Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

5.077 - 15.677 Andrew Cotter

It's time now for the Chipping Forecast in association with Peter Millar. Brought to you by Andrew Cotter, Eddie Pepperell and special guest Ian Carter.

0

26.525 - 38.021 Unknown

Hello there, welcome to the Chipping Forecast. Once again, it is hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. But what an entertaining few days to talk about on the course and off it.

0

Chapter 2: What interesting experiences did Eddie share about his recent golf tournament in Belgium?

38.061 - 45.892 Unknown

And we're here to just chat a bit at all, back and forth. Eddie Pepperell is back from Belgium, the new content king. How are you, Eddie?

0

46.633 - 66.459 Eddie Pepperell

Good morning. I'm not too bad. Thank you, Andrew. Got back late last night? Got back fairly late and had probably a glass too many of champagne. I was given a bottle of champagne in the end by the promoter for my hole-in-one after joking to him that I hadn't received anything as a prize. So I think he felt bad about that. So I had a glass of champagne when I got back.

0

66.519 - 76.011 Eddie Pepperell

I actually had two or three in the end. And then didn't sleep brilliantly because of the heat. So I'm suffering a little bit. But how are you? You look like you've just come straight from the gym dressed like that.

0

76.071 - 102.73 Unknown

It's not good, David. No, we'll bring Ian in. Oh, actually, Ian Carter knows champagne recently. Eddie was like Sen saying to Eddie, I didn't get my bonus. So you ask and you receive. You didn't have to ask. You received an award. You're the award winning regular special guest. I mean, not just you. Not just me, by no means just me. But sorry, my voice is really deep today.

0

103.892 - 126.082 Unknown

I think I picked up a cold on the flight home or something. But yes, so we got the award from the Audio Academy for Sport for our Ryder Cup coverage on BBC Five Live. Yeah, it was really nice, actually. Lovely to, I mean, you spend most of your time not winning awards and saying, well, awards, they're rubbish, aren't they? But then actually when you win one, you think, that's really nice.

126.984 - 151.419 Unknown

And so really thrilled for the team. Did you do the speech? I did do the speech, yeah. Step back, everyone. I just did it very quickly. I just thanked a few people and that was it. You're telling a story about par five. The interviewer didn't seem, this is obviously the interview afterwards, he didn't seem entirely clued up in things. He said, Ryder Cup, that's golf, right?

153.282 - 155.144 Unknown

No, he just said, it's the Ryder Cup, right?

156.406 - 161.713 Eddie Pepperell

Did you get the smash bag out on stage while collecting the award?

161.693 - 164.676 Unknown

See, this is what I'm working on. Everybody, come back.

Chapter 3: How did Eddie's hole-in-one impact his experience at the tournament?

164.956 - 189.658 Unknown

This is what I'm working on. Stop. Bathroom break. The smash bag's in the naughty corner at the moment because I smashed it too hard. And so I've been playing golf with a compression thing on my elbow as a result of the pain that's been inflicted by the smash bag. Yeah, there we are. Thanks, Ollie. Thanks for that. Thanks for your lesson. Thanks for your help. I now have tendonitis in my wrist.

0

189.678 - 210.381 Unknown

Yeah, doing a lot of putting work now. Okay, yeah. Good, okay. You've told us there might be a little bit of coming and going in the background in Carter Towers, as we find. Yes, yeah, there will be. My brother's here already with his wife. His daughters are arriving. We've got a nice late May bank holiday barbecue.

0

210.698 - 230.975 Unknown

today because our son Ollie is going away to Australia for a couple of years, uh, next month. So it's kind of, we're into all these sort of farewell parties. So the whole family's coming today and some friends. And, um, Sarah said, uh, I said, what time's the barbecue starting? She said, about noon. Noon? Yeah. It's about lunch. It's an all-day affair.

0

231.756 - 257.015 Unknown

And then, so when we did the WhatsApp group for this pod, and I said, oh, guys, because Eddie had made the cut, so I thought, right, it's safe now. I always try and, you know, time when I put messages in, especially when Eddie's playing. So on Friday night, I said... Any idea when he wants to do the pod? Earlier the better for me on Monday. Andrew came back and went, it's midday, okay?

0

257.576 - 281.047 Unknown

And me, with having such giant cojones, said, yeah, that's fine. And then that didn't go down well. But fortunately, you've spirited us forward by an hour and a half, so that's good. Yeah, we're recording on bank holiday Monday morning. Andrew, as we've come forward an hour and a half, does that mean the book is finished? I sent it off this morning. Oh, yes.

281.307 - 309.54 Unknown

I know, but it'll come back on Thursday with the final one. So this Sunday coming is the final, final deadline. Right. And then it goes to copy edit. But yeah, I've done a bit. Happy? Yes, Nick. you know some bits of it I'm actually quite happy with now I think wow no I mean that is big no you broke 70 basically is what you're saying No, I don't think I did. No, because I'm a new player on tour.

310.422 - 330.754 Unknown

So I'm just hoping to keep my card by scratching a couple of decent finishes in early season tournaments. Oh, incidentally, we'll come on to that and lots of sort of qualification for the bigger tournaments, etc. Because people are concerned, not concerned, they're interested on your behalf because you are flying. So let's get into... I say flying, that's so strange.

331.435 - 343.216 Unknown

You're sort of... You're like the Wright brothers doing their 12-second flight early on. You're getting some flight, but you're certainly getting flight. The Soudal Open, Belgium. Do you know what Soudal does, Eddie? You must know now.

343.317 - 359.619 Eddie Pepperell

I do, I do, because I played with a guy. I think I played with the CFO... a couple of years ago in the prime there, and he told me all about it. And it stuck with me because they do adhesives and other things. Yes, they're a hardware company, are they not, basically?

Chapter 4: What challenges does Eddie face with his golf game and mental focus?

400.706 - 422.449 Unknown

So, here's a TCF fan account. Jonathan Fletcher. This week, I decided to go to my first ever golf tournament, the Sudan Open, and I wanted to share my experience. Thursday morning was uneventful, apart from almost getting hit by Francesco Laporta's wayward drive on the 16th. In the afternoon, I naturally started following Eddie's group, and it wasn't long until I spotted the Pepperell Army.

0

423.458 - 433.349 Unknown

I kept my distance until Jim, I really hope his name is Jim, spotted my Shrewsbury Town shorts. Clocked House from the UK and therefore supporting Eddie. Is there a Jim, Eddie?

0

433.369 - 436.734 Eddie Pepperell

There was a Jim there this week, actually, yeah.

0

436.754 - 436.854 Unknown

Okay.

0

436.874 - 446.308 Eddie Pepperell

Just a casual member or distant relative? No, an early new member. In fact, I don't think I had met him before, but a nice man by all accounts called him to CTGA, so he got the seal of approval.

446.849 - 464.401 Unknown

Good. Okay, Jim was there. So it wasn't long until I was introduced, says Jonathan, to every other attending member of the Pepperal Army. He's got to start calling it the Pepper Army. That's the whole point of it, the Pepperal Army. The highlight of Thursday was undoubtedly Eddie's hole-in-one at the 15th. I never expected to see a hole-in-one at my first tournament.

464.421 - 480.204 Unknown

The only person to see more surprised was Eddie, looking quite puzzled in the tee box. So yes, quick dive into that one, Eddie, because your reaction was up there on the Insta, the DP World... to her Instagram and ours as well. So, yeah, underwhelmed?

480.825 - 496.582 Eddie Pepperell

Well, not so much. It was a lovely shot. I think maybe that was what shocked me, but I couldn't quite see. The pin was just over a little knoll and there was only a few people up at the green and they didn't make a lot of noise. The crowd went mild. Yeah, post-Brexit is still an issue.

496.602 - 517.493 Eddie Pepperell

So it was a very muted crowd, but once we got there, it became clear after a few seconds that Hole-in-One had occurred and There we are, yeah. It was a fairly nonchalant response. Jamie was excited? Well, I felt a little sorry for the image that the tour captured at that particular moment. I don't think Jamie was overly enamoured with that, actually.

Chapter 5: What new putter is Wyndham Clark using and how has it affected his performance?

946.82 - 968.721 Unknown

if this is the way my mind works I'd say others are really struggling as well you mentioned Renato Paratori we saw Xander Lombard and MJ Duffy astonishing finish yesterday when Richard Sterney won it. And again, we'll come into this in more. But I was just thinking about looking at Renato Paratori, for example. He was 10th going into the final round. You played with him on the Saturday.

0

969.342 - 990.547 Unknown

So he's 178th in the rankings. So I think he's in because he had three wins in the Hotel Planner Tour. So here he is getting a chance, right? Okay, I'm going to take advantage of this. 10th going into the final round. I mean, then had a bit of a shocker. He was, he tumbled down the board. He actually birdied two of the last four, but still two over for the day back to 30th.

0

991.609 - 1009.193 Unknown

Beef was something similar, you know, and Beef Johnson, I think he's playing, is he still playing in a medical? Yes. But, you know, gets chances to play. He came in 156th in the race to Dubai. He was really floundering a two over for his final round. Saved it, really saved it with Eagle Birdie on 16th, 17th.

0

1009.173 - 1025.325 Unknown

and then you see what happens to MJ Duffy and to Xander Lombard so that pressure is there for everybody it's amazing how it affects tour players in the same way although at a very different level to the way it would affect us Absolutely and

0

1025.305 - 1044.867 Eddie Pepperell

Again, I've tried never to dive too much into the specifics of a week or even two when it comes to performing well or even poorly on a Sunday. Over the course of a career, things tend to iron out again if you're doing enough of the right things. I think back to me last year, I had a couple of poor Sundays, Mauritius and the Nexo Championship.

1044.847 - 1063.85 Eddie Pepperell

And had they been good Sundays, I would have been in a different position this year. This year, I've turned those into good Sundays in the SA Open and China, where I've had two top tens. But I've also backed that up with a number of solid weeks. OK, I'm frustrated finishing 20th every week, but nonetheless, that's points that are being accrued and that will matter at the end of the year.

1063.87 - 1074.583 Eddie Pepperell

So I think in terms of the body of work that's going on this year, it's a lot fuller and better than last year. And I'm making I have made some Sundays count. And ultimately, you do have to do that as tough as it is.

1074.563 - 1100.689 Unknown

And you're also bearing out exactly what you've said throughout the life of this podcast, that everything comes out of good technique and your technique is really good at the moment. So you've got the base now that you could catch light any week, but the tinder is in place and the wood is in place in terms of technique and potential inspiration. It's just the spark and you could really...

1100.669 - 1104.416 Unknown

you know, uh, catch fire at any, any given tournament.

Chapter 6: What insights were shared about the competitive nature of the DP World Tour?

1296.464 - 1313.318 Eddie Pepperell

There's a flow to that move, which I see in me when I play my best golf. And so that tells me that, OK, things might not be perfect technically in some areas, but... There's some good stuff going on there. And, you know, there's some high-quality mid-irons in particular. In fact, all four of my hole-in-ones, three have come with a six-iron and one with a five-iron.

0

1313.339 - 1318.815 Eddie Pepperell

So, you know, it kind of points to my strength, my mid-irons and my strength, and they're back kind of heading in the right direction.

0

1319.032 - 1330.45 Unknown

Eddie, do you put this down to that sort of, it's about a six iron length wedge that's got the grip finder on it. Is that the key here?

0

1330.47 - 1331.411 Eddie Pepperell

I think it's a cornerstone.

0

1331.431 - 1332.273 Unknown

That you use in practice?

1332.513 - 1353.523 Eddie Pepperell

Yeah, it's a cornerstone because, again, it's resetting my grip every day, keeping it simple. I had a great warm-up on Sunday. I had an extra long warm-up. probably spent 50 minutes just hitting maybe a hundred shots with that club with a stick between my belt and the attempt to keep my arms, to get my arms moving in the takeaway before my hips, which is my bad move sequentially.

1354.044 - 1369.585 Eddie Pepperell

And I went out and played a lot better yesterday and I absolutely flushed it on the range. So there was a great, that's what I touched on a little while ago in the pod, this linear relationship between doing this, creating that on the golf course and seeing that therefore improving the scoring. So there's, there's some definitely good stuff happening.

1369.745 - 1369.845

Yeah.

1369.825 - 1372.949 Unknown

You're still playing without a coach, aren't you? You're figuring things out yourself.

Chapter 7: How does Eddie plan to qualify for upcoming tournaments?

1747.533 - 1751.62 Eddie Pepperell

Very simple action, compact, quite a small guy. Very good player.

0

1751.64 - 1772.454 Unknown

He was in the mighty Wollstoneholm group in the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines when I was caddying. It was him and Hunter Mahan, partners. And he was the one telling Gary Wollstoneholm, because he's about half the height of Gary Wollstoneholm, but hits it twice as far. And he was saying, why don't you just hit the ball, man? And another South African winner. Yeah, what's the theory behind this?

0

1772.894 - 1789.273 Eddie Pepperell

Well, I don't know. I mean, they tend to win their early events in Africa, but they're just such good golfers. They're so capable of shooting low scores. They're aggressive players. That's the thing I like most about South African golfers. They're very aggressive, know how to win, and not afraid of the moment. So, yeah, lots to admire.

0

1789.253 - 1815.565 Unknown

Is there anything in the current climate of DP World Tour Golf, which is so much about those 10 spots for, let's call it, promotion to the PGA Tour, is that inspiring the South Africans? Is that creating more opportunities for the South Africans? Is there anything in that? I'm trying to come up with some kind of reason in my own head, and all I've got is questions, to be honest.

0

1815.764 - 1831.114 Eddie Pepperell

Yeah, I don't know. I wouldn't have thought Richard Sterney would be thinking too much about playing golf in America. Possibly Casey Jarvis and Jaden Shaper for sure. But I think the pathways from the Sunshine Tour to the DP World Tour are the ones that are probably to be most looked at closely. You know, they're obviously a very strong pathway there.

1831.134 - 1838.548 Eddie Pepperell

South African golf is a massive component of the DP World Tour. And some European players maybe don't love how...

1839.187 - 1856.402 Eddie Pepperell

wide open that kind of pathway is but of course for the for the South Africans it's fantastic and the key people in the game like Johan Rupert are instrumental in creating those opportunities so um you know it's well it's great to see as I say they're great players to watch but uh I think we've spoken enough maybe we should uh as the sun is shining Andrew talk about this

1861.732 - 1871.35 Unknown

There has never been a better time to buy shorts. Here I am sitting in shorts and a vest. I don't think Peter Millar do vests, but if they did vests, oh, they'd be lovely vests.

1872.713 - 1876.72 Eddie Pepperell

You're like if Royal Family was filmed in an alternate universe.

Chapter 8: What are the implications of player rankings on tournament participation?

2021.433 - 2024.14 Ian Carter

Population 3,581.

0

2024.508 - 2025.69 Unknown

Okay.

0

2025.71 - 2026.652 Ian Carter

That really is Hexville.

0

2027.514 - 2048.052 Unknown

Anyway, what was I going to say? Oh, yeah. So, big celebration for your 300th tournament. Now, I went through every tournament you played in the DP World Tour, European Tour, DP World Tour, last night. Because I'm living the dream. I counted up every one of your tournaments. And I made it that this was your 302nd. Going back to...

0

2048.032 - 2066.242 Unknown

Syntoma, which was a sort of dual sanction one with the Challenge Tour, I think, wasn't it? That was one that used to have, it was a Challenge Tour and a European Tour in 2012. Ah, Syntoma. That was your first. What's that one, Ian? It was always called Ah, Syntoma, wasn't it? Was it? A-H and then Syntoma. Oh, right.

2066.262 - 2070.529 Ian Carter

The Ah, Syntoma. And I always used to think, Ah, Syntoma.

2070.509 - 2098.575 Unknown

are you just using your gravelly voice here like whispering bob harris it's weird isn't it the voice it is i would definitely use that today sidle up to people at the barbecue say all good here good good to see you ladies vegetable kebab yeah vegetable kebab is not the opener maybe i've made 20 of them this morning 20 vegetable kebabs there's the title for this week's pod anyway so um so are you happy that it was your 300th

2098.825 - 2110.582 Eddie Pepperell

I haven't thought about it because, too much, other than it's interesting, you make it 302. My cousin went through it a number of times and he couldn't get above 290. So that makes me feel slightly better that you've gone above 300. Okay.

2112.164 - 2119.896 Unknown

I mean, there's a distinct possibility that both of us are wrong and the actual European tour are right with this. But did they give you a cake or something?
