The original, as Philip Marlowe returned, it was off the air for more than nine months. During this time, Gerald Moore continued to act, including spending a month playing Archie Goodwin on Nero Wolfe. But the reason for this... And this is the first of four seasons that CBS would bring back a previously canceled radio program. And it does make a lot of sense to do that.
With radio revenues declining, it makes sense to go with a show as a summer replacement rather than picking something which may or may not work. You choose something with a built-in audience. And these detective shows certainly had a reputation. And 1951 saw Philip Marlowe. In the summer of 1952, they brought back Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. In the summer of 1953, even though they never aired Richard Diamond, one of the first examples of reruns, and then in the summer of 1954, they brought back Broadway is My Beat. So it's time to get into the summer 1951 run of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, the original air date, July the 7th of 1951, and the title is A Seaside Sabbatical.
