1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Chapter 2: What was the significance of Fernando Mendoza's ringtone during the draft?
In the back seat? Like, what are you talking about? And he goes, we found a giant rat. I'm like, giant rat? Like, how big? Dude, you're like the Chicago Cubs. Ha ha. And dude, seriously, but he was like, it's kind of big or something. Like, so I don't know if you want to take that car now or bring it back for later or something. And it since perished. And I'm like, what do you mean, dude?
And he showed me a full on video and Sam, I'll show you. And I'll expound, expand on our Patreon on Monday because it's more of a drawn out story. But the dude was like, you could take the car. We ripped half of it out. So half of a monster rat carcass? The other half is stuck in there, and to take the rest out, we're going to have to remove a lot of valves and part of the engine. I'm like, what?
You want me to take the car with a dead carcass in it? No, half a dead carcass. Because I was able to rip out half. He's like, yeah, but it might take another two hours or something. He's just letting you know if you want to take the car. I'm not going to. No. Listen. Juan. His name is Juan. He's great. I'm like, Juan, I'm not taking the car. I'm the same guy. Rich and I use the same guy.
I'm like, I'm not going to take the car with a dead thing in it. And, you know, please do whatever you can. So thank you to my friend Juan and all the fine people at BMW because they did remove it. But I was there the entire morning up until now because they had to take it apart to remove the rest of it and clean it out and make sure that it didn't, you know, chew on any wires or anything.
But you like Larry David and Curb where he gets the free coffee and licorice at least or what? No, I just sat there so bored out of my mind, dude. So anyway, I made it here on time, but now my car is rat-free at least, and I live to tell the story. But I'll expand on our Patreon on Monday. Oddly enough, when I first met you, your car smelled like Drakkar Noir. Now it smells like rat carcass.
Yo, seriously. I'm like, they really thought I was going to take it with this dead critter? And it was. It was pretty big, significant. But I was like, is that common?
Yeah.
Luckily, knock on wood, nothing ever got in my house. But I guess if you talk about the back part of my attic that is in my house, but I would hear a little once in a while. Yeah. There was a little opening in my roof. That would go to our storage area of the attic. And thank God, nothing ever found its way into our actual home. That you know of. Well, I mean, you would see droppings and things.
This dude was living in my car, I guess.

Chapter 3: What was the reaction to the unusual moments in the NFL Draft?
And I think it worked. But I think there are, of course, people are going to complain. Few observations.
number one i loved how it moved along right can we all agree yeah no i agree um secondly i hated the fact that social media seemed to be moments ahead of the broadcast because much like your buddy who texts you like yeah bro and you're like um five seconds behind you oh you son of a we should not be watching a broadcast that's behind our social media feed
It's the ultimate spoiler, and it's sort of a bummer. I think that there should be some type of etiquette, like give it a 30-second beat or a minute beat, because all right, Scoops Callahan. Etiquette on social media? I don't think so, but yeah, I agree it's annoying. But to me, it's just...
The fact that people heard about a draft pick on their Twitter feed and then were like, oh, they're about to announce it. The pick's in. Yeah. It's anticlimactic. I think it was Peter Schrager who going into the draft was telling everybody online, please don't ruin it. Let us find out when the commissioner announces it. But that's, you know. I had two friends. High hopes.
I had two friends text me, and then I announced that text of picks to my friend sitting next to me, and he got very upset at me.
And one of the texts was to me and my friend Dylan from another friend, and it was about just the bills trading back, and he was like, I don't want to know this. You had a whole conversation, and they still were not caught up to real time. Like, imagine if you're a Cardinals fan, and you're like, well, I wonder what they're going to go with. And your buddy's like, Jeremiah Love, bro.
And you're like... Dude, I didn't even see it yet. Honestly, I just hate that aspect. But that's not going to be changed. You're right. It's not like social media is going to have some type of etiquette. Just don't look at your phone. Don't be online if you really want it to be in suspense. It's like if one of your kids has a game on a Saturday or Sunday during football season.
and you DVR the game, so you sort of put, like, sports blinders on, and you're like, oh, I hope no one tells me. We have to operate that way for the draft. You know what it is? You don't even consciously look at your phone. It's just almost habit now. So you do it without even thinking. You're like, ah! Ah, son of a bitch! It ruins it for you.
Because any sort of lull in the actual broadcast, you pick up your phone, and spoilers left and right. So, yeah, social media was ahead of the actual feed. Yeah. You know, there is a sentiment on social media. I think there's a lot of people, Rich, that thought maybe it was just them, but it was most people. Because I use Sling, and it was ahead of my feed.

Chapter 4: How does the NFL Draft compare to other sports events in terms of excitement?
Imagine how next-level passionate you've got to be to be that type or that breed. And it's not like Pittsburgh's a weak-ass town where nothing goes on, right? They're just that pumped to show up. So congrats to you. I commend it. That was crazy. Like I said, the speed of the draft was cool. Some emotional moments, as always. I don't think it was a top emotional, surprising, crazy draft.
What, Ty Simpson going to the Rams? It was like, ooh, shocking. That was like the big... Not a lot of shocks and not a lot of... You know, there's always these takeaways. We actually hinted at it yesterday that there's always going to be some sort of funny joke or some sort of fun side story. There wasn't a whole lot of that other than...
fernando mendoza's ringtone or something like you know there wasn't a whole lot of like did you see what happened the the one dude's butt getting on the screen okay all right but there wasn't like chargers on the clock the chargers logos right there on the on the side you know it's usually like hey who's got the hot mom or oh look who's girlfriends like grab it at their phone why rich because everyone is so aware of that now yeah so it was it was a little so we're seeing a shift yeah chocolate shock
Yeah, a little boring in that nature. But I will say this. You know how during football season we do Rich's big TV game of the week? Yeah. I was at my buddy's house, and this didn't get the big TV. I got to be honest with you. Well, I would say after the first round, that's fair. No, after Jeremiah Love went to Arizona, my son and I went to our friend's house. Kids were chilling, playing ball.
We were just watching, having a drink. And the sense was like, dude, want to put on the Knicks-Hawks game? And we were watching the NBA, and we had on an iPad the draft because, truthfully, that's the way to do it.
I don't mind that.
The Knicks-Hawks game last night, or even I was watching the Mets game also, going back and forth because the Mets were tied up. So there was some good baseball and some great NBA playoffs last night. So, to me, the NFL draft wasn't even, like, my sole attention. Man. Maybe I'm just a big draft nerd then because I'm excited for the second round. There are so many.
There's like a list of 10 to 12 really, really good players who could have went first round that are still sitting there available right now. And I get it. And I love your enthusiasm. Maybe it's also because I'm a Niners fan and they sat the first round out. They traded back.
No, of course that makes sense.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of the Yankees' uniform traditions?
But something else. Sounds like a xylophone. Sounds like Sam on the glockenspiel. No, not that one. That ring does fit his personality. That was the meme that went around. The other observation I made was, yeah, they had great coverage. He's there being interviewed. He throws the Raiders hat on right away. Looks happy, looks proud. But what a big moment, I thought, for Taylor McGregor.
She was the... ESPN broadcaster there covering like, yeah, poolside at the house. That's like a really random assignment now, like because that's a big, big story because it was such a story that he wasn't going to show. So whoever they had to cover it, that's a big assignment for somebody, in my opinion. So I took note of that. Like, that's pretty cool.
Like, imagine being part of those festivities. Like, she's there with the family celebrating, interviewing. It's a moment she'll never forget. Yeah. And Danny G was saying off the air, like, family members should have jumped in the pool. You would have, Rich. I jump in the pool when my team wins a big game. So props to Taylor McGregor. Cannonball.
I sent you guys a still shot of Peter Woods when the Chiefs moved up to grab him. They got him with their second pick. But it was great because it must have been a white party. I'm not talking about nationalities. I'm talking about the kind that Covino. No, they were actually wearing all the green outfits. Yeah, Covino refused one time to wear all white to a party.
But Peter, he's wearing a green suit. Everyone else at his house is wearing all white. And he's sitting in the middle. And mostly hip hop fans will probably get this. But the moment I saw it, I'm like, that's the Tupac I ain't mad at you video. I think that's exactly what was going on. Did they confirm that, Danny, or no? No. No, I haven't seen anything. I just thought it was to put focus on him.
Like, we're all going to wear the same thing, kind of the background, and then he'll be, like, centered and more easily recognizable. Do you notice when guys sort of know where they're going, they color coordinate? Did you notice, like, Jeremiah Love had, like, some maroonish Cardinals suit going on? I didn't think about that. Like, if you get in, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, of course.
You may want to coordinate with what you're going with. Yeah, there was a couple of those, but hey. Great night. Great night. Congratulations to everybody that went first round. And you know what, guys? If you want to chime in on your observations, we always keep it open for you. The most inclusive show on radio, 877-99 on Fox. It's sort of like things that made you go, hmm, NFL draft Thursday.
Any criticism? I mean, listen, I'm not saying I don't have opinions, but... I'm the guy that thought Trey Lance was going to save the 49ers within the last decade. So no one really knows how it's going to unfurl and unfold once these young guys, some of them don't even make the team, right? I mean, stranger things have happened.
But I would say the two big observations are some people saying Jeremiah Love is

Chapter 6: How did the Yankees' uniform rules affect player performance?
Yeah, he doesn't seem that stupid. Translation, translation. Hey, I'm happy for the kid. Seems like a good young player, but I certainly didn't put my Sean McVay vote for this guy. That's definitely the vibe I got from that. We had other options we could have gone with. And he also mentioned multiple other guys in the quarterback room, making it seem like it's already a snug room.
We got Jimmy, we got Stetson, we got backups. Yeah, it's clear that he didn't co-sign on that. He didn't vouch for that. But he is obviously still... Saying the right things. He sounded sunnier in that clip. I've heard other things where he sounded more annoyed by it. But that one, he kind of sounds like he's kind of coming to grips with it.
I heard the clip where he was like, son of a... But no, so your thoughts, we'll take them all. Observations from night one of the NFL draft. Night two, my Niners kick things off in one hour and 34 minutes. So the 49ers, there's even speculation, Denny, they're going to keep trading back because they think their needs will be available overnight.
longer so they keep them as you notice the niners are one of the teams that did not have a pick last night because if you think your guy will still be around that you want like why you know if you could get a little something that's what they've been doing so uh nfl night two coming up and uh we'll talk some nba and i want to talk about your yankees because there's a story that i find very funny it has to do with their uniforms tradition it's really

Chapter 8: How did the hosts wrap up their thoughts on the NFL Draft and sports culture?
Because up until last year, you could have a mustache. Those are the Mattingly rules, I guess. You could have a mustache, but you couldn't have the Guidry rules, but you couldn't have a beard. So they actually changed the rules last year for Devin Williams. And now the Yankees are trying to push even more this year. I saw the headline. Yankees alternate road jerseys? Yeah.
Players react to a possible new uniform. Now, let it be known. The story is that some of the star players went to the executives, upper management, and were like, yeah, we want to wear an alternate away jersey.
Now, if you're a fan of baseball and you're something that follows the history of jerseys in all sports, the Yankees are the only team that has stuck to traditional pinstripes, road grays, nothing else. Nothing else at all. Except one time when they did the Field of Dreams game and they had some piping on their jersey. Besides that, the Yankees never had a City Connect.
In fact, there's only two teams that don't have a City Connect jersey ā One team with no real city, the A's, because they're city-less, and the Yankees. And this, you know, tradition thing again, I think it gets in their way. The Cubs, the Red Sox, other, you know, the Reds. I credit you.
I know you probably got it from, like, I don't know, one of your favorite shows, This Is Us or How I Met Your Mother. But sometimes tradition is making the same mistake over and over again, right? Like, sometimes you got to shake it up or shake it off. Who'd you get that from? Scott Farrell? Yeah.
Sometimes you got to listen to your Fox Sports radio. Sometimes you just got to shake it.
Oh, shake it. Oh, sometimes you got to shake it up and realize that it's 2026 and you got to mix things up and I don't know, step into a new culture. They're not even trying to do anything crazy. The suggestion would be the Yankees, who, as you know, the pinstripes at home, that gray road jersey that just says New York. It's a drab, boring-away jersey, but again, it's tradition.
It's been around since Babe Ruth. It's been around for a long time, but they've slightly changed it. They were the Highlanders. Their old Yankee pinstripe, they were like a creamy yellow sort of color, right? So it's not like it was always exactly the same, but the pinstripes is what they're known for. Now, let's make this very clear. The story is The pinstripes stay.
When they play at home, they're like, we're not trying to change that tradition. The pinstripes are classic. That's what we wear. Their request is to wear a variation, a different away jersey, and alternate it every once in a while. And there's speculation that the alternate jersey might be their practice jersey, that navy blue, just reversing the colors of the gray and blue.
