has a story. Now, for me, I've never been in politics, but Got a great story. I came up hard and I'm extremely educated in how not just politics work, but state legislature. Like I studied that for the I may run one day.

They're going head over top. And they're there picking them up at the bottom. People break their legs. Collar bones are broken. That's the kid that got the cheese. I mean, and so it's just bragging rights for the year? Yeah. Or is it a money prize? No, there's not really a money prize. It's tradition. Yeah, it's tradition, and you're the cheese guy of the year. Wow. Yeah.
Oh, man, Dan, we don't have YouTube premium up here, do we? No, we don't. Here we go. Here we go. This is Cooper's Hill. They throw the cheese down. Everybody takes off. The front guy wipes hard. They're up. Oh, man. Bear Grylls needs to do this on his next episode. Oh, my God. I would break a collarbone for sure. And it's like muddy enough to be slick.
I mean, every one of those guys after their first step are just going down. That guy looks happy back there. He knows he's not getting the cheese. Look at this guy. He goes... Give me the cheese. What is your coolest athletic achievement that has nothing to do with football or baseball or, like, organized sport? that you competed in? Because for example, I've done a couple Olympic triathlons. Good for me. I would never run. I hate running. I hate running. I've climbed some cool stuff. There's not one that's on the top of my head. Like kind of stayed mainstream.
Maybe being an athlete though, you never wanted to risk it because that's your, well, that was part of it too. Like part of your contract is if you get hurt off the field, then you got to pay back your signing bonus or it works against your salary. And I was like, I'm never taking that risk. Like I never skied or snowboarded when I played or did anything extreme just because what am I going to do?
Just go out there. Do you ever ride motorcycles? No, no. I rode dirt bikes one time with a buddy of mine that was like, he was in motocross and all that. And he came out and he's like, here, dude, hit this one. I had no idea what I was doing. I couldn't even change the gear. It was brutal. Do you ever skydive? I was asked to skydive multiple times and that scares the hell out of me. No. Have you?
Yeah. Was it exhilarating? No, it's terrible. I didn't want to do it to begin with. Terrifying? It's terrible. Did you do it as a tandem jump? Yeah. I woke up one morning, I had a nightmare about skydiving. I hate heights. I was living in Austin. Oh, well, that's definitely the activity you should do then. Hate it. Scared to death. And I thought, I don't want to be scared of this.
