What is the premise of the Bye Round 99 NRL greatest‑players countdown?
Hello and welcome everybody to episode three of the Buy Round 99, all thanks to Macca's and their 99 cent delivery free, which is only available on the MyMaccas app. Stelo, we went through your Stelo burger. What was it
again? What was it? Hamburger?
Basically just a bun and a piece of beef. Yeah. No sauce? It's short
and simple, a bit like myself. And... I don't need all of the extras. Yep.
They're not extras. They're just staples. No one's adding to that. It's just you've stripped it right back to the bare necessity. I said yes to coming on this
podcast, not expecting to get abused for my culinary – Pursuits and delights. And the way that you nailed that is a really good start. I like that. Can you finish it off now? So why are we here again for 99%?
The 99 best players in the NRL era, including the current players. We are episode three, so it is players 50 to 26. We've had a bit of feedback on the goal kicking. I think I've got to the root cause. Wow. I've got to the root cause. So my daughter recently started playing tackle football.
Just before we get into this, do you want to explain to people who haven't listened to the
first part of it? It's a good idea.
You basically said that there's no reason to have goal kickers in the competition, that they should never miss, and basically they're redundant. And if we are assessing players like a Hasamel Masri, it's ridiculous to even have him on the list because he's a goal kicker.
I don't think that should be added to part of his –
All right, well, let's not bog down here.
That's kind of a wide summation. I reckon if you take the width of the field, right, and look at where the try line is, I reckon if you score a try in 80% of the width of the field, you shouldn't miss a goal. If you're a professional goal kicker. Let's just
get rid of it. It's a
bit like,
and let's go to a couple of sports that, you know, you are sort of... very understanding of coming from where you do. Basically now along those lines, if you're a darts player, you should never miss 180 each time you
go up and
throw three darts. And if I'm on the snooker table, I practice that much and I'm that good and it's a fairly confined space, a snooker table. 147 every time I stand up to start
a break. You are onto something there. That's right. You are onto something, really. No sport left, Jimmy. Nine dark finishes should just be the norm. So I think what's rattled my cage is, like I say, my daughter is playing tackle football, right? They're 20-minute halves, and these kids score a try, and then the clock doesn't stop. They waste like two minutes kicking the goal. I'm like, let's get on with the football. They're not learning anything. So
you
say the kids
football now, we should have time off. No,
scrap goal kicking in kids football. I think that's what the point I was trying to make, is scrap goal kicking in kids football. If you want to practice it, do it at training. Stop wasting everybody's time. We're there to develop the skills of these young girls and young boys. Get rid of goal kicking. Practice it at training.
I'm not arguing with you, Jimmy. I don't agree with you. I'm not arguing with you. And I've said that a lot when we've been in company together. Just a quick recap on those first 50 players that we named. I think basically we came to the realisation if we've got anybody in our top 100... they've had great careers. Like we're talking close to 4,000 players.
Why do Jimmy and Peter argue that goal‑kicking should be removed from junior football?
If you're top 100, and I don't even know, you know, the order is that important, but if they're in our top 100, they've had great careers. I think it was fairly obvious that I put more emphasis maybe on longevity
and the
length of careers and maybe representative football to some degree as well. We're going to miss players, absolutely, no doubt, because already – We've come up with some names that, gee, but you can't get everybody
in. No, you can't.
And it does come down to personal choice to a degree as well. So does that kind of pretty much... put together how we've done the first half and what the second half will look like.
Outstanding job.
