You know, I did the interview with the Monsignor who's in charge of the process of his canonization, really the cause for his canonization. It was fascinating to hear so many things about Archbishop Sheen and some of these things that I owe a lot to him. There's four people that I wish I could meet in person and just thank them. He is one of the four. It came up in the interview with the Monsignor But for someone's cause to be advanced, the process of canonization, they can't just be a decent person. They can't just be a good person. They can't just even be a really good person. What you have to have evidence for is heroic virtue. So I'm disqualified in that sense of like we're all, many of us may be disqualified.
How does the Church define “heroic virtue” for canonization?
If there's heroic virtue, it is buried deeply, deeply. But Archbishop Poulton Sheen, there's evidence of heroic, not just ordinary, but heroic virtue in his life. And I go back, there was a book he wrote. I think it's called Treasures in Clay. It's his partial autobiography of his life. And there was a story that he recounted that I just thought, and he said it in such a matter of fact, recounted it in such a matter of fact way, but it was so striking to me. There was something along the lines like this. I think he was already an archbishop and he was driving to a thing, whatever the thing was. And he saw some children that looked like they were in distress. And so he stopped to ask what they needed. And what they needed was there was someone, again, I'm gonna get these details wrong because the idea remains deeply in me, but even if the specifics aren't, someone they loved or someone they were related to was in distress, whether they're physically ill, dying, need.
And so he said, okay, take me to them. These kids led him to, I think it was the bedside of this person. He prayed with them, probably anointed them. Again, I got the details wrong, but the idea I have. So the idea is this. Wow, I have driven many times and seen people on the side of the road and I've never stopped to say, hey, how can I help? Not never, not never, I'll say that. Rarely have I stopped to say, how can I help? I've got a timeframe.

Like they're expecting me at this hour. Here are some people that I don't know who may or may not be in distress. Let me stop to see what I can do. And there's something in that that I think, oh my goodness, Lord. Thank you for that example. How often? Even if I have a bunch of things to do. Maybe even if I have nothing else to do. Well, I see someone who might be in need and just ask the question, hi, is there anything I can do to help you in your need? But Archbishop Fulton Sheen did that. So one is evidence of his heroic virtue. Another is really evidence of his prayer. You might know this as one of the more famous things about Archbishop Sheen is that he had dedicated himself to making a holy hour every day of his priesthood.
And so he would find himself in the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle one way or another, whether that was in the middle of the night because he hadn't been able to do it yet, early in the morning before he left for a thing, or in the middle of the day. And he traveled so much that sometimes it was a big effort. In fact, there's a kind of famous story about him having to break into a church. Was it through the coal chute or something like this in order to get inside or maybe to break out of it because they locked him in. And it was one of those situations that, okay, I also have a dedication to make a holy hour every day. But I'll tell you this. Again, this is the difference between the saint or the soon to be beatified Fulton Sheen and someone like me.
