In a world where organizations are increasingly focused on engagement, culture, and performance, understanding what motivates people has never been more important. Today we'll explore the power of knowing your why, how purpose influences leadership and engagement, and how understanding your personal operating system can help you lead with greater clarity, authenticity, and impact. Welcome to the Forward Thinking Podcast. I'm your host, Stephanie Barton, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for FCCS. Today's guest with us is Dr. Gary Sanchez, internationally known as Dr. Y. Gary is a speaker, an author, a dentist, which that's a first for the podcast, inventor and founder of the Y Institute, and he'll also be speaking at the upcoming RISC 360 conference.
Stephanie Barton 1:17
So welcome to the podcast.
Dr. Y. Gary 1:18
Awesome, Stephanie. Thanks for having me here. Yes, I'm your first dentist.
Stephanie Barton 1:23
Yes, absolutely. And I'm I've gotta say I'm I'm glad we're on the podcast and I'm not in your chair.
Dr. Y. Gary 1:29
So shall we start by talking about teeth? Got any dental questions while I'm here? Maybe down the road. I don't know. And if you here's my question though. I don't even know the answer to this. So I have I uh haven't practiced dentistry in about six years. So does that still make me a dentist? Or am I uh uh or I was I a dentist? I don't know how that works. I think you're a recovering dentist. Recovering, okay. Which which leads to, you know, the the I I didn't ever set out to develop software to help people figure out their why. Right. It wasn't a lifelong dream to wake up and say, hey, you know, I think I'm gonna create software to help people figure out who they are. This w all came about as I was looking for it for myself.
Dr. Y. Gary 2:17
And um once I figured out how to discover my own why, I started doing it for other people, anybody that would let me for years. I just did it for free. It was a hobby. Uh if you were sitting in my t chair, Stephanie, uh you were gonna get your why discovered. If you were sitting next to me on an airplane, you were gonna get your Y discovered. And uh i I did it for so many thousands of people for free. That I started to notice patterns and trends and similarities. And then I figured out there's only nine different whys. And then based on that, I could teach other people to do what I was doing. And then I could get more data. And with that data, then in 2016, I developed the why discovery that just found your why.
Dr. Y. Gary 3:03
And then the one that you just recently took that finds your why, how, and what, and builds your message for you called the YOS or Y. operating system.
Stephanie Barton 3:13
Well, I love call I love thinking about it like that because it is our internal operating system. So it is it is who we are. It's it's kind of innate. Um so tell me a little bit more about that, that language that you use to describe it.
Dr. Y. Gary 3:26
Yeah. So think back to do you remember the commercials that came out maybe fifteen or maybe even longer years ago where I'm a Mac, I'm a PC? Mm-hmm. Right. Were you a Mac or were you a PC? I was a PC, but I'm now a Mac. Okay, yes. Me too. Me too. I well, I think I was a Mac, then a PC, then now I'm back to being a Mac. But um the purpose of those commercials, and they were great, was to highlight the differences between a Mac and a PC, right? So for those of you that aren't familiar with it, i if the one guy would come out and say, I'm a PC, and he was dressed kind of nerdy, kind of business-y, and then you'd have the kind of cool guy in the t-shirt and jeans come out and say, I'm a Mac and you know, one is all about business and one is all about creativity.
Dr. Y. Gary 4:10
And so they highlighted the differences between a Mac and a PC, and they were very successful for Apple.
