Welcome to the Daily Stoic Podcast, designed to help bring those four key Stoic virtues, courage, discipline, justice, and wisdom into the real world.

How do Stoics define a 'pauper' despite great wealth?

Ryan Holiday 0:15
The wealthiest person is a pauper. We think they have it all, and in a way they do. They have money, they have power, they have a private jet and an enormous amount of access. Look at Marcus Aurelius. Look at what he commanded. Look at Seneca or Cicero or Cato, their estates, their natural talents, their influence. Look at plenty of other wealthy Romans or ancients who had even more. And yet what we miss is that they, for all of this, were still fundamentally constrained. They were limited in all the ways that human beings are limited. No control of the weather, fundamentally mortal, etc. They were also impoverished, as all humans are. Not enough time, never fully satisfied. And we've been talking about that great song, A Satisfied Mind, recently, and it's haunting line.
Ryan Holiday 1:03
The wealthiest person is a pauper. And how especially poor many rich people are when it comes to relationships, to contentment, to peace. And we are not exceptions to this, whatever our net worth happens to be. And worse, we all make ourselves poorer than we need to be in our craving for more and our ignoring of what actually matters in life and the way we waste our time or in the delusions we hold. We seem to think that there is some kind of escape velocity when it comes to money, that if we can just get to a certain amount, we will be beyond this. how much more evidence do you need that this is simply not true? The Stoics understood that the wealthiest person can still be a pauper, poor in peace, poor in contentment, poor in perspective.

I'm on the road right now doing talks all over the country. I love traveling. I love going to new places. The thing I don't like about it, though, is I don't get to sleep in my bed at home, which I like, not just because it's home, but because I have an eight sleep on my bed. I've had an eight sleep on my bed, I don't know, five years. I love it. My wife loves it. We love it because it cools the mattress.
Ryan Holiday 3:45
It heats the mattress. You can have different sides cooled at different temperatures. It's even how I wake up in the morning. Instead of an annoying alarm clock or that, you know, horrible sound on your phone, it lightly buzzes you awake. And then when you're up, you want to turn it off, you just tap the mattress. There's all sorts of awesome features in my Eight Sleep. It was worth every penny.

Why does money fail to buy peace, time, and satisfaction?

Ryan Holiday 4:04
The point is, I love my Eight Sleep and the Eight Sleep keeps getting better. Eight Sleep users report up to 32% better sleep and up to 34% vaginal.
