Chapter 1: What is the blue sky meditation and its purpose?
Welcome back. One of the ways in which our interior reality is often described within the world of meditation is as weather. When we think of the weather, we know it is constantly changing. We can characterize it as good or bad, which often comes out of really what we want the weather to be. But the weather comes and goes. The seasons come and go and change.
Chapter 2: How can observing inner weather improve emotional awareness?
And the sky is constantly changing. And yet, though the weather moves around the world, the world remains solid. In exactly the same way, the practitioner of meditation aspires to a solidity of presence but while still allowing the movement of the interior reality of thought, feeling, sensation, reaction, is not caught up in them.
In this meditation, we will begin to practice a little more, simply watching the weather of our own inner sky. So let's begin.
Chapter 3: What techniques are used to visualize the blue sky?
Entering the time of meditation, marking this sacred time for us with our ritual gesture, with the deliberate intention to dwell in the present moment, at least in these moments. We enter as fully as we can into this experience. We sit gently.
We are aware of the connection of the floor beneath our feet, the chair and cushion supporting us, the spine open, the breath clear, breathing with every pore of our skin. Breathing from the soles of our feet to the crown of our head. Breathing from the tips of the fingers on one hand to the tips of the fingers on the other.
Chapter 4: How do clouds represent thoughts and emotions during meditation?
Breathing gently, peacefully, calmly. And following the rhythm of the breath, we try and find that moment that exists at the very heart of the breath cycle, where the in-breath becomes the out-breath, where the out-breath becomes the in-breath. Finding that place of perfect stillness, a still point within a cycle of movement.
And following our breath to the very center of our being, we allow the visualization of a beautiful field on a summer's day. Picturing that field
Chapter 5: What is the significance of returning to stillness in meditation?
its long grass, a gentle breeze, the warmth upon your skin.
And slowly walking into the field, feeling the grass around you, feeling its movement with the breeze.
Gently feeling the warmth upon your back, upon your shoulders. You begin to walk uphill. And as you reach the top of the hill, you sit down and lie back upon the warm earth. All around you, the buzzing of life
Chapter 6: How can this meditation practice help with daily stress?
All around you the deep green of the summer grass. All around you, you can feel the deep presence of this space. All your worries and stresses left outside the field. Lying upon the earth, you give your weight completely to the ground. And so your legs, hips, spine, shoulders are all relaxed, all at peace. And looking up into the clear blue sky, you are aware of the depth of its color.
An enormous field of blue that goes on beyond the possibility of your sight. Resting in the awareness of the blue. Feeling the warmth of the sun. Nowhere to go. Nothing to do. A simple moment of peace. And as you breathe, breathe now from your belly. Breathing deeply and gently. Looking up into the deep blue of the sky.
And in the corner of your vision, you begin to see a cloud that is slowly moving across the sky. And as the cloud gets nearer, you can feel a subtle change in the air, a cooling, the promise of moisture. As the cloud continues to move towards you, you can feel its shadow beginning to reach you. The blue is secluded for a while. The cloud is overhead. You do not worry about it.
You just notice the different sensations the cloud brings as opposed to the clear sky. For a few moments there is the lightest of rain. A rain that cools, delights, energizes. And then slowly the cloud begins to move on. And you feel again the warmth of the air. the warmth of the sun, looking up into the clear blue. And you reflect that your mind is like this sometimes.
There are times of sunshine, times of rain, times of clear light, Times of cloud. Times of storms. And times of calm. The weather changes. The blue sky and the earth continue. The internal weather changes. the blue sky of the I of your being persists, all held in being by divine love, all held in being by grace.
Gently then you begin to get up from the ground and still warmed from the sun, aware of the blue sky above you and the earth beneath you. You walk back down the hill through the long grass. And coming to the edge of the field, you take a moment to look back, knowing that you can come back here whenever you wish. Making the intention now to recognize thoughts and feelings as just the weather.
Just the weather. And stepping away from the field, you are at once aware of your feet upon the ground, your back supported by the chair or the cushion. You begin to move your fingers and your toes. You take a stretch if you need it. You take a moment of gratitude. And then you allow the sound of the bell to draw you back to the activity of the day. Thank you.
