What signs indicate weakness disguised as strength?
Welcome to the Daily Stoic Podcast, designed to help bring those four key Stoic virtues, courage, discipline, justice, and wisdom into the real world.
There are some things that look like strength but aren't. An aggressive, mean person can seem strong, but oftentimes they aren't. It's an act. All cruelty, Seneca wrote, springs from weakness. The bully, almost invariably, has been bullied. And so it goes for ego. To the untrained eye can be mistaken for confidence. The person's self-centeredness, their certainty, their entitlement. This seems like the way that only the most important and gifted person in the world could get away with acting. In reality, that person doesn't feel that way inside at all. On the contrary, they feel very small. Nero, for instance, demanded that enormous audiences celebrate his greatness. This was also the same emperor who banished a poet from Rome for being too talented and thus a threat.
We have to be wise enough to recognize these signs of weakness in our leaders and our bosses and the people that we look up to. Most of all, we have to recognize it in ourselves. Confidence is quiet. It doesn't need to be celebrated or worshiped. True strength and power are restrained. They are not easily threatened. They don't need to make themselves felt, except for in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Ego is not just the enemy. It is the canary in the coal mine. It is a sign that you're going in the wrong direction. You're not as good or as strong or as secure as you think you are. Ego is the enemy. I mean, I got it tattooed on my arm. And of course, I wrote a book about it, which you can grab signed copies of here at The Painted Porch or at store.dailystoic.com.
And we have the ego is the enemy coin, which I know plenty of people carry around with them. I've seen coaches hand them out to their teams. You can check all that out at store.dailystoic.com.
I don't know if you've ever done any live shopping, but it's blowing up. And some of the kids, I don't know if I call them kids, but some of the Gen Z kids on my staff had to tell me about it. They really love it because you can find vintage stuff and collectible stuff. I was looking at some videos of people selling vintage band tees and records and watches and And it's real people selling. Like if you're going to an estate sale or a really cool, trendy shop, not, you know, overpriced stuff, not produced stuff. There's no ads, no marketing. And people are on there explaining their stuff, why you'd like it, what's cool about it, where they got it. Like I love buying stuff on auctions. So I think I'm going to like whatnot.
And I think you will, too. There are people making over a million dollars a year on Whatnot. In fact, that number has doubled in the last year. Whatnot is the largest dedicated live shopping platform, whether it's beauty, collectibles, electronics, luxury fashion, even cookies. Sellers are building real thriving businesses on Whatnot. So you can go live, show off your projects, and turn that into real income. People selling on Whatnot sell 10 times more than on other major marketplaces, and that's because you're not just listing products, you're building real connections with buyers.

You know what silently kills sales teams? The inability to see what's happening in their pipeline. And part of the reason they can't do that is because they use software or CRM that's so complicated that people don't even log in. I do this all the time. You get some tool and you're like, I'm going to use it. And then... then it's so complicated you don't use it. And that's where today's sponsor, Pipedrive, comes in. It's an easy, intelligent CRM loved by growing sales teams, and most important, actually used by them.
How can we recognize ego in ourselves and others?
Pipedrive gives your team one complete, trusted record of every customer and deal.
