What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
And so I'm 15, but I've got a new set of friends who are quite spicy. And what time you're home? Midnight, okay. Party gear on. And we'd absolutely smash the drinks for an hour and then rush home. And there was one night I came back and I could see my dad's car in front of the house. And I'm like, oh, oh, this is horrendous. What am I gonna say? What am I gonna do? This is my life is over. I was obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Weren't we all, darling?
But to the point where I was planning to go to America, try and figure out where he lived and just hang out outside his house and just hope that one day he saw me or fell in love with me. I had this plan.
A kid doesn't understand. Like that was a lot of money that you just wasted.
They do understand how many teeth it would cost because they get money from the tooth fairy. And so we say, Well, you know you've got two pounds for that tooth and this ice cream is four pounds. So that ice cream would cost you two teeth.
That's so good. And in a way it does, 'cause it rots your teeth. Hello and welcome to another episode of the British English Podcast, where I aim to give you culture-led conversations that expose you to advanced British English phrases along the way. And that is exactly what we have in store for you because I have a guest with me today who you may already know. She runs the YouTube channel and podcast called English Like a Native. And we'll be doing a this is your life type episode whereby I ask her about her first childhood memories, first bit of telly she watched, first person she fancied at school, uh, first bit of freedom, first album she bought, and her first proper job she had. All of those kind of questions tap into amazing anecdotes that reveal our culture.
whilst using native expressions. So without further ado, let's welcome our guest onto the show, if you will, Anna from English Like a Native. Hello Anna.
Hi, hi, nice to be here.
It's like um uh Alan Carr chassy man or Graham Norton or Jonathan Ross where you're walking in and we're we're all applauding you. Takes a seat. Hello Anna, how
are you? Good, I'm lapping it up. I'm lapping up the applause.
Now, before you get comfy, what would you like me to get you for a nice drink?
It's morning and I cannot start the day without a coffee. So a nice cappuccino with chocolate sprinkled on the top would be lovely.
Very nice cappuccino with chocolate sprinkled on the top. You're not a flat white kind of person yet?
Uh do you know, I I honestly don't really know the difference. You know, it's just like coffee with milk, but I do like the frothy stuff. I mean, do you get that with a flat white? I don't think. Flat
white is is less froth. It's definitely more like smooth, velvety, thinner feeling. So you if you like your frothy
frothy coffee, that's a bit of a tongue twister, isn't it? Frothy coffee.
Cappuccino might be your your one. Um if you were, you know, on a Jonathan Ross show, it's evening normally. Um is there a different different type of would you go for an alcoholic beverage? Anything like that?
I I'm actually teetotal these days. Are you? Actually, I am. Yeah. Um, so what I tend to go for when I'm out is just a tonic because I realize that what I loved about gin and tonic was actually the tonic. And so taking the gin away just means you can still enjoy your drink. Nobody knows that you're not drinking an alcoholic drink. And uh it's much cheaper. And you're still getting all the taste and the the benefits.
What is the premise of the "This is Your Life" episode with Anna?
Yeah, that's true. So there's a bit of culture already. Why do we feel like we need to justify that the nobody knows kind of thing?
It's a funny thing, isn't it? I I think s like socially in the UK, alcohol is a big part of our social culture. I maybe because we're such um stiff upper lip kind of people that we struggle to relax and let go. And then once we've had a drink, it allows us allows us to lose our inhibitions and we start to have a bit more fun and open up. Um and so alcohol is very much much a part of our culture and pub culture of course. Um so when you say you're not having a drink, it's almost like, Why?
