Have you ever wondered how Jesse Cole took the Savannah bananas from this? We
had a six million dollar failure last year. We're gonna have bigger ones as we go. To this, we've got shareholders, investors I've reached out to us regularly, and the answer is always no. Or why L Duncan would say this about a Netflix sports broadcast.
Sometimes we're gonna take really big swings and we're gonna freaking whiff.
Then the deal is the show for you. It's a Bloomberg podcast hosted by me, Alex Rodriguez. And me, Jason Kelly.
We talk to the biggest names in the world of sports and business, including NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady, on one of his biggest blunders. I think I've created some magical.
Mm-hmm.
Well I struck out. And you'll even get some of my baseball hot takes. I've had owners tell me it doesn't matter, the game has to be fixed, it's broken. If we have to lock out the whole year, we will.
New episodes air every Thursday. Don't miss out.
I'm Emily Chang, and this is the podcast version of the circuit. My show on Bloomberg Originals. There's one building that rises above the rest of the San Francisco skyline. It's home to a software giant whose story begins somewhere more tropical. I heard something. Did you really come up with the idea for Salesforce while you were swimming with dolphins in Hawaii?
I did, I did. I I I do a great dolphin imitation. Did you know that? Can
you Пош ⁇ л понять. How do they respond? The dog? This is Mark Benioff, CEO and founder of Salesforce, the world's number one customer relationship management or CRM software provider. They sell cloud-based business tools for sales, marketing, e-commerce, all that good stuff. It might sound niche, but their clients include the likes of Apple, Boeing, Amazon, and more than 150,000 companies. Benioff has been called a master networker, a force of nature, Mr. Disruptor, and the fresh prince of software. Let's just say subtlety isn't really his thing. At its core, this is a story all about software, a self-taught teenage programmer turned visionary tech billionaire. And believe it or not, it all starts with a customer service job.
In 1986, you could find Benioff answering customer calls at a not-so-little future competitor called Oracle. Under the wing of longtime CEO Larry Ellison, Benioff's knack for sales took him straight to the top. Today, Benioff is all in. On the AI boom with a new product, AI Agents, a digital workforce to autonomously complete tasks. He isn't the only one betting big on agentic AI, but true to form, he's all in. Good to see you. Thanks for having us. Here we are back in the Ohana room.
Welcome back.
Thank you, Ohana.
I'm so happy to have you. I know you know what Hawana means.
Great.
How do you know that?
It means how do you know what
Ohana means?
I'm from Hawaii.
You're Hawaii. Are you all Kama Ina, a native Hawaiian?
I'm a comma I know.
Were you born in Hawaii? I
was born in Hawaii, born and raised.
How did Marc Benioff’s early life in San Francisco shape his vision for Salesforce?
And you love Hawaii, but
I love Hawaii too.
But next time if we do this I want my ties on the big island.
Let's do it.
Deal?
Come over.
I've interviewed you many times from your false cloud days, many, many dream forces. But I wanna go back a bit to young Mark growing up in San Francisco.
Yes, young Mark, right.
So your parents ran department stores, you grew up your first job was cleaning jewelry
Benioffs department stores.
Benioffs department stores. Who was Mark Benioff before Mark Benioff?
Do I even exist? Is this an existential thing? Should I bring in some spiritual guru?
But seriously, tell me about you as a kid.
I was born right there,
yeah,
literally about six blocks away at Mount Zion Hospital, UCSF now. right on Divisadero Street, nineteen sixty four, sixty years ago, and I grew up right there for two years. Then I moved right there for a while and then I went to college right down there.
So this is your hunt.
And this is where I yeah, I feel very comfortable here.
You basically invented the SaaS industry, software as a service, and made it possible for everything from Netflix to Spotify to businesses at Google and Microsoft.
