You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. Cooper Flagg won the Rookie of the Year over Conn Knipple. I've been saying all season long that I thought that he was the obvious choice. Doc Rivers, when he joined us at the end of the season... said, boy, you've got to understand how Conn Knipple changed the Hornets.

Chapter 2: Who is Cooper Flagg and why was he named NBA Rookie of the Year?
Play of the day. All of that forthcoming. One more note on Cooper Flagg. Averaging 21, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists per game. So he joins Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Luca as the only rookies since 1970 to average those numbers per game. And, you know, when you think about Bird was probably 24 when he came in. Michael would spend a couple of years in college.
And Luca, I don't know how old Luca was when he got here. Was he 20, Marvin?
I think he was 20, but he played like eight years professionally in Europe.
He did. He did. All right. Dylan, what kind of poll question you got for me today to start out first hour?
Well, Dan, I was going to ask who deserved the NBA Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flagg or Conn Knipple, but it sounds like that's pretty cut and dry. Yes, it is. If you took out that little run that Cooper Flagg had at the end of the season, though, like the 50-40-30 game. Yeah, but I can't.
All right, hypothetically. Like he did it. He did do it. No, he did it. So I can't take that out. And show me. Rookies hit the wall. All these rookies normally hit the wall. They talk about it. There's a certain number of games. I don't know what it is. You know, it might be 60 games or 50 games where they hit the wall. They're not used to playing this many games in a season.
The fact that Cooper Flagg was that much better at the end of the year tells me an awful lot about him. Yes, Paulie.
I had that wall you talked about. In March, when Cooper Fly got to game 50, for the next three weeks, he averaged 19 points a game. That was a dip because he was averaging like 22 before that. But the last three weeks of the season, he averaged 29 points per game. He also led the NBA in minutes the last three weeks of the season.
Yeah, I mean, this isn't a normal 19-year-old. And he's not sneaky athletic.

Chapter 3: What insights does Reggie Miller provide about the Pistons' playoff struggles?
He's going to be great. And I think if you watch him play now, you know, I'm going to be nitpicky here. I didn't like his jump shot when he was in college. And but those are things you work on. I thought that, you know, he wasn't a knockdown shooter. I'd love for him to study Kevin Durant and kind of get in that comfort zone in that two point range. Now, everybody wants to shoot threes.
But I think he'll be able to get his shot because he can beat you off the dribble. He can take it to the hoop. But I thought his jump shot was a little slow. And once again, I'm just nitpicking here. But you get those go-to moves that everybody knows what you're going to do and they can't stop you.
That's when you know you elevate your game to, he's going to go over there and he's going to take the jump shot. Or he's going to go left and beat me off the dribble. And you know it, and you still can't stop it. That's the fun part when you watch younger players. What do they add to their games? Speaking of adding to their games, Detroit needs to add somebody who can score.
Because Cade Cunningham, I'm looking at usage. There's only two players who have the ball more. Their usage rate is higher than him. Man, I think what Orlando is doing is just, we're going to make you work for everything. Cade Cunningham has to work for everything. And they don't have that second score. That's part of the problem here with Detroit. And give Orlando credit. I mean, that was...
1990s basketball last night. The entire series has been that way. But Detroit relies on Cade Cunningham too much. He's the only guy who can get a bucket. Jalen Duren, he can get points, but usually pick and roll or offensive rebounds, putbacks.
But if you look at great teams, the Thunder have SGA and Jalen Williams, Celtics, Tatum and Brown, Nuggets, Joker, Murray, Warriors when they won Steph and Clay, Bucs when they won Giannis, Chris Middleton, Lakers, LeBron and AD. And turnovers are killing Detroit. You have 20 turnovers last night that created 23 points for Orlando. It wasn't pretty, but you don't get extra points for aesthetics.
It's go out there and win a game. And when people say playoff basketball is different, if you watch last night, that's playoff basketball. Everything matters. This is where you know you have to win this game if you're Detroit. You're down 3-1 now. You have to win that game last night. So every possession matters. And the physicality was on display last night. And Orlando didn't back down.
I think we think of Detroit as, you know, that's a rough and tumble team. Orlando did not back down. And they didn't play well. Jalen Suggs made one more basket than I did last night. Paul Banquero had four baskets last night. And they won. Yes, Marv. And the difference is they have guys like Franz Wagner and Desmond Bain who can get you buckets.
And the thing is, the Pistons are looking like the first LeBron stint Cavaliers team where it's him and a bunch of guys, especially in the playoffs. We're going to stop you and make Tobias Harris try to beat us. Yeah, Tobias Harris maybe five years ago, but I don't want him to be my second option. But you're watching Cade Cunningham, and Orlando is basically saying, you're not beating us.

Chapter 4: How does the gambling case of Brendan Sorsby impact NCAA regulations?
Yes, Mark. Is there going to be like an Indiana Pacers type of run for another team where it's like they made the finals? Who would it be? That's a great question. Like, is Orlando going to be the Pacers this year if they happen to win this series? I mean, you're not scared of anybody in the East. You're not scared. Yeah, you shouldn't be. I don't know if anybody gets scared of anybody.
Like, who gets scared? You're never going to hear somebody go, man, we're scared of the Pacers. Well, you know what? They're a scary team. Like the Thunder, that's a scary... You know what? We're not scared of them. I don't think we can beat them. Maybe it's scary how good they are, but they don't scare you.
Chapter 5: What are the implications of modern betting technology on college sports?
Correct, yes. I mean, they're grown men. They're not like... Come on, you got to come out of the locker room. No. That's the worst part about the whole Michael Jordan myth, mythology. Man, we were scared to death of Michael Jordan. You were scared? Reggie Miller, coming up soon, was not scared of Michael Jordan. Reggie was not, no. You can't be scared. John Starks wasn't afraid of Michael Jordan.
Right.
These guys were taking him to seven, never got to seven games in the finals, but he sure did in the Eastern Conference.

We really believe that seed oils were inherently inflammatory. We got it wrong. Many of the problems that we are freaked out about in the world are the result of stress.

Chapter 6: How did Cooper Flagg's performance compare to other rookies this season?
And then Jermaine Jackson's son plays Michael Jackson. Yes. Yes, he is. I heard he is the reincarnation of Michael. And it makes sense because I guess he's always been around Michael, obviously.
um younger in his life so the mannerisms from what i've been hearing and reading are there but i will give you a bird's eye view after i see the film unless unless you've seen it i have not seen it okay and i have not seen it did you ever meet michael jackson i never met no i never met him went to three concerts in my life
two were the victory tour this is right after thriller came off came out like the mid to late uh 80s uh in dodger stadium um when I didn't have any money. I still don't have any money, but when I really didn't have any money. And then I went to the 30th anniversary of CBS. CBS did a special right before 9-11, I believe, that weekend in Madison Square Garden.
So those were the three Michael Jackson concerts I went to. Yes, Marvin. On that 30th anniversary show, Michael Jackson doing Billie Jean, and you could see Reggie as clear as day. Show the photo of the baby crying. Eyes were like.
I had the hat on. Yes, he did.
Yes. I was like grooving.
He was jamming, DP.
I didn't know that they had you on camera. Oh, it was a vibe. Everyone that was anyone was in the garden that weekend, but that night it was NSYNC performed, Usher performed, Britney Spears performed. It was unbelievable. Reggie, in the garden tonight, the atmosphere won't be the same tonight. Hawks at the Knicks tip off. But why wouldn't it? I'm coming to do a game. Why wouldn't it be?
8 Eastern, NBC, and Peacock. What happened to your Pistons? To my Pistons? I don't know. They're not mine. Look, you had a sense coming into the playoffs. I know they played great down the stretch, and I know Cade was out for quite a bit of time, but he came back.

Chapter 7: What factors influenced the Rookie of the Year voting this year?
And you're seeing that when a team like Orlando, who only shot, what, 28% from three last night. Again, they were at home, though. And they still win. It shows you the struggles that the Pistons have shooting the basketball. If you're going to be a championship caliber team, you have to have another score.
And if I look, SGA and Jalen Williams, Tatum and Brown, Joker and Murray, Steph, Clay, Giannis, Chris Middleton, LeBron, AD. Detroit doesn't have that guy. It's Cade. Orlando is just going to beat him up, make him work for everything. And his usage rate is really high. Basically just wear him down. And Orlando didn't play well at all and ended up winning that game.
Yeah, and again, it's not like they can't go home and win game five and come back and win game six on the road. It's something when you win 60 games, you have the ability to go on the road. But I think they'll find scoring at home because your support players played better at home. I believe they win game five and then they're just going to roll the dice and
I mean, they had their chances to win game four last night, but again, the pressure of Orlando. Orlando's a really good defensive team, and they're playing with so much confidence right now. And again, I had question marks about them coming into the playoffs.
That last regular season game in Boston, when Boston sat everyone, and Boston throttled them, and that was the difference between the seven and eight and all that, and people had question marks. But then they got it right in the play-in situation, and now they're on the cusp of being an eight team, knocking out the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Denver Nuggets last night won, which I expected. DiVincenzo not there. Ant is out as well. Do you like Denver's chances to be able to still win this, given the injuries? I do. I do. I think, no, Denver's dealing with some issues as well. Aaron Gordon didn't play last night for them, and...
look it's one game and they're a championship caliber team they've got a three-time mvp can they go into minnesota win absolutely but like i just highlighted your role players play much better at home and dosumu who was great in that game four who had 43 points uh bones highland i mean these guys are going to get an opportunity without uh dante being out and
I don't see Ant-Man coming back in this series. So it's one game. Can they win it? Absolutely. But Minnesota is a very difficult team to win at home, so that should be a fun game to see. Talking to Reggie Miller, he'll be on the call with Mike Tirico tonight, the Hawks at the Knicks, Madison Square Garden tip-off, Eastern on NBC, and Peacock. Did the voters get it right with Rookie of the Year?
They did, but I want to tell you where Khan lost it. when the league sent out that arbitration and they were hearing the arguments for Cade, they were hearing the arguments for Luka Doncic, if they could be a part of those in-season awards, you didn't have to have your ballots back at the end of the regular season, which it normally is. So that bled into the play-in games.
