What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hello and welcome to the Dom Harvey podcast. This episode's sponsored by the Generate KiwiSaver scheme. And if you stick around just a minute or two, I will let you know why you should consider switching your KiwiSaver over to Generate. But coming up, Silver Fern's captain, Karin Berger.
I want to say I've got a really good relationship with her. So much respect for her and the coach that she is. It's still that respect and fear kind of thing, you know? Yeah.
Today's episode is a re-release. It originally came out three years ago in 2023, the morning after Cardin's 50th test in the black dress. I'm re-issuing it now because a lot has changed since then. The podcast has grown significantly, picking up thousands of new subscribers, and at the time of publishing, Cardin is in Scotland with the Silver Ferns as the team captain for the Commonwealth Games. Making this moment extra special for Cardin is the heartbreak of four years ago when she was forced to miss the Commonwealth Games due to injury. We talk about that in the podcast. In this episode, we also talk about Cardin's move to New Zealand from South Africa by herself at 18 and the seven-year grind to become a Silver Fern.
the devastation of being sent off during her Silver Ferns debut, what it's like playing for coach Dame Noelene Taroa and insights into her coaching methods, Karin also opens up about loneliness, being impossibly hard on herself, her discomfort with vulnerability and much, much more. Listening back now, knowing that Carden is about to captain New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games makes her story of sacrifice and perseverance even more powerful. If you're listening to this for the first time, you are going to love this episode. Hey, massive thanks to my long-term podcast sponsor, Generate. Like a lot of Kiwis, I spent years saying, oh, look at my KiwiSaver account later. Well, it turns out later comes around faster than you think.
And the decisions you make now could be the difference between counting every dollar in retirement or having the freedom to take that trip you've always talked about. I switched my KiwiSaver account over to Generate after they came on board, and honestly, I should have done it sooner. It's so easy. You can do it online in just a few minutes. Generate are an award-winning KiwiSaver provider with strong long-term performance. You can check out their latest returns online or book a free, no-obligation chat with one of their friendly advisors at generatekiwisaver.co.nz forward slash dom. I'll put that in the show notes as well. No pressure, no judgment, no hard sell. They are there to help wherever you're at in your investing journey.
The issue of the scheme is Generate Investment Management Limited. You can view their product disclosure statement and financial advice provider info at generatekiwisaver.co.nz forward slash disclosures. Past performance does not guarantee future returns. And remember, I'm a podcast host. I'm not a financial advisor. This is general info only, and I recommend getting expert advice before making any financial decisions. Okay, here we go. Carden Berger on the Dom Harvey podcast.
Thanks for having me.
What a lovely day. Yesterday afternoon, it was New Zealand versus Australia, and you guys won. Congratulations. And it was a milestone game. It was your 50th game as a Silver Fern. At the end, there was a presentation with a big bunch of flowers and massive highlights were playing on the video screen. And here you are the morning after.
Oh, gosh, yeah. It's been a massive couple of months for us, actually. To be honest, a year. Heaps of netball. So... It's just good to have finished on a high like that last night. Unfortunately we didn't come away with the cup because of the goal differentials but to be able to win the last couple of games against Aussie was amazing and I wasn't aware of the milestone and that it was happening, so I pretty much found out when I arrived at the game. How were you not aware? Well, you know, we don't track how many games we play.
