How did Don Lemon kick off 2026 and set the episode's tone?
good morning happy new year welcome to 2026. i hope you had a good one i certainly had um a great new year's let me do this before hey siri turn on do not disturb i'm gonna make sure my do not disturb is on so that i don't have to deal with um beeping and people calling and texting and all that stuff so uh how are you guys glad that you're here I'm still recovering from New Year's Eve elimination. Man, look, let me tell you, the elimination really turned out. I mean, turned out for the cause. you know what i'm talking about like i said i am still i'm not hung over my voice is still scratchy um it was you know just working hard i am coming down off of a high because it was just really great and i have a i'm starting the year with a new attitude to be more positive i want to talk to you about that to um
to lean into authenticity. That's my thing. And you can still be positive. Oh, and we can make sure that you can still be positive and critical constructively, uh, about ideas, issues, people's people, presidents, administrations on and on and on. Um, And so that's how I feel about it. But look, I got to tell you, New Year's Eve was great. By the way, please hit the like and the thumbs up because it does affect the algorithm and more people become aware of our conversation when you do that. And so I would really appreciate that. The New Year's Eve special was a total success and a total hit. It was a total success and total hit and everybody, no one does it better. Who does that sound like? But it's really true.
The engagement was fantastic. The people who turned out, there were parties everywhere and my producers and folks on the ground, the social media team, went around doing a little reconnaissance or surveillance or whatever you want to call it. And because we wanted to make sure They wanted to, I wasn't even paying attention, but they wanted to see what was happening at other parties and what other people were doing. And there were parties down the street, all kinds of things. Our party, the New Year's Eve party, turned out to be a street party, like a real block party. When you get people dancing in the streets, that's it, it's over. And so they went around the neighborhood. They were taking pictures of everybody, you know, other bars and everybody else's parties.
And they were like, Don, this is it. Like, you're it on this end here in New Orleans for the New Year's Eve party. And it was great. I mean, D.L. Hughley was there. Big Frida was there. The mayor crowned me the king of New Year's Eve. And, again, hit the like, hit the thumbs up. Let me show you this. I will show you this. This is the mayor. This is how we started it off.
crown you as the king of New Year's Eve.
All right. Turn the volume down. Thank you. It's a little early for that kind of music. But this was us in the street. We had a street fair. I got dunked in a dunk booth, a dunk tank. We raised money for Children's Hospital here in New Orleans. And it was just amazing the number of guests that we had. My friends from other networks, my celebrity friends turned out. I popped out of a cake for midnight on the East Coast and then on the then here in the central time zone we had the lemon drop and um the funniest moment of the night i have to say is when i did not realize that i was talking because they kept changing the microphone and handing me different microphones when we went into that there's the lemon isn't it amazing where the lemon drop what are the artists at the art market made that for us um uh like really on the scene so um
I didn't, they kept handing me mics and it was just so chaotic. It was a, it was a hot mess, but a hot mess in a good way, which is what New Year's Eve should be. And this one moment where I'm sitting on the bar, look at this street party. I mean, come on guys, come on. There's no place in this country, I believe, to celebrate New Year's Eve than New Orleans. It was great. We're going to do it every year and it's just going to grow. Okay. And so let's show them the mic upside down moment.
