Well, Mitchell Schwartz played for nearly a decade in the NFL at a very high High level, a four-time all pro. Um, we've been talking today about week one, maybe week two of the NFL. Atletic quarterbacks have an advantage because Building chemistry in an O line is hard. It's skill, it's work, it's timing, it's just it's just putting the time in. Well, offensive linemen, especially the good ones and the older ones, coaches aren't playing them in the preseason.

So you like yesterday, if you go back to last Thursday, Matt Stafford, Jared Goff, Aaron Rodgers, Cooper Rush Rush, if you don't have a highly athletic quarterback, it can get really ugly. And stagnant for an offense. So I want to talk about that brooch it with Mitchell Schwartz, who is now joining us live. The Chiefs tonight are hosting uh Denver. All right, so let let's let's talk about that. Go back to your career. Now, when you played in your career, guys actually occasionally played in the preseason. Now it's like uh, I mean, there's like caution tape around it. Nobody, they don't let any of you guys who are good, any bigs who are good play. So is is there something to athletic quarterbacks? Baltimore look good, Buffalo look good, Chicago look good.
Colin Cowherd 2:09
Hell, Carolina looked good actually, despite losing. Brock Purdy and the Niners look good. Is there anything to this, Mitchell?
Mitchell Schwartz 2:16
I think there is something to it. And I think the extra layer is how good defenses are now at disguising things. And, you know, we talked about the two high shell and all that stuff. But just in terms of like figuring out where protections are coming from, we saw Drake May, as athletic as he is, kind of running for his life against Seattle. They hit a lot of blitzes. And so that's just like almost a requirement for the position now. It's getting so difficult to, as you said, like have an offensive line that can hold up. Because I mean, you used to go, this is way before my day. So this isn't me talking about uh how tough we had it, but like back in the actual day, you started after training camp. You had four straight weeks, two a day's pads the whole time.
Mitchell Schwartz 2:53
Like that is so many more reps than guys are getting right now. You played all four preseason games. You know, my offensive line coach in uh Kansas City, Andy Heck, he was a first rounder, it was late 80s, early 90s. He said he played every single snap for four straight preseasons as a first rounder. Like that is unheard of. Guys won't even have a career's worth of, you know, uh snaps in the preseason now. So having that quarterback that can, you know, escape linemen who aren't ready to block or escape these tricky looks that we're facing, um, you're definitely seeing the advantage on the field.

All right, listen, if you look at the last two years, when when Mahomes comes in into this league, he's got Fisher at one tackle, you're at the other. And boy, that is driving to Mercedes right downtown.

How do offensive linemen’s preseason experiences affect their play this season?

Colin Cowherd 3:35
Just so nice. It's so comfortable. And then as the odd now they have to move off of Joe Tooney, and then you you retire, and all of a sudden, uh Fisher's gone. Well, in the last couple years, Patrick's
