Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Today's episode was made possible by our friends over at NBN. Ready? And good morning. This is the Daily Oz. This is the Daily Oz. This is the Daily Oz. Oh, now it makes sense.
Good morning and welcome to The Daily Oz. It's Thursday the 25th of June. I'm Zara Seidler. I'm Emma Gillespie. Earlier this week, five nations, including Australia, issued a joint warning about the threat of artificial intelligence. In a rare move, the joint statement said the world's most powerful AI tools are on the very brink of making cyber attacks faster, cheaper and more damaging.
It comes just weeks after the US government shut down a new AI model over national security fears. In today's podcast, we will explain this latest warning as well as what happened in the US with Claude. But first, here's a message from TDA journalist, Belle.
Hey, my name is Belle and I'm a junior journalist at The Daily Oz. I started at TDA while studying politics and international relations at uni. I joined because I wanted to be part of an organisation that makes news and information more accessible for young people.
TDA wants to be the go-to place for young journalists getting into the industry, where we can learn how to navigate an environment that is changing now more than ever. Okay, Zara, let's start with this warning this week.

Chapter 2: What warning did five nations issue regarding AI?
It's not unusual, I guess, that we hear from individual governments about the threats or the harms surrounding AI, but it is pretty rare that this group of countries would come together and put out a statement of this nature. So who issued it and what did it say?
Okay, so we're talking about Five Eyes, which has to be the most ominous term for a grouping of countries ever.
It's very Orwellian, isn't it?
And I think that's the point. Five Eyes, if you're not familiar... is basically an intelligence alliance between the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. And they share, as I said, intelligence information. They have this like global surveillance project. And essentially, they work together to ensure national security for each of these sovereign nations.
Okay, so this is a very real thing, despite it sounding like maybe a James Bond movie.
Exactly. Very real thing. I guess, you know, like any intelligence, it's meant to be behind the scenes. You're not meant to know a heap about what they're doing every single day. So as you said, the fact that they have not only deemed this serious enough to speak publicly but have issued this joint statement, I think shows the severity of what we're dealing with here.
And so earlier this week they published this joint statement that was warning basically about artificial intelligence. It was signed by each of the country's top cyber security agencies. Mm-hmm. And I must say it was a tiny bit hard to understand. Like it was, I felt like they were kind of talking around things a bit. Yeah, a bit clunky.
A bit clunky, but hey, they are much smarter than I am, so I'm not going to critique.
I think it's important to shout that out because this is a complex topic at the best of times anyway. And then when you have all of these very sophisticated, mysterious cybersecurity agencies coming together, it really is a bit of an exercise of reading between the lines.

Chapter 3: How is AI changing the landscape of cyber attacks?
She's had a great flat white. My God, this oat latte is unbelievable. It's out of this world. And Jacob's like, babe, Kenny, I've been telling you Australian coffee is off the charts.
Okay, so that is one half of the tidbit. And the second half of this tidbit is bringing together a previous tidbit, which was that I thought I was really unique for recommending off campus a few weeks ago. I promise it was before all the rage. Alla, who's in the room, actually didn't like Off Campus. If you'd like to direct any hate towards her.
What's wrong with you?
Just a natural cynic. That's okay. But even the deepest cynics can't get over the fact that there are reports that Australian actor Josh Houston is dating his co-star, Mika Abdallah, who famously just called off her engagement. Yes, Mika is going to win for the Aussies. Who is she engaged to? I didn't hear that.
She was engaged to this actor, like a relatively kind of unknown. I think they were both child star adjacent. But the actor that she was engaged to, famously loathed by her fans because they did this podcast where he was just mean. Anyway, you can look it up.
He was mean, yeah. If you type in Mika Abdallah, fiance mean, you will find what we're looking for, what we're talking about.
Now she's dating? Allegedly. Allegedly. A beautiful Australian man, Josh Houston of Heartbreak High fame. I'm so happy for Mika because she's the star of the next season of Off Campus. Exactly.
Which all will not be watching.
Will not be tuning in. That's like, honestly, girl, you're crazy.
