Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Today's episode was made possible by our friends over at Nowscrub.
From The Daily Aus, I'm Sam Kozlowski.
I'm Billie Fitzsimons.
It is Wednesday, the 13th of May. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
The opposition has criticised the federal budget handed down by the government on Tuesday night, accusing the Prime Minister of breaking promises and lying to Australians. In the budget, the government changed rules to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount, arguing the current system disproportionately benefits the wealthiest investors.
Opposition leader Angus Taylor said to ABC Radio on Wednesday, We think there's different savings. We think there's much better places to save rather than hitting Australians with higher taxes. The budget papers show that the changes around negative gearing, capital gains and the trust will dampen investment. The opposition will deliver its official response to the budget on Thursday.
If you are confused about any of the things that I just said, we did a full deep dive explainer on the budget that we published this morning. I'm doing the maths in my head because we recorded it very, very late last night, but we published it this morning and it was a cracker. I think everyone should go listen.
This was our seventh budget, I think, together, Billy, and I'd say it is probably the most to digest in this one out of our pretty long careers.
Yeah.

Chapter 2: What are the criticisms of the Federal Budget by the Opposition?
So there'll be a link to that in today's show notes.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increased pressure to step down after his party, the UK Labor Party, saw major losses in elections last week. Four members of his own government have now quit and more than 80 other MPs have asked him to resign.
At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday local time, the Labor leader vowed to continue to fight for his role and was publicly backed by several ministers, including his deputy, David Lammy, who urged colleagues to, quote, step back and take a breath. Starmer has also faced criticism this year over his appointment of former UK ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, who was friends with Jeffrey Epstein.
Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has confirmed he will step down at the end of his contract in 2027. Cleary's leadership of the NRL team has overseen four premierships in the past six years. He said he would remain at the club in an advisory role focused on leadership and culture. Ivan's son, Nathan Cleary, is the co-captain of the team.
Assistant coach Peter Wallace will take over from 2028 in his first senior coaching role.
And today's good news, this is an absolute cracker. An actor who plays a football-obsessed player in Ted Lasso, a dramatized TV series about an English team, has become a professional player in real life. In the show, Cristo Fernandez plays the legendary character Danny Rojas, a relentlessly cheerful Mexican striker whose catchphrase is, "'Football is life.'"
This week, Fernandez signed a professional soccer contract with American second-tier club El Paso Locomotive FC. Fernandez grew up in the youth system at Mexican club Tecos FC before a knee injury at 15 forced him away from the sport and into acting. He earned the deal after a two-month trial and is listed as a forward. And yes, he has proven that football is indeed life.
I see what you did there. I've never watched Ted Lasso, but I love that story.
We'll add it to the list of things that you should have watched by now.
