Chapter 1: What is the significance of the PGA Championship preview?

5.077 - 15.677 Andrew Cotter

It's time now for the Chipping Forecast, in association with Peter Millar. Brought to you by Andrew Cotter, Eddie Pepperell, and special guest Ian Carter.

26.71 - 50.232 Unknown

Hello there and welcome to the Chipping Forecast. Chipolata, the only chipolata, one solitary sausage on a plate this week for the USPGA because that's all it deserves. I'm not hyping it up very much or very well, but here we are on the eve of the PGA Championship, USPGA Championship to those outside America. And we have our man on the ground in regular special guest Ian Carter. Ian, hi.

51.175 - 61.51 Unknown

Hi, Andrew. How are you doing? I'm doing well. We have Eddie Pepperell. I sort of press ganged him into joining us because I thought, what else is he doing? What are you doing? Watching daytime TV? What were you doing?

0

62.047 - 77.903 Eddie Pepperell

Um, not a lot, really. I was practising. I was walking the dogs when you text, so I figured, yeah, now I've got the day free, I can join yourself and the badger, although we should let the listeners know that the badger's missed his tea time, and he turned up 15 minutes late to this recording, so... Well, he wouldn't have turned up at all, because we had to phone him, and then he phoned back.

78.424 - 91.7 Unknown

So we set the recording for at 3.30 UK time on Wednesday afternoon, and at 3... I'd sent him a couple of messages, phoned him. He obviously saw there was a missed call, 3.44 or something like that. He... Calls back saying, yep, how can I help you?

93.244 - 106.718 Ian Carter

Well, you could join the Zoom meeting because we've been sitting here for a while. Sometimes it's hard working with a time difference and I apologize. Yeah, it's complicated to add five onto stuff. So that turns my double bogey into an eight to start.

106.698 - 125.044 Unknown

So Eddie and I were sitting there going, shall we just start? And then we looked at each other and thought, no, because we don't know anything that's going on, basically. All we're here to do in this preview is you have all the information, Ian. You're going to give us all the chat. We'll hear a bit from Rory McIlroy, but you know everything. And Eddie and I are just going to go, absolutely.

125.024 - 127.288 Unknown

True talk, true talk that.

127.729 - 143.994 Ian Carter

So how's it been? 108th USPGA, PGA Championship. It's an interesting one that, isn't it? Because we berate the Americans for calling it the British Open. But we feel compelled to call this the US PGA Championship.

Chapter 2: What insights does Ian Carter provide about Aronimink?

422.827 - 435.612 Eddie Pepperell

Well, and Ian's wrists are maybe stronger, but certainly larger than yours, Andrew. So, yeah, I mean, Ian's just obviously a very weak older man, so it's one of those things that...

This is a standing preview of the second major of the men's major season.

0

441.484 - 457.296 Ian Carter

You had the main pod with Chris Wood, and if anyone hasn't heard that and are listening to this, honestly, that saved my bus journeys yesterday. I really enjoyed listening to that. If you ever want an insight into the stresses and strains of professional golf, which I know Eddie gives us,

0

457.276 - 487.182 Unknown

pretty much every week but it went to a whole new level and you know that was an extra special guest he's a nice guy as well isn't he he won't be listening to this so we can say this he's a lovely guy he's obviously you know got normal human sensitivities thoughtful intelligent nice guy just happens to be brilliant at golf as well but he could uh eddie and i were talking about this while we were waiting for you to work out time differences that he'd make a good commentator wouldn't he once he's he would he did some work with us at the rider cup in rome

0

487.162 - 505.795 Ian Carter

and was superb on it and we've tried on numerous occasions subsequently to get him to do some more with us because he's brilliant he sounds a little bit like one of the Wurzels but he's very good it's just a West Cunstry accent you're just being very stereotypical there

505.775 - 527.445 Unknown

He sounds like one of those Scottish, one of the Wurzels, as we've discussed before, who looked like Bernhard Langer. The King of Prussia Inn. George Washington visited the King of Prussia Inn. So it's a national historic landmark. That's why that little town is called the King of Prussia. It's named after the inn at the heart of it. So that's good. Right, so what about...

527.425 - 537.58 Unknown

What about Aronamink then as a course? Because I've heard that a lot of players, caddies, blah, blah, blah, coaches are all saying it's going to be low, low, low scoring. What's the vibe, Badge?

540.344 - 559.051 Ian Carter

I'm not sure how low the scoring will be because it is fast and firm. We're expecting some rain overnight. It's really blustery today. And if that continues, then the scoring won't be low. The greens are huge, but they're intersegments, and the targets are very, very small. It's undulating.

560.432 - 583.063 Ian Carter

It's got kind of Oak Monty vibes to it, just sort of looking at it the way that the trees have been cleared out under the renovation by Gil Hans. I think for the biggest hitters, they're able to fly the bunkers. There are hundreds of bunkers on the golf course. But they can clear the bunkers and then the fairways become very wide there.
