What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

Don Lemon 0:12
The great Steve Schmidt is here. Steve, it's an honor to talk to you. I've long admired your work. And boy, I got to tell you, you've got some cojones on you. So congratulations. You're doing what the media should be doing right now without fear or favor. So thank you for that. Can we talk now, Ron, what the hell's going on?

Why did the U.S. strike Iran and what immediate context led to it?

Don Lemon 0:34
Why is this all happening now, Steve? I saw what you wrote. I think it was brilliant. Netanyahu, the war hawks in America have been saying Iran is on the cusp of nuclear weapons for years or a nuclear weapon for years. Why this sudden drastic action right now from the Trump administration?
Steve Schmidt 0:51
I think that you have to, when you evaluate this, have to look at this from the person's perspective that initiated what's happening. And that's not Donald Trump. That's Bibi Netanyahu. Right. And the reality of Bibi Netanyahu is he's a corrupt and dishonest prime minister who brought disaster to his country on October 7th. Israel, before October 7th, was riven by protests. The country was divided. The judiciary was under assault. And at that time of weakness, the nation was attacked. And Netanyahu, in essence, will remain as prime minister in Israel for as long as Israel is at war. And so this man's premiership ends the second The fighting in Gaza is over. And the fighting that has taken place regarding what Iran directed from Tehran, the access of evil.
Steve Schmidt 2:13
Hamas has been decimated. Hezbollah has been decimated. The leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had been decimated. The Israelis had operated with a free hand against Iran for quite some time. And then so Bibi Netanyahu announces the Iranians are on the cusp of achieving a nuclear weapon. And this is an issue, as you know, that there's broad consensus around Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George Bush. There's no disagreement within the mainstreams of American politics about the danger of this regime. how evil it is, how terrible it is that it's a state-sponsored terror, that they have their hands drenched in American blood, all of those things. But Netanyahu announces the Iranians are about to have this weapon and we must act.
Steve Schmidt 3:19
And so Netanyahu goes on international television after the Israeli attack and says, we have destroyed the Iranian program, which begets the question of, well, if that was so, why is it that Donald Trump within the month has to make an announcement that it is he who has destroyed the Iranian nuclear program after ordering an attack with 125 U.S. Air Force combat aircraft? And so Trump goes out And he says, we have destroyed the program. Keith Hegseth says Trump is the greatest leader since Napoleon and all of the other greatest generals put together since the beginning of time. And then we've obliterated the program. And the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says, not so fast. We have to check out what the damage assessment is.
Steve Schmidt 4:28
And so the bombs that we dropped, these massive ordnance penetrators, now suddenly all of these media war hawks on TV who can't tell the difference between a major and a lieutenant colonel, a sailor and a Marine, a soldier and a Coast Guardsman, are dropping the lingo about the penetrator. The American arsenal, apparently, we had 20 of them. We dropped 12 of them. with an indeterminate result. So Pete Hegseth comes out and he says, well, deterrence has been reestablished. Well, apparently not, because within the last hour, the Iranians have retaliated by targeting a U.S. base in Qatar.

Who pushed for military action—was it Trump or Netanyahu?

Steve Schmidt 5:24
And so Donald Trump was just in Qatar as one of the stops on his Middle Eastern corruption tour. So now we have the prospect of what is it exactly that Donald Trump is defending in Qatar? Is it Trump's interest? Is it America's interest? And so we at this hour, a country led by a most dishonest man who's been contradicted by himself, and his war cabinet dozens of times just since Saturday, who's divided the nation, deployed its Marine Corps against its people in Los Angeles, now says, trust me, we've had a great decisive military strike when he's the same guy who can't acknowledge that he lost an election in 2020.
