Chapter 1: What happened at Hilton Head with Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler?

5.077 - 15.677 Andrew Cotter

It's time now for the Chipping Forecast in association with Peter Millar. Brought to you by Andrew Cotter, Eddie Pepperell and special guest Ian Carter.

26.491 - 49.555 Unknown

Hello everyone, welcome to the Chipping Forecast once again where we are reunited in good old blighty Albion, United Kingdom. Eddie's not in China though. A few people were asking, is Eddie on his way to China? No, he's not. He and Benjamin Follett-Smith are sipping Constellation wine together for just missing out. Or maybe a celebration wine, I don't know Eddie.

49.635 - 55.401 Unknown

But you came close to getting in and you said you were going to give it till Saturday and then make the decision?

0

55.381 - 65.611 Ian Carter

Yeah, I actually gave it until this morning in the end because there was a midday flight I could have gotten today which would have got me there Tuesday morning, which I think push come to shove I may have done.

0

66.252 - 77.283 Ian Carter

But no, it's still second reserve, so I withdrew a couple of hours ago and I shall spend the week in the UK, which actually looking at the weather forecast and with things planned, which I know we will touch on, I'm quite looking forward to.

77.784 - 82.429 Eddie Pepperell

Does this suggest that your training regime has been going really well, so you're very keen to get out there?

82.809 - 96.379 Ian Carter

That's Ian Carter, our regular special guest. You're not wrong. I played a couple of times last week and I played quite well. So I'm I was pretty I was surprised. I was hopeful, pleased, encouraged, encouraged.

96.439 - 108.777 Ian Carter

And I thought, you know, I would rather show up in China if I was to be slightly rusty than Turkey, because I kind of like to hit the ground running really once the European season starts, but not to me. So there we go.

108.875 - 128.807 Unknown

But this is, again, we have mentioned this ad nauseum, pod nauseum, that about 10 of the Kew School graduates get into the Volvo China Open. There are 50 places or so that are given to national spots and amateur invitations. So, again, this is...

Chapter 2: What is the current status of LIV Golf and its future?

729.055 - 734.123 Ian Carter

So the dog had eaten the body to survive. No, no, no. She'd been rescued, and then they come back two days later, and the dog was found.

0

734.143 - 744.418 Unknown

I love that. Good. On to live golf. No, just quickly. Have either of you guys done... Jury service. Ian must have done jury service.

0

744.438 - 749.966 Eddie Pepperell

No, I haven't, no. I used to be a Crown Court reporter, but no, I've never done jury service.

0

750.447 - 765.349 Unknown

Because I've done it, and I've been asked again to do it. Because it's random, it's a total random thing. But it's a strange thing because... Sorry, there is a golf chat coming. It's a very strange thing because if you are employed by somebody...

0

765.43 - 792.685 Unknown

then your employer just pays you, has to pay you your ongoing salary as you take however many weeks away it might be to sit there and go, hmm, not sure about this one. Whereas if you're self-employed, they give you £63 a day expenses and you might be missing significant work, which would be the case for me. So you try and defer it or you try and say, I can't do that, or you lead in insanity.

793.706 - 817.122 Unknown

But... it's very difficult to get out of and you know there's a fine if you don't do it so it's I've tried to defer it and I'll see what they do but also I mean it would be better if we had the system in America I think of jury selection because then the defence barrister would just ask me a few questions and say this guy doesn't like people very much so I think

817.102 - 838.005 Unknown

But they're trying to do away with juries. The government at the moment, led by David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, they're trying to do away with jury trials for anything except for very serious cases. So anything that would involve sentences under three years, there wouldn't be juries. But you don't know what you're going to get. You could get one that lands you in court for 12 months.

839.247 - 840.609 Unknown

So it's a very strange thing.

840.789 - 851.244 Eddie Pepperell

I mean, I've always wondered that. When you get these cases that go on for years, how do you arrive at a jury that can possibly do that?

Chapter 3: How is driving distance impacting professional golfers today?

1187.833 - 1207.288 Ian Carter

He's been to football matches. So though there's a lot of profanity at football matches, there are some quite entertaining moments and clever chants that do get sung, whereas in America they just seemingly don't exist. But I thought Fitzy looked so comfortable all week, and it got me thinking, where does he sit on the list of all-time greats of English golfers?

0

1208.028 - 1226.716 Ian Carter

I think you could, to me, I would put him fourth as I've gone through the list of names in the modern game. And I'm probably going back 40 to 50 years there behind Faldo, Rose and only slightly behind Westwood. But I honestly think he's ahead of every other English golfer now. Well, again, you see, I'm not going that far back.

1227.94 - 1245.302 Ian Carter

So in the last six months, you're saying he's called Tommy. No, I think I said 40 years. I mean, where was Jack? That's a good question. Look, if you compare him, I mean, it's probably fairer to compare him among his contemporaries like Tommy and Tyrell. And you'd have to say he's had a better career than both Tommy and Tyrell. You know, he's a major winner.

0

1245.322 - 1266.028 Ian Carter

He's won more times on the PGA Tour than both. He's played Ryder Cups. But you compare his... you know, the way he seemed at certainly Tommy and, uh, he goes under the radar and Jen kind of commented on that last, last night watching him. He, he has had an already brilliant career and I think come, come the end of it, he's, um, he's going to be right up there alongside Justin Rose. Henry Carton.

1267.83 - 1273.337 Eddie Pepperell

Yeah. Um, I'm, I'm really wrestling with the, has he overtaken Westwood already?

1273.452 - 1295.207 Ian Carter

Well, I don't think so. But I think that's because I would give more credence to Westwood's career in Europe and the Ryder Cup. And not to mention, I do think Westwood, although he hasn't won a major, he came close in many, whereas Fitzy's major record, despite winning one. But look, I think you could make the argument. I mean, he's an incredibly successful golfer and he's so good at winning.

1295.187 - 1317.145 Eddie Pepperell

and uh and his putting is brilliant and oh he's i enjoy watching him i think he's right right in top form at the moment i thought his body language was amazing um throughout that final round in fact throughout all four days i mean he loves hilton head it's where he went as a as a kid and it was the tournament he wanted to win until he learned actually that majors are bigger and

1317.125 - 1339.217 Eddie Pepperell

this was the place that he wanted to win. He's won now there twice in, in three years. He's got the, the lighthouse as his, um, uh, head cover. Although, did you hear the commentator make the point that the, the, there's actually a, a green top to the, the real lighthouse and the green top wasn't, is not there on his, uh, lighthouse head cover for his driver.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of driving stats on a golfer's performance?

1388.064 - 1409.012 Eddie Pepperell

I thought it was at the Players' Championship. And I thought it was at the Valspar as well. But to me, just that sort of outside kind of thing, over and above, or not over and above, but outside his actual golf game, which is magnificent, there is a confidence in the way that he goes about everything.

0

1408.992 - 1427.898 Ian Carter

One thing I like the most about Matt, and I think the reason why he's able to be so successful in the US in particular, because the environment is so challenging for a foreign player, he's so into his routines and analysis and his feedback on every single shot. It's almost as though the golf shot gets lost within a two-minute process.

0

1427.979 - 1446.669 Ian Carter

And so therefore, it's much easier just to become immersed in hitting the correct shot. And I think he does that better than almost any player in the game. So that's the one thing that strikes me watching him. And I think that's part of the reason why he's so successful. Did you win a major this year? I could see him winning US Open again, to be honest. I really could. Yeah, I really could.

0

1446.849 - 1461.836 Ian Carter

And yeah, he's such an aggressive putter. We talk about guys like Westwood and Tommy. You know, you watch these guys when they're in the big moments. I always think back to when Matt Fitzpatrick won at the race to Dubai a few years ago. I think it was in 2020. And he was playing with Laurie, in fact, in the final round. Me and Laurie often talk about this.

0

1461.876 - 1477.904 Ian Carter

And he had two putts from about 20 foot to win. And he hit it four foot past. And he held the one coming back. And you think to yourself, who would hit that putt four foot past the hole? But that's what Matt Fitzpatrick does, and he does it time and time again. He did it last night on a couple of occasions, but he always seems to hold the one coming back.

1477.924 - 1483.371 Ian Carter

He is such a confident putter, and that also separates him from most other British players, I would say.

1484.192 - 1495.769 Unknown

Yeah. Do you know who's lost confidence? Poor old Tony Finau. Sponsor's exemption playing was last by five clear shots. There's a talent who's... He looks good, though. He looks good doing it at the moment.

1495.789 - 1500.255 Eddie Pepperell

Well, he does look... Yeah, no, great. But didn't get into the Masters field this year, did he?

1500.235 - 1509.025 Unknown

Yeah, so on the mountain of concern, we're getting up to Camp 3, right up before the final push to the summit on Tony Finau.
