Good morning, everybody. Welcome to the Don Lemon Show, our hot topic show that we do at 10 a.m. Eastern Time every single weekday, and sometimes on the weekends as well. We're so glad that you're here, and wait till you see our guest, someone that you guys have been asking for, someone who has been in the zeitgeist recently for all of the right things and fighting for... Due process and civil rights for people. So let me just tell you what's going on, and then I'll introduce our guest, okay? So we come on the air with two major developments in a story that you will remember. It happened earlier this month. We've been trying to get the mayor on. He has a very busy, busy schedule. This happened on May 9th.
Don Lemon 0:57
Newark Mayor and New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Roz Baraka was arrested on trespassing charges during a chaotic scene involving protesters, federal agents, members of Congress near an ICE detention facility. And so, breaking late yesterday, a federal judge dismissed Those charges scolded the federal prosecutors for their quote, unquote, embarrassing conduct. And then Judge Andre Espinoza excoriated Donald Trump's former personal lawyer. You may remember her and now interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey. And that is Alina Haba saying, and I quote here, your role is not to secure convictions at all costs, nor to satisfy public clamor, not to advance political agendas. Your office. must operate with a higher standard than that.
Don Lemon 1:49
But we have more news because while the charges against Mayor Baraka were dropped, we've now learned that Alina Haba has slapped New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver with a criminal assault charge for her role in the scuffle outside of the ICE facility. So, and what's more, late last night, Representative Nancy Mace, dear friend of this show, filed a, that was a joke, filed a resolution to expel McIver, I hope I'm pronouncing her name right, it's McIver McIver from Congress. This is what we would call fascism. This is what we would call going after your political opponents. I hate to say enemies because I don't believe these people are enemies. They just don't have the same beliefs that you do.
Don Lemon 2:29
They believe in the Constitution. Another way to spin it here. So joining me now, Newark Mayor Roz Baraka. Mayor, good morning. Thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate having you on the program.
Ras Baraka 2:40
Good morning. Thanks for having me.
Don Lemon 2:41
How are you doing?
Ras Baraka 2:43
good.
Don Lemon 2:43
You're good. So listen, first of all, let's talk about the charges being dropped. And then I also want to talk to you about some news of the day, but let's talk about the charges being dropped because that is news of the day as well. How do you feel about that?
Ras Baraka 2:58
It's good. I mean, it is the best resolution, obviously, for both people. I mean, the charges were baseless. And, you know, after they said they did an investigation. They realized that, and we came to an agreement to drop the charges.
Don Lemon 3:14
Yeah. How are you doing? Because it's been, I mean, for you, you know, being arrested, dealing with all this stuff, it's got to be, it can't be easy. I know that you're a public servant. You're used to being in the public, but are you used to being arrested and having to deal with this, stuff like this?
Ras Baraka 3:28
Not in a very long time, sir. So, I mean, this is, it was pretty bizarre and, you know, crazy, but, you know, it happened. Yeah. And, you know, people who say that Congresswoman or we went down there to be arrested is completely ridiculous.

What happened during Mayor Ras Baraka’s May 9th arrest outside the Newark ICE facility?

Ras Baraka 3:46
You know, this was not escalated by her or any other people that were there.
Don Lemon 3:50
Yeah. So listen, we talked about the charges being dropped. I just want to just so people can see what happened and we'll continue to discuss. This is the arrest video. I hope it's not triggering for you, but you're a big you're a grown man. You can deal with it, I'm sure. Here's an arrest video. And I want to I wanted to play for a little bit so folks can see it.
Rep. LaMonica McIver 4:09

.

Why were the charges against Mayor Baraka dismissed and what did the judge say?

.
Don Lemon 4:38
Mayor, when you look at that, what do you think?
Ras Baraka 4:57
That was not a pretty picture. No, it was completely uncalled for, actually, you know, and very unavoidable at the same time.
