Who is Hakeem Jeffries and why is he on Lemon LIVE at 5?
Welcome everybody to Lemon Live at 5, 5 o'clock Eastern Time, and we're so glad that you're here. You can see right on our screen, we have the Minority Leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries. Leader Jeffries, thank you so much for joining. I appreciate it.
Great to be with you. Great to be back on... Lemon Nation and with each and every one of your incredible Lemonheads.
Well, I got you. Lemon Nation and the Lemonheads. I asked the former vice president, I said, are you a Lemonhead? She goes, I love you, Don, but I'm nobody's head. But I do love what you're doing, and I'm not surprised that you're having this success.
Well, Lemon Nation for me, that's what I call the Hakeem Jeffries Brooklyn remix.
Speaking of, I mean, look, we have seen the Brooklyn, New York guy come out, you know, just over the last couple of months. But really, in the last few days, you have been really holding the people to account who are in the Justice Department, the Trump administration about all of the shenanigans and. abuse that's going on in Minnesota. One thing you said is that this, I'm paraphrasing here, you believe that this administration is lawless when it comes to that, that they're not following due process. And you said they need to be unmasked. And that means physically unmasked, but also their actions as well.
That's exactly right. I mean, the administration is completely and totally out of control. And that's been on all the things we've seen an all out assault by the Trump administration on the economy, on health care, on law abiding immigrant families, on due process, on the rule of law and on journalists, as you've had experience. And we stand with you. Don, shoulder to shoulder, it's outrageous what the Department of Justice has been doing, targeting journalists in your instance, and of course targeting people who they perceive to be adversaries while coddling supporters of Donald Trump. I mean, they're running the largest pay-to-play scheme in the history of the country. The whole thing is outrageous.
But certainly as it relates to dealing with the Department of Homeland Security, we've been very clear that no appropriation should move forward until we can get ICE and DHS under control as it relates to how they are utilizing taxpayer dollars, which should not be used to brutalize everyday Americans, kill American citizens, or violently target law-abiding immigrant families.
You mentioned that, let's talk about the Department of Homeland Security, because they have sent Tom Holman in place to replace, I should say, Greg Bovino and Kristi Noem, it looks like. Do you think that that's a change? He says he wants to have the agents be accountable and et cetera, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Yeah, I think that's exactly right. A change in personnel does not mean a change in approach and a change in policy. And we need a dramatic change at the Department of Homeland Security. And so we've laid that out. There should be no aggressive behavior like storming homes or breaking windows, ripping people out of their cars in the absence of a judicial warrant. There should be an explicit prohibition on the arrest, on the detention, and on the deportation by DHS of American citizens. No masks should be worn. We need DHS and ICE to conduct themselves like every other law enforcement agency in the country. There needs to be an excessive use of force policy that makes sure that these agents are behaving in a lawful fashion and on the
By the same token, if they violate the law, they should be held accountable for their actions and subject to investigation and possible criminal prosecution by state and local authorities.
Do you think that they will be held accountable? Because from what I've seen, a lot of their actions to me. uh seem to be unlawful and but there's no investigation there's no investigation into mr renee nicole good's death there's no investigation into as far as i know into alex preddy's death it seems like they are they can do these things with impunity including killing people at some point though there will be a change in the administration do you think that these rogue if you want to call them agents you can we call them um goons here on this show do you think that they ever will be held accountable
