No men's team has won back-to-back World Cups since 1962. But on Monday morning, Lionel Messi, 39 years old, in what many expect to be his last ever tournament, tries to become the first. His opponent is actually a teenager he once held in a bathtub. On today's podcast, we're going to unpack how the World Cup final has been nearly 20 years in the making. And I want to introduce you to two of the star players.

So in 2007, a 20-year-old Lionel Messi was given a five-month-old baby during a charity calendar shoot at the headquarters of his then team, Barcelona.
And at that point he was already a football star?

Now, according to the photographer, the player, 20-year-old Messi, was so shy and such a young, almost a young boy, that he didn't actually really know how to even hold the baby at first. And now that baby, whose name is Lamin Yamal, is 19 years old. He plays for Spain and he's about to face off against Messi in the World Cup final on Sunday local time and Monday morning here in Australia.
insane it's incredible how is that possible it's it's just the craziest kind of collision of destinies yeah and Yamal is probably Spain's best player and so you have this incredible story of players you know almost 20 years apart that met they met you know almost 20 years ago and they're going to meet again in a couple of days and do they have any relationship now I think that they know each other from kind of the professional circuit. They've faced off against each other many times. The photo itself first went viral in 2024 when Jamal's father, so you have to remember Jamal was 17 at this point, already playing for Spain. He posted the photo on his Instagram and the caption was, the beginning of two legends.
And so his father was absolutely right. And so the photo has now resurfaced. And what is crazy over the last couple of days is that the photographer, that photographer who said that Messi was shy, he said he didn't actually realize that the baby in the photo was Jamal until Jamal's father put up that image.
Wow.
So he had forgotten. I mean, that makes total sense to me that you wouldn't kind of really register the name of the tiny baby that's being used in the charity photo shoot.
