What is the latest fallout after Scott Pelley’s firing at CBS and why does it matter?

Don Lemon 0:15
Good evening, everyone. Welcome to Lemon Live at 5. Very rarely do we have a story that goes from the morning, well, from last night, to the morning and then into the evening again. And that is the CBS story. There's still more fallout. We have bombshell after bombshell to talk about. As a matter of fact, I went on to the cable news today, moments ago, to discuss, perhaps we'll have a clip of it, in this program, to talk about Scott Pelley, to talk about journalism, to talk about the First Amendment, the freedom of the press, all of it. And a fascinating conversation and fascinating conversations and details bombshells that we're going to share. OK, we'll get to that. But there's a lot happening in Washington as well.
Don Lemon 0:58
Straight to our Washington correspondent, Daniel Grimes. Daniel managed to catch up with lawmakers today who are on the move. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Maxwell Frost, Ms. Kamala Dove. and lots of folks who had some very interesting things to say about CBS and other things. Good evening, Daniel.
Daniel Grimes 1:20
Hey there, Don. Yeah, I mean, a lot of news happening here in D.C. I'll start with the war powers vote. That's just Congress trying to claw back some power from President Trump on Iran. So that's expected to pass. That vote's going to be in a little bit, in a little bit, about an hour from now. So we'll have to wait and see what happens there. But we also have some breaking news from Sydney comloger Dove. Can you go ahead and play that clip, Andy?
Sydney Kamlager-Dove 1:44
What did you just say to me? OK, I said, hey, boo, I love this shirt. It is bright. It is happy. It is effervescent. It is unexpected. And I want more of it.
Daniel Grimes 1:58
So if you watch this morning, you heard Don come for my shirt. The congresswoman said, oh, I like that before. And so I said, wait, wait, wait, I got to get this on tape. So I figured you'd like that, Don.
Don Lemon 2:08
But this is serious journalism, sir.
Daniel Grimes 2:10
Okay. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
Don Lemon 2:13
It is something that she did not mention. I won't go there, but go ahead.
Daniel Grimes 2:17
Rhymes with Ray.
Don Lemon 2:21
It is Pride Month, so I'll give you that. Go on.
Daniel Grimes 2:25
Just this month. Okay, so I did talk to them about, obviously, the serious matters, and including CBS, because as we've seen, Scott Pelley is the most recent victim of Barry Weiss at CBS. And I spoke to a number of lawmakers, and Andy, here's what they had to say. I was really interested in the drama that we're seeing at CBS right now, and Barry Weiss trying to bring it to the right. Can you just speak to the importance of the institution that is CBS?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 2:50
Yes. You know, and this is also part of a much larger landscape. Authoritarians, authoritarian regimes, fascist regimes such as this, they try to intimidate the free press. And they do this both through governmental means, but also through some of these hostile financial takeovers by completely unqualified people. Instead of purging people based on skill, They are engaging in a purge of people, frankly, based on independence.

How are lawmakers and the Washington press reacting to CBS leadership changes?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 3:19
And that's what journalists are supposed to be. CBS is one of the endless and we're all politicians, right? Doesn't mean that they're going to cover us positively, doesn't mean that or negatively or any one way, but their job is to be objective and to call balls and strikes. And what they're doing to CBS is engaging in political intimidation and basically saying, If you don't become a propaganda outlet, then we will shut you down. And if anything, it just goes to show why independent journalism and media is now becoming more important than ever.
Maxwell Frost 3:48
I mean, this is all connected to the fact that we have billionaires that are buying- Can you pause it right there?
Don Lemon 3:53
Can you pause, pause, pause, pause, pause? Because I don't want to gloss over what she said. And she said that without you prompting her, Daniel. And I was just on with Nicole Wallace on MSNBC. And she said to me, she often finds that she is following us in independent media and their editorial catching up with us in independent media on a major, major network like MSNOW. So it's important what Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said.
Daniel Grimes 4:21
And, Don, I think that that point is because, listen, look at us today.
