Chapter 1: How did Jessie Reyez transition from customer service to music?
When you're that young, your frontal lobe is not developed, so you don't make the smartest decisions. So I didn't make a smart decision, and then it was the closest door to my house, so I was like, fuck it, I'm going. Calling out of work and showing up at work, but as a patron? But I was like, how can I get in and out quick? And I was like, I know. Rollerblades.
Rollerblades will get me in and out of there quick. I'm dead ass. I was like 16, so I was like, fuck it, Rollerblades, got some snacks. Went to the quick cashier. Anyways, I got a call later that night, and it was the boss, and she was like, it doesn't really seem like you want to work here. And I was like, you're right.

Chapter 2: What was Jessie's unique writing process like?
Yeah. Like you're like, I just an FYI.
Yeah. The worst case scenario didn't happen, but this is what happened. Yeah.
Well, and when did you feel like you actually like, man, like, I think I'm kind of like doing this. Like, I think I could really do this for real. Like where you feel like you made it.
I remember I used to cross the border all the time because I lived in Florida at one point. I was bartending there and still trying to make shit happen in Toronto. And I had built a bit of a beautiful musical community in Toronto. So it felt like swimming in the deep end for hours in Florida sometimes trying to make headway. So I would go back and forth a lot.
And then the remix project happened and I begged my bar manager to let me back home to audition and shit. So anyways, it was a lot of back and forth. And even when I was at Remix, I was lucky that I was living off tips that I had made while I was bartending and being a bottle service girl. I had so many jobs. I was a personal trainer. I was a receptionist at a gym. I taught Zumba. I was a lot.
Yeah. Love that.
A lot. I love a Zumba.
You know who loves Zumba?
white women white women they love a zumba they love a zumba yeah you know what more power to you queen yeah happy for you uh so i used to always just i'd i'd like alternate between whatever the fuck i told them but often i would just be like a personal trainer sometimes bartender but the more you tell them the more they fucking ask so sometimes i would just leave it there right yeah and then one time i went and the guy was like what do you do and i was like

Chapter 3: How did Jessie overcome challenges in her music career?
Like, what if I wanted to call you? Like, what kind of what's your what number would you give me? And then he had his kid ask me twice. And then I go and then he goes, I said, call me. And then he goes, yeah, like I think on his cell phone there.
i have no clue maybe either way i i know he had a wedding ring on so you know and then he's like how would i go when he sent his son to me and he was like oh like my dad wants to know like how would he get a hold of you like on the cell phone i go cell phone i don't know what those are i live on an island anyways time to go guys let's go learn like i just kept making shit up to try and like deflect them but to send your child to me you're a fucking sicko when you have your wedding ring on
Yeah, girl.
Like I was literally, when I was watching it unfold, I was like, oh yeah, this isn't the job for me either. Unless you guys want to watch Moana get active, like. With these? Yeah, no. I'm going to ruin the fucking party for everyone if one more dad talks to me. I'm going to make this a very memorable children's birthday for everybody involved, including your child.
And I remember the last party I worked, I had just started dating my now fiance. And I had told him that I had a party to do. And I was telling him how men are so fucking weird and creepy. And so he came with me and then was standing next to me, hovering around me like that, like a fucking Roomba.
And I was like, see, he shouldn't have to do that in order for men to like respect, not be fucking weird. Like, hey, time and place. Like, we're not at a fucking strip club. This is a lawn of your like wife's house. Like this is just not the time or place. So that's probably one of the worst jobs I've ever had.
Yeah.
Other than serving. I'm trying to think. I don't have I haven't had I've had a lot of jobs, but there I feel like I've always been kind of whatevs about them. Did you ever work like nine to five corporate?
Yeah, well, I was in sales. When I was at the gym, I worked at different things. I started as a reception, and then I got promoted to sales. How'd you like that? I got fired. Oh, that's another one.

Chapter 4: What was the significance of The Remix Project for Jessie?
well men who say that can never get it's funny because they call women whores and it's like well clearly she's not that good at her job because she won't sleep with you they're like slut okay i'll sleep with everyone but you apparently this one says never seen a woman that looks better with a tattoo tattoos are the most obvious sign of the pursuit of external validation also the bright dyed color hair too the more natural the woman looks the more likely she's the one to eye on for long term to eye on for long term
and that's yeah until he said that i wasn't on board but it was so well written it's profound honestly yeah do you do you have a lot of tattoos do you have any tattoos i have three i have this one cute i got it with my dad it matches like he's got a little smiley face and then i got my parents right here oh i love that and then i got one on my foot that matches with two of my homeboys that's like a little dog that's a long story
I'm sure it is. It's probably a fun story too. Your life is crazy. Yeah, I have, I have, um, obviously I have this like hand arm tattoo, but thank you. And all my tattoos are cultural. So all of them are someone tribal. I have one down my back too. And then I have one on my neck and then one on my side.
but the one on my side is like a tribal like it's a moon but it has someone tribal inside of it and that one's for our mom like we got sibling tattoos me my sister and my brother uh because we're like she always says i love you to the moon and back so we got that and then one of my neck is for my dad like we all got the same ones too my dad's very first tattoo was like a stick and poke in someone that says 100 someone and it's like tiny as and it's on his like left shoulder blade
and it's so funny because he hates that tattoo like he and it's so faded and raised it's awful because he got it when he was like 14 which was a million years ago and so my dad hates that tattoo and then one time when me and my sister were drunk we were talking about tattoos and then we were like what if we got and Jason goes what if we got one that said 75% someone because my dad's 100 and we're 75
and then i was like that's hilarious dude and that was like two years ago and then we did it like we my brother's is huge it's on his shoulder and it's literally in the biggest font i've ever seen in my life and then me and daison have little ones on our neck and i was like that's how you know we're never that serious because we're literally we tattooed a bit on us on ourselves because we thought it was funny it's good it's great i love a silly ass tattoo i think they're fun they're fun yeah
Fuck haters, that's crazy.
You can't get a bad bitch with tattoos, just say that. It'd be a lot faster. Do you get any hate online? I'm sure you do. You're a woman existing and you're talented, so obviously. Yeah. And you're not white. So obviously, yeah, we're working against you, too.
Yeah, I do. But I've learned to I've always had thick skin and I. Me too. It's just and it's such a gift to have it. Right. It makes you it just makes you stronger, but also lets you get better. Like people try to people try to throw jabs and it's like, you don't even know. That's why I felt so seen watching your videos. Like the way you cackle is the way I receive them. I love that.
