Donald Trump has just hit a number that we have never seen in this presidency. That number starts with a two. It's 29% approval. This is the new number from American Research Group, not a left-leaning pollster. And of course, we never obsess under uh over one poll.

We look at an average of polls. I do think this one deserves some attention because it's not just about 29%, it's the trajectory. This same poll. A year ago had Trump at thirty-seven percent approval. And over the last twelve months it dropped to thirty-five and then thirty-four and thirty-two. And you understand how numbers work. Thirty, thirty, thirty three times in a row. And now for the first time in this series, twenty-nine percent approval for Trump, a record low, sixty-eight percent. Disapproval among registered voters, it's basically the same: 30% approval, 68% disapprove. Now, there is some important context here. This is a particularly bad poll for Trump. I respect you too much. We had a great talk about this actually yesterday with Don Laman at the Upper West Side Barnes Noble for my book talk.
I try to give you all the information. And so it is notable and true that this is the lowest. number Trump has ever had twenty nine percent in the AGR poll. But also a week ago Reuter Zipsos had Trump at thirty five. There are other national polls that have Trump, you know, in the low 30s. So I'm not going to tell you the true and singular approval number is tw exactly 29%.

There's margins of error, et cetera. It's not how polling works to say this is the number, but their trajectory is very clear. And there's no way to dismiss that multiple polls show Trump so far underwater. And what's interesting about the American research group poll is that there's maybe like 29 is bad, but if you look under the hood a little bit at the economic numbers, this may really spell disaster for Republicans in the midterms that are now just 40 something days away. Trump's approval on the economy is 26%. 71% disapprove of Trump's handling on the economy. Among independents, only 19% approve of his handling on the economy. 75% disapprove. And incredibly, seventy-two percent say the direction of the economy is getting worse.
So teeny tiny shriveled flaccid approval numbers on the economy. And almost three quarters of the country says, and the economy is going in the wrong direction. Seventy percent say, I expect the economy will be even worse a year from now. Seventy-one percent say, forget what I think about the economy out there.
