Chapter 2: Did the Jets make the most of their draft picks?
Twitter was making a lot of fun of him. But I think most people making fun of him, if you put yourself in that spot, you're the GM of the Giants, which historically is one of the greatest jobs in all sports. Google some of the guys they've had in those roles. And I just think you don't want to lose it. I think you're a little terrified, even if you think things are going good.
Sunday morning is, am I going to get a call that my iPad and key card no longer work? So I've been there, Joe. And I don't blame him for wanting to hold on. But, you know, the night kind of got started with a bang. Kyle Shanahan, he is just adamant. Like, this is a philosophical belief.
that guys that score touchdowns, guys that make plays on offense, are more important in terms of draft capital and drafting high, if all things are equal, than offensive linemen. Most people I know in the NFL don't necessarily agree, but that is a core belief of Kyle Shanahan when it comes to football.
And he drafted years ago Debo really high in the second round after he coached him in the Senior Bowl. Drafted Brandon Ayuk in the first round when a lot of Packer fans thought that Green Bay was going to pick him. And obviously a couple picks later they take Jordan Love. He took Ricky Pearsall a couple years ago in the first round. He took Stribling today from Ole Miss here. Essentially pick 33.
It might as well be a first round pick. It was essentially the Niners first round pick because they traded back to get the first pick of the second round. And listen, do you know what's funny about looking at some of these guys' bios? Is the amount of guys... I was just... I played golf the other day with a guy named Nick Fazekas.
He's one of the great kind of mid-major basketball players of all time. He's the all-time leading scorer at Nevada. Played in Japan forever. He was drafted, I think, by the Clippers in the beginning of the second round. He lives here in Scottsdale. And we were just... We were just talking football and the transfer portal. I'm like, God, you missed your window.
He's like, shit, I would have been at Carolina by my sophomore year. I'm like, yeah, business would have been good. But now you look up, people have always, not always, but it used to be more difficult because you'd have to sit out a year. Now with the free-for-all, I look up Stripling's career.
It's like, started at Washington State, then he went to Oklahoma State, and then he ended up with Lane Kiffin. And it's just, it's pretty crazy how it goes down. But we were talking, he's like, do you kind of judge guys for transferring? Because back in the day, 20, 15, 10 years ago, before the transfer portal, it used to be a red flag. Now I'm like, you know, it's not a red flag at all.
It's just, it's kind of normal. Honestly, I was telling Colin last night when Miami drafted the San Diego statewide receiver, or cornerback, who had an excellent season, somewhat of a one-year wonder. I immediately text a couple guys. I'm like, why didn't he transfer? If you're a smaller school guy, my first question is, why are you still at the smaller school? I want you to level up.

Chapter 3: How are the Eagles improving their team through trades?
You play for one of the more explosive offenses in the country. I'm sure Lane is singing your praises, and he was just an excellent player for him. He's a good kid. His dad was a wrestler. He's from Hawaii. He's a little bit of a raw product, but the one thing the 49ers just do not have is just someone to stretch the field. Really, their stretch the field guy has been George Kittle.
That's not really Mike Evans' thing anymore. McCaffrey's kind of slow relative to ā he's not quite as explosive as he was several years ago. Juwan Jennings, that was never his style. He's just gone. So I think that they just really believe in wide receivers.
You know, I personally, one draft that I have a lot of respect for, and I would just say roster man for man, if you remove the quarterback, I think you could put the Texans right there with anybody. I mean, last night they take this mauling guard from Georgia Tech who was just an old school badass. I watch, I love a good phone call. Like, I love a good GM on the phone, like, You're our type guy.
The toughness, the grit, what you stand for, the soul. You're everything we want in this building. And the guy's like, yes. They always call the GM coach like, yes, coach. Yes, coach. We're so fired up. And it just kind of gets you juicy. There's just something raw and real. This is just genuine.
For this multi-billion dollar business, now with college football, with NIL, I think I mentioned this last night. There's something about this event that just really makes you feel good. The moment with the Terrell brothers, it's just kind of cool. I mean, I don't really know what else to say besides there's nothing else quite like this. And part of it is the NFL draft's so much longer.
All these guys are coming from bigger schools, or a majority of them are. And I just think the Texans, if you remove the quarterback... I don't see ā I mean, they might be closer to one than they are five in terms of roster. And one thing I'm going to stand by saying is I think if CJ can take more of kind of an outlook, and I think it's difficult because ā He just saw Will get paid.
He's seen all these guys in the league make a lot of money. CJ was the number two pick in the draft. He's a multi-millionaire. He's going to get paid no matter what. It's just relative. Is he going to have a season where he throws 40 touchdowns? They're the number one seed. He could get some insane contract. But honestly, if he just threw 28 touchdowns and 7 picks and they won 13 or 14 games...
I don't think the contract will be that much different. And I think the key is going to be, because he's a more talented player than Alex Smith or Ryan Tannehill, but what Alex was the Chiefs and what Ryan Tannehill did for Rossini's boyfriend in Tennessee, if he can just play under kind of those parameters and then every once in a while make a better play because he's more gifted,
But let's face it, be more of a game manager. I think the Texans could win the Super Bowl. Shanahan said this at the Super Bowl. He's like, yeah, I thought there were two teams this year that we played that if their quarterbacks just didn't screw it up, could win it all with special teams and defense. And that was Seattle and Houston. I was like, totally agree. And I'm a CJ fan. Story's awesome.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Howie Roseman's aggressive strategy?
There's got to be just something raw and real about when you go to these Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, and you see one of your, you know, kind of your elder brother's One of your elder, I mean, essentially mentors. I mean, he's played the same position. You see Cam standing next to him. He's a little bit bigger. I don't know how tall Caden is. Yeah, he's 6'2".
So I was like, no wonder Cam's got it by a couple inches. But they just got some beef, man. I mean, they got some physicality right there. We talk a lot of football on this show, but the NBA playoffs are here. And here's the thing.

Chapter 5: Which players stood out in the second round of the draft?

There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that. Trust your girlfriends. I'm Anna Sinfield. And in this new season of The Girlfriends. Oh my God, this is the same man.
A group of women discover they've all dated the same prolific con artist. I felt like I got hit by a truck. I thought, how could this happen to me? The cops didn't seem to care, so they take matters into their own hands. I said, oh, hell no. I vowed I will be his last target. He's going to get what he deserves.

Clemson, one thing I wrote down is TJ Parker, the Bills took him with the third pick in the second round. You had several guys go yesterday from Clemson. You had multiple guys tonight, TJ Parker and then the corner who went to Atlanta to play with his brother, AJ. There can't be many teams in college football history that underachieved more with their talent.
I do kind of comprehend watching these draft picks, but Because these guys, I mean, especially the defensive linemen, played terrible. Obviously, the quarterback play was terrible. But the actual physical talent on the field was elite. I mean, I don't want to say it's Ohio State or Miami, but it wasn't that it was much closer to them. Like, they were a more talented roster.
Now, their quarterback play was... Klubnik was bad relative to Mendoza. But I don't see the difference, especially when you're talking defensive linemen. So, I mean, this is... This notion that Dabo, you know, the transfer portal and isn't recruiting, I think the problem is clearly the coaching. Because the physical characteristics and the talent is there.
They're getting all these guys going in the top 40. Where on the flip side, you look at Texas Tech... You have Bailey go one, you have Rodriguez go 43, and you had Lee Hunter, the defensive tackle, who probably should have gone higher, but he did a vertical jump that went like 10 inches, so he fell in the draft a little bit. He's a lot like Cade McDonald.
You watch some of his highlight tapes, because you watch Texas Tech tonight, or I mean this year, and defensively, I tweeted this out, if Mike Leach... ever had the defensive talent that Tech had this year because of NIL with some of his offenses, they could have won the national championship. I feel pretty confident saying that.

Chapter 6: What are the key differences between salary cap and cash spending in the NFL?
And he swears by them. So it's like, okay, I'm resold. I'm back in on the Oklahoma Sooners next year. But their defense was awesome. I mean, they were, you could argue, as good of a defense as any by metrics. I mean, at one point in time, I think they were the best defense in the SEC.
But just on the eye test in terms of three levels of physicality, speed, tackling, the Chiefs getting Mason, our Mason Thomas, at pick 40. I mean, so you get... Last night, you get a star corner. I mean, he's got a chance to be a shutdown Pro Bowl-level corner. You get a defensive lineman for Clemson that I think you pull the trigger on that.
You're basically just blaming the Clemson coaches for screwing it up. and obviously you're going to have to stay on his ass to play harder. I think that was a big issue with all these guys, the Clemson defensive line. This was not like the Cleland Farrell, Christian Wilkins group. Christian Wilkins obviously is the butt of many people's jokes. The guy was a baller in college.
I mean, that defensive line that the national championship teams had were legit, and that's what this group was supposed to be. It was like, you know... And it just didn't live up to the hype. Parker, Woods, their DBs, and it didn't happen. But Oklahoma's did. And R. Mason Thomas, to me, like you couldn't watch Oklahoma play. And he stood out.
Edge rusher to go with Karloftis, to go with now their couple defensive linemen. You get a legit DB. I think they go, hey. We do offense. We bring in Kenneth Walker. We're going to run the ball more this year. I've been saying it over and over. I truly believe that he's going to try to be more intentional about the ground game.
I think they're going to emphasize that this year to make it easier on Patrick. And they also got Justin Fields, who they can bring in packages and run him around as well. And then if you watch Texas A&M, This guy, he had that classic mid-90s, the pads ended at his third ab, and he was a complete badass.
And I get it, he has arms like the size of a 12-inch ruler, and no one like him and Reuben Bain, small arms, terrify people at defensive line. But when you watch Cassius Howell play for Texas A&M, he wrecked fucking shop. So people, you know, the Steelers, who I'm going to get to on Sunday, that is, I kind of feel for McCarthy.
The Ravens still got a lot of question marks, got a lot of new faces, new coaching staff. I do think the Bengals got a chance to be pretty good. You bring in Dexter Lawrence, you assign Mafe, you got Shamar Stewart, which, listen, if he can just be a backup and just say, hey, 25, 30 plays, just run hard. And same with this guy. I mean, I do think they got some reinforcements up front.
We know how good and talented the quarterback and the two receivers are. I'm pretty confident. The Bengals are 100%, as sitting here right now, my pick to win that division. Zion Young was a guy kind of discussed about the first round. The Ravens definitely need some edge pressure. Same with... The Lions going back-to-back here, Derek Moore and Zion Young to the Lions and the Ravens.

Chapter 7: How does the draft impact team dynamics and player performance?
It felt like Les Snead was like, I love this guy, I want him now. And maybe you could convince me, you know, I think right before we hopped on, Carson Beck went pick 65. So it's fair to say that the Cardinals would have taken Ty Simpson. At pick 34, I don't think the Rams weren't picking until 61, so I think they would argue we just never would have got him.
I would have been like, that's part of the way the draft works. But Carson Becks, I heard Albert Brewer say this, and it makes a lot of sense. In bad quarterback drafts, when only one or two guys go in the first round, typically you're not going to see many guys go in the second or third round. Because in a bad quarterback draft, it inflates people. Like this year.
Dante Moore, and there's just not another crop of guys. That Ty Simpson is able to work his way up. He's clearly the second best quarterback. And I don't even disagree with that. I understand. I would rather have... I probably wouldn't want any of these guys. But Ty Simpson, I get the argument. Carson Beck, Drew Al, or whatever. You go Diego Pavia, who's not going to get drafted.
But you know what I mean. In bad quarterback drafts, you're not going to see many guys go in the second or third round. Because if you take a guy in the second round, typically you believe the guy can be your starter. You're not taking a backup quarterback in the second round. Like one year, a couple guys went, it was like Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, you know, historically like Hackenberg.
Now, I'm not saying not all these guys work out, but your mindset is this guy can be a starting quarterback. Because if you just want a backup, you just wait until like the fourth or fifth round. And then you take, it's why last year the Riley Leonard, the Will Howard, like those guys were viewed as backups. You wouldn't waste a second or third round pick on that guy.
And, you know, Carson Beck, he's kind of right on the fringe. That shittier draft, so it's definitely inflated. You know, I would say most drafts you take a guy at 65. It's like, you know, just let him kind of come in and compete. I don't know if Carson Beck could beat out Jacoby Brissett. I definitely think he could beat out Gardner Minshew right now, though.
Any other picks at the end of the first round that I liked? Once you get to the third round, you kind of start losing me a little bit. It gets a little random. It's kind of flying tonight. Drew Aller. Drew Aller went to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Me and my guy, Producer Shane here, we were talking before we hopped on. He lives in New York. He went to Syracuse. He's been in bad weather.
When I lived those couple years in downtown Philadelphia... I've been to Pittsburgh or Boston or Washington or Baltimore or Cleveland or Cincinnati. These games, once you get to know ā remember the Chiefs playoff game against Tua a couple years ago? on Peacock, you have to have a strong arm. You can't have a weak arm and play in these areas. Like Brock Purdy can thrive with the 49ers.
If you put Brock Purdy on the New York Jets, even if Kyle Shanahan was his quarterback, it would not go as well. There's a reason why when you look at the best quarterbacks over the last several decades, most of them in the cold weather cities have had big arms. I would say Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson are somewhat outliers.
