So look, the reason we have a TV pool is that in the late 70s, early 80s, it literally became... Even with the three network era and then the introduction of CNN, really sort of this fourth camera, you throw in a PBS every now and then. And nobody wanted five camera crews in the Oval Office talking with the president and all this stuff. So it was really during as the television era kicked in, the networks, the bureau chiefs of what were the four bureau chiefs at the time, now five. Sort of the five, you know, everybody. Five families, right? I know. Everybody loves their mob talk. The five families in this case, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, and CNN. Yep. And they have been the pool basically since Fox showed up in the late 90s.
And you've basically had this arrangement for the last 30 years. And what it is is that literally every day a different network is in charge with doing – With covering the president whenever he wants to talk to the press. So each day, one network is the representative. So you're not there when I would be on pool duty. And a lot of times, networks don't want their correspondents on pool duty because you cannot be from the network anymore. If you're in- You kind of work for
all the networks
when you do it. Right. You work for the entire entity. And oh, by the way, who pays for this? The five networks do. The government doesn't subsidize this. There's nothing. So- Long story short, why is the TV pool refusing to cover Trump? Because they just CNN pays one fifth of this of this. And if they're not there, guess who doesn't want to cover anybody else's. Right. All right. I mean, you know, not to say that there I'd like to think they're doing it for high brow reasons, too. But there's also a financial consideration there. uh as well it just you pay you know you split the travel costs you split all you split all of that and it's you know they char air force one you get charged first class airfare um for all of for everybody that gets gets a seat you got to reimburse the government first class airfare so um
That's that may be the technical reason, but there should hopefully be. Yeah, I think it's a combination. It's what happened. It's why those of us stood up when Obama's administration tried to keep Fox out of a of a pool situation, which a lot of people are bringing back up because it was people like myself that screamed the loudest. And and the bureau chiefs, you know, basically stood their ground. The Obama White House relented and everybody, all five members of the pool, including Fox, got access to these Treasury officials. And then, you know, so like I said, I'm not going to hold my breath. I'd like I'm what I've noticed with Fox over the years is they will do the minimum to stick by the partnerships in the Trump era.
