Why is the show opening with Don Lemon absent and what’s the announcement about his family?
Hello, Lemon Nation. How you doing, guys? I hope all of you are doing well. I know we're not the face you wanted to see, but we're going to be back with you tonight and maybe for the rest of the week. If we're being honest, probably for the week. I know a lot of you were probably on the morning show. But for those of you that were not, I would suggest you give it a watch. Don did join us. And just to reiterate the news, Don's sister sadly passed away. So he has been dealing with the family business and stuff. And I think it's going to be a little while until he's back, probably at least through the end of the week. But he's so happy to get all of your prayers and all of your thoughts. And I urge all of you to keep him in your thoughts.
Yeah. Just to echo what Nikki just said, I highly recommend you watch The Morning Show if you didn't catch it. He offers a lovely, loving tribute to his sister who died. Who certainly lived a wonderful life and was just a fantastic woman. So watch that. But not until after the show, because we've got plenty of things to talk about today. Mainly just Trump chaos. Trump chaos galore. Have you all heard the story of King Midas? The character who... touch something and it would immediately turn to gold. Trump is a is a King Midas type figure, certainly. But whatever. Certainly not gold. Certainly not gold. Leave it up to your imaginations what what those things turn into. Nikki, where would you like to start? Should we start with the illegal deportation?
Should we start with the cratering stock market? Should we start with I don't know, what should we start with? So many wonderful options. Let's see. Why don't we start with Powell from today so we can get an idea of where our economy stands right now.
If the large increases in tariffs that have been announced are sustained, they're likely to generate a rise in inflation, a slowdown in economic growth, and an increase in unemployment. The effects on inflation could be short-lived, reflecting a one-time shift in the price level. It is also possible that the inflationary effects could instead be more persistent. Avoiding that outcome will depend on the size of the tariff effects, on how long it takes for them to pass through fully into prices, and ultimately on keeping longer-term inflation expectations well anchored.
So for those of you who, like me, did not get an economic degree, but for those of you, unlike me, who didn't put a few hours into Googling what exactly... Chair Powell was saying there, we are dancing on the brink of stagflation of not just a recession, because, of course, a recession is really bad in and of itself. But stagflation is particularly dangerous because it's very, very hard to stop once it starts. We saw this is what really tanked Jimmy Carter's reelection chances back in the 80s because he was not able or the 70s, excuse me, was not able to get stagflation under control. Yes, Karen White, you're absolutely correct. Absolutely correct. Yes. And just for those who don't know, I believe stagflation is defined when there is rising unemployment, rising inflation and lowered economic growth.
Just exactly what we are seeing right now. And of course, you all know this. I'm not telling you anything you don't know. But the ridiculous nature of this whole crisis is because it's so self-inflicted. This did not need to happen. This will be a man-made recession. This will be a man-made stagflation crisis. And of course, we know it's one man who's made this all. And he has the power any moment to stop it, to say, you know, I'm pulling back on this ridiculous tariff regime. And yet he refuses to do so. Nikki, we have from earlier today, I believe it's Representative Valdez questioning Scott Besant about, you know, when the administration says that they have deals, when they say that we are about to make some major progress here.
Yeah.
I think Trump said at one point, what, they had 200 deals that they were about to announce. She questions Besson earlier today about what those deals are. Are there any specifics whatsoever, any type of evidence, any type of proof that Besson can provide to indicate that that's actually the case and we are not, again, hurtling towards economic collapse here?
