What sparked the controversy over Sydney Sweeney’s Novig ad?

Brett Cooper 0:00
Happy Tuesday, everyone. I hope you had a fantastic weekend. I'm so excited to announce that we are back with yet another Sydney Sweeney episode because now the women of the sporting world are involved and they, my friends, they are outraged. They are betrayed. They are hurt. They are horrified by the absolutely disgusting, problematic ad that they saw on their timelines last week. They are hurt. that this is how women in sports are being portrayed. Now, I personally, even though I do take issue with a lot of Sydney Sweeney's actions in the Novig ad and her involvement in the company, I personally think that these women are being idiotic. However, the good thing is, we always have to find the good thing, is that after watching all of this discourse unfold online, I really do think that Sydney Sweeney might inadvertently be the one to convince millions of women that sexual liberation wasn't actually a great thing for them.

Or... Or, of course, they might just be too dense to get it, because this is really giving a confused lesbian to me. Now, before we dive into this story, I wanna thank you guys so much for being here. As a reminder, I am going on tour this fall. Click the link in the description below to see every city that I'm coming to and buy tickets. If I am coming to a city near you, I would love to see you in the audience. It'll be so much fun. All right, guys, now, it is not news. that people love to hate Sydney Sweeney. That's why she is leaning into all of these controversial advertisements. She obviously loves the heat, she loves the controversy, and the least shocking group that hates her is other women. And the difference with Sydney Sweeney and other women is that if Lizzo, for example, or maybe Sabrina Carpenter did that same ad that she did for Novig, where she was butt naked, holding balls and hockey pucks and lacrosse things over her nether regions, women online would probably be

cheering about women's liberation and body positivity, all of the things. But because it was Sydney Sweeney, of all people, Sydney Sweeney, somehow now women online, specifically female athletes, have now been set back. Just read this tweet. This person said, for every act of micro feminism I do, Sydney Sweeney sets feminism 100 years back and then puts a really dramatic crying gif. And don't worry, we're going to get to how this argument about Sydney Sweeney and feminism is just idiotic and not consistent whatsoever. I actually think she is the embodiment of progressive feminism, but again, we'll get to that later. First, we need to talk about how the female athletes responded. So over the weekend, women in sport across the globe found a way to make this Sydney Sweeney Novick ad about themselves by starting a, hey Sydney, this is what women in sport actually looks like trend.

If you're confused by that, don't worry. Let's roll the montage. Here we go.

It sucks we can't have that song playing because it is such a bop.

All right, now before I dive into my broader thoughts on this, I do just want to point out that the last woman in that last TikTok, she captioned the video, absolutely effing disgusted by Sydney Sweeney in this ad. That one's just particularly funny because that woman went on Love Island, the most raunchy, disgusting, overtly sexual, I mean, absolutely horrific, degrading show that has ever been made. And now she is sitting on TikTok posting about what another woman is doing with her bare body. So it's okay if you go on reality TV to find love, find love and be totally naked. But if another woman does it, oh, then, then it's problematic. I'm sorry. Get off your freaking high horse. I know you jump for a living, but come back down to earth because that is completely hypocritical.

Now I want to acknowledge that I am absolutely in favor of female athletes. I would not advocate against men playing in women's sports if I didn't care about female athletes. I was an athlete growing up. I hope that my future daughters play sports. I have no issue with what these incredible women are doing in their personal and professional lives, but they are completely missing the point.
