Burgess told the inquiry about an ASIO threat assessment paper circulated after a deadly UK synagogue attack in October... The paper noted Jewish holy days were attractive targets for extremists, yet ASIO's summer holiday threat assessment, published in December, did not specifically address terror warnings about Jewish celebrations.

52.725 - 68.091 Elliot Lawry

Burgess conceded he should have noted ASIO's general concerns about terrorism and anti-Semitic conduct. He denied ASIO was under-resourced despite reduced counter-terror funding since 2020 and said rising anti-Semitism had, quote, "...given more permission for violence."

A coronial hearing in Victoria has heard new details about the deaths of two police officers shot dead by Desi Freeman at his Poropanka property last year. The officers attended the rural property around 300 kilometres northwest of Melbourne to execute a search warrant over alleged child sexual abuse offences in August.

The coroner's court was told five officers negotiated at length with Freeman before Detective Leading Senior Constable Neil Thompson was shot in the face and neck climbing through a window... and Senior Constable Vadim Devart Hotart was shot as colleagues fled for cover. Freeman then returned to the scene and wounded a third officer before fleeing and texting his wife to do the same.

He was shot dead by police near the Victoria-New South Wales border on the 30th of March, ending one of Australia's largest manhunts.

And today's good news. The population of platypuses reintroduced to native parklands in Sydney's south has grown to 20 known individuals. It comes three years after scientists from UNSW launched an initiative to reintroduce the species to the Royal National Park, where they had been absent for more than 50 years.

That's the latest from the Daily Oz newsroom. If you're looking for something else, you can catch up on this morning's Deep Dive, where we explain Australia's worst diphtheria outbreak.

211.611 - 234.161 Emma Gillespie

We will be back tomorrow morning with another Deep Dive, but until then, have a great night. YWCA Australia are the ones behind today's episode and they work on gender equality in really hands-on ways.
