Chapter 2: How did New Coke flop in 1985 and what lessons can we learn?
With a Run DMC cassette. Yeah, if you all remember, yeah, you were raised in hell. And if you remember, a lot of us were kids, maybe some of you older, that's fine. It was such a big deal because Coca-Cola, it's one of the oldest products that we have here in America. Everybody loves Coca-Cola. There's a new recipe for Coca-Cola. Everyone's excited to try it with a different can and everything.
And it was a major, major letdown. As Danny G said earlier... It lasted three months. And when you think of all the campaigning, all the advertising, all the money they put into that, it lasted three months, grand opening, grand closing. So that got us thinking about the biggest flops in history. I don't want to take the answers, but you shouldn't call it with an obvious answer.
Give us a good one, because if you're going to say New Coke, what do you immediately also think? Crystal Pepsi. Crystal Pepsi. And I wonder, there are people that say that Saturday Night Live, making fun of it by doing crystal gravy and doing all these funny bits, sort of didn't help it. And when you realize that cola is just a darker color, did we need crystal Pepsi? But that was a big launch.
I remember as a kid, they made such a big deal about crystal Pepsi. That was another one, yeah. So on the day where we're all hoping that our teams get it right, NFL draft night. What are some of the biggest flops in movies, TV brands? Mike, who runs this place, had a good one. Who? Mike, who runs this take and who runs this place. You know about most recently Avatar.
That recent Avatar, I didn't hear a buzz about that. I think it won an Oscar for some digital editing or something. I don't know anybody who was talking about that movie. It's not that the movie was horrible. It's just they didn't get enough people to go to the theaters to see it.
Well, then that's a flop.
You're putting that much money into a movie. I thought it made a lot of money, didn't it? I thought so too. But hold on.
Let me ask you this.
I'm not debating that it's a huge brand, that I love the whole Avatar, Pandora Land, whatever it is that they have at Disney. It's one of my favorite rides out there. I love it. I love it. Yeah, they're getting rid of the Monsters, Inc. building or the ride to make way for Avatar Land. I love the ride. I love the little land out there. I love the concept.

Chapter 3: What are some of the most notorious product flops in history?
I remember. I saw Waterworld in theaters with my grandparents.
On another day, Sam, we're going to make a list of our favorite fun facts about you. Hey, can I do one that's sort of in our industry? How about when Howard Stern retired from Terrestrial Radio, how they hyped up David Lee Roth as the new morning guy? That was a big one. That was like, because, I mean, you're replacing Howard Stern, right? That's a big move. That's a big opportunity.
And you've got to have a big personality to come in and do that. Now, thinking back, you're like, yeah, Diamond Dave is a dynamic dude, no doubt.
Wow, that alliteration, man. Dynamic Dave is a, or what did you say? Diamond Dave is a dynamic dude. Yeah. That's a tongue twister.
Say it four times, Sam. But how are you going to have this guy? How are you going to have him follow Howard Stern and think that's going to work? You know what I mean? How do you expect that to work? And we all did, but it didn't, obviously. How long do you think that lasted? I'm going to look that up. Diamond Dave? I don't think it lasted more than two months. Probably a two-year deal, I bet.
Nah, that dude was not on the air for two years. No way. While I give you two sports ones, we're going to go to all your feedback. The biggest flops on the anniversary of New Coke. 41 years ago? I have two in the world of sports, and I think you guys will agree. One a year ago, we joked about it for like a week, and then it just fizzled.
How many people, little leaguers, pony ball players, high school kids, like, I need to get a torpedo bat. Yeah, that conversation just flopped. Torpedo bats? That was a week-long fad. And another one. Do you remember Dan Byer? I know Dan Byer knows this one because he's a uniform guy. Do you remember when Major League Baseball did the futuristic in-the-future uniforms?
Yeah, it was like turn-ahead-the-clock.
Turn-ahead-the-clock, and they were all sleeveless with huge logos, and it was terrible. By the way, David Lee Roth, who's a legend, okay? I'm not downplaying his legacy, but I'm saying when he replaced Howard Stern, arguably the greatest talk show host of our era at the time. Era. His show lasted approximately four months. January 3rd, 2006. He was like New Coke.

Chapter 4: How do NFL teams avoid making draft day mistakes?
Won the championship and then defunct. Oh, that's a bummer. Who else we got, Danny? All right, let's go to Vegas. Tripp. Tripp. What up, man? What up, Tripp McNeely?
What's up, gentlemen? I got a quick one for DB for golf, and then I got several for y'all with some explanations. I would say Ty Tryon when he came out in the next greatest thing in golf. And then other stuff would be this. How about in the 80s when Colgate tried to make frozen lasagna? Cheetos tried to make lip balm. And then also, how about the Galaxy? I think it was the Galaxy Note 7.
It was only out for a year because it would blow up and it wasn't allowed on planes.
If you can't bring your phone on a plane, it's not going to work out. But that is funny. Colgate trying to make lasagna? What? No, if you look up a list of failed products, Colgate thought that they're so branded mentally with... And like minty. And dental products.
Yeah.
They tried to go into like a frozen food chain with their brand. And everyone's like Colgate food? Yeah. It was a big fail apparently. It's almost a compliment to them being so much associated to teeth products.
Minty toothpaste.
Yeah. Back to the phones, because there's so many. Like I said, TV shows, businesses, brand names, sneakers. There's so many things that you thought were going to be the next big thing, and they just weren't. Let's go to St. Paul, Minnesota. Mike.
So I was thinking the jump to conclusions, Matt.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Lil' Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people? I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Lil' Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back At It podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Danny G's got you lined up. The biggest flops in sports, entertainment, products, stores, you name it, because tonight we're hoping for no flops for our teams, Danny, right? Yep. Let's start in Virginia. Mike is on the line. Mikey. Yeah. Hey, how you doing, man? First time caller. Thank you. Thanks, man. What's up? 320, 6'3", 320. Hi, guys.
How's it going, man? What's up? Hey, man. Talk about biggest flops. I'm a big Metallica fan, but how about that St. Anger album?
You know, people hate that Anger, man. People hate that album. By the way, last week was the anniversary of 72 Seasons. Their most recent one came out three years ago, but people still hate on St. Anger.
It sounded different.
It was the drum sound. It was very industrial sounding. No solos, guitar solos. I mean, he tried something different. He had a couple good songs. There are people that make an argument for it that like it, but it's fair to bring up in this conversation for sure. All right, let's go to Vegas. Brent. Hey, Brent.
Hey, what's going on, guys? What up, man? Hey, so I got one for you, Rich. The Shakeway.
The Shakeway. Believe it or not, I bet you that sold more than we even think. I'm going to look that up. Because, yeah, it's ridiculous, but Rich actually had one of those. While you look that up, let's go to Dayton, Ohio. Kevin. What's up, Kev? Hey, guys. You guys always have the best topics. Oh, thanks, man.

Chapter 7: How do listeners view the biggest flops in sports history?
Because no one was doing chicken. It was all burgers. Cheeseburgers, cheeseburgers. So they were like, well, we have to answer. What do we do? And someone came up with the idea of a chicken nugget. So before that, it was like, what is that? So competition, like Kavino said, in sports, in business, anything, just gives you better product.
