What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

Eric Swalwell 0:13
Well, we've got a bunch of folks coming in right now.

What are the immediate political concerns Don outlines at the California Democratic Convention?

Eric Swalwell 0:17
We are on the eve of the California Democratic Convention weekend in San Francisco here in Northern California. About 3,000 plus delegates will convene and then thousands of others, a lot in the press. And top of mind, of course, is going to be the president putting troops in the streets ICE agents chasing our friends and neighbors through the fields and factories where they work. The president focusing entirely zero of his time on lowering costs, but adding a lot of wars to the maps. And California flexed a little bit just a couple months ago by adding five seats to take away or match what Texas had done with its rigged districting. But I think the best The person to talk to who's been in the fight and hopefully can fire up Californians because he's been unbreakable is Don Lyman.
Eric Swalwell 1:12
So, Don, I just wanted to have you on, talk to some of the convention goers as they're getting ready for this upcoming weekend of events and nominations. And just first, how are you doing, man?
Don Lemon 1:26
i'm doing great thank you first of all the congressman for having me on it's it's i always enjoy the opportunity to be able to speak to you and to speak to you know the people of america so thank you for having me on um i'm doing okay you know people ask and sometimes i say you know i don't know it's you know it's moment to moment um i feel that i'm gonna prevail considering i think you're asking me that considering my being detained in los angeles um you know there are moments when i'm okay and there are moments when i'm you know

How did Don Lemon describe his arrest and its impact on his work as a journalist?

Don Lemon 1:56
when I sit and think about it and it's like, you know, the, the, our government, the department of justice arrested me for doing my job. And then, you know, for that moment, when I think about it, I'm not okay.
Eric Swalwell 2:07
You know, Is it going to stop you in anything that you do next? No.
Don Lemon 2:13
no i mean look um these are very serious charges um and so i take them as such obviously i think i'm well represented legally but um no it's not going to stop me because i believe eric as you know very staunchly in the first amendment and i believe in the freedom of the press and everything that i have done um as it relates to you know professionally in my reporting has been underpinned by the the freedom of the press the the first amendment and what i did in minnesota same thing i went in as a journalist i went there to do work as a journalist i entered the the place where the protesters were protesting um to be a journalist to chronicle it and i went on about my business of doing journalism and and did it throughout the day and as i've been doing every day ever since and so no it's not going to stop me it's not going to silence me at all
Don Lemon 3:06
If anything, it sort of makes me recommit to being an even better journalist.
Eric Swalwell 3:13
I talked to some of my colleagues last week who have been targeted by the president, some of them who the president tried to indict, and the grand jury came back, said not just no, hell no, zero votes for it. But we were talking about when you're a target of the president and they threaten investigations, and I've got one, Adam Schiff has one, Tish James, Lisa Cook have this mortgage nonsense that they're throwing our way. Can you just tell... Our listeners, what it does to you just mentally when you're thinking about, like, is the FBI going to meet me outside my house? Like, well, am I going to lose my devices? What does this mean for my friends and family? Because it's something that unless you...
Eric Swalwell 4:01
thinking about it because it's a real threat you don't understand how it affects all the other shit you have to do to do a good job in your profession well I mean first of all the you know I think the easiest and the number one answer is that
Don Lemon 4:21
the fact that someone can take your freedom for doing your job, right. And just for doing what you know is right and not illegal.

What legal irregularities does Don claim happened with the grand jury and indictment process?

Don Lemon 4:29
So that's unnerving. But also, you know, as I said, when I was on Kimmel and as my attorney has pointed out that they started banding my name about, and, and he got in touch with the justice department saying, Hey, look, you know, if this is real, then why don't we do this the right way?
