Welcome in What's Right in the Grid episode 449. This episode of What's Right in the Grid is brought to you by our friends at Boost Mobile. It is draft day, Demanze. Right now I'm putting you on the spot. You're Baltimore Ravens. You don't have to say a player, but the position you most want them to address in this draft is, I'm going to give you the options, offensive line help,
Pass catcher, pass rusher. I think those are the three buckets that you could see them going with the 14th pick. O-line. Listen, I think, right, and he wasn't very good, but yes, I think the... I also maybe could see Kenyon Sadiq, the tight end out of Oregon, because they also lost Isaiah Likely. But they still do have Mark Andrews. But I think the most popular mock draft pick is...
vega the interior offensive lineman to uh to baltimore at 14 and so out of penn state the first interior alignment off the board so i think that is other well the most popular mock draft pick is fernando mendoza number one overall to the raiders but the next one would be that and so all right so here's the deal We got a bunch of great mailbag questions. We'll take more today.
However, we will be doing that mailbag next week instead of tomorrow because this morning I was thinking, I was like, you know what's pretty dumb?
have a podcast drop friday morning that has zero draft commentary in it so instead so instead of doing the mailbag tomorrow we are going to do that next week and tomorrow i will do a live first round draft reaction show so that's another reason for you guys to let to subscribe to the show it's not really a reason for you to like or rate the show that just makes us feel good but it's a reason for you to subscribe to the show so when that drops you will have it
Before we get to our draft thoughts and our favorite annual game where I prove to the world that I could run an NFL team, in fact, multiple NFL teams where Demanze works the phones, we are going to talk some NBA and the playoffs that have happened since we last... chatted, including the Lakers' huge win on Tuesday night. But first, straight to voicemail, brought to you by Boost Mobile.

Chapter 3: What pressure do NBA teams face heading into Game 3 of the playoffs?
Mike Tomlin's going to NBC, and the Royals are moving to Crown Center, which I think is going to be awesome. It's not quite downtown, but it's close to downtown. It'll be great for Kansas City. Again, reminder, everybody, subscribe to the show, YouTube, iTunes, Spotify. It helps us out.
All right, DeMonte, before we get to the draft, let's get to the Lakers, which will be some basketball commentary, some media criticism. Go ahead.
So, yeah, who would have saw this coming? The state of the Lakers right now? It seemed like you didn't even believe in that. We were talking about, like, what if they could just win a game? They could just get a game, look and come back. They're up 2-0 right now. How did you of all people not see this coming?
Yeah, I mean, I saw it. They would split the first two. What I said was, assuming Luka didn't come back, I thought the way the series would go was they would split the first two in LA, lose the games three and four in Houston, win game five in LA, and then Houston puts them away in Houston in game six.
Now, KD missing game one changed that, and the other thing that changed that is the Rockets reverting back to who they had been through big sections of the season, a team that is totally disconnected, doesn't seem to like each other that much, and whose all-time legendary top 20, all-time great player, Kevin Durant, can't seemed to handle a blitz or a double team to save his life.
All of that combined with LeBron James playing the marionette strings, as well as any player we've ever seen as far as running an offense, even on nights he didn't have it, which Tuesday night he didn't have it, has led to the Lakers not only being up 2-0, but controlling this series for basically every second it's been played.
The Lakers have been living up five to nine points throughout this series with those five to nine point leads feeling more secure than 15 point leads in the modern NBA because LeBron is doing old school LeBron controlling every single possession. And that's where there should be some real
accountability within the media and sorry to start here but for all the absolutely atrocious LeBron James takes that were just they weren't even hot takes they were just the accepted conventional wisdom throughout the course of this year going into the season LeBron's contract sure is an albatross for the Lakers.
Even though if he had taken the league minimum, it wouldn't have opened up hardly any cap space. But set that cap part aside, it was just like, no, he's just, you know, he's not worth. He's not a max level player anymore. If anybody out here said, no, LeBron's worth the max, they would be laughed. They would have been laughed at. Now the games matters.

Chapter 4: What are Nick's predictions for the NFL Draft?
It looked like he's worth the max. All year long, the conventional wisdom. Listen, LeBron's still good, but at 41 and as older than the other old guys, Steph, Durant, Kawhi, those guys are still top 10 players in the league. All NBA caliber players, which by the way, Steph and Kawhi were. LeBron's in a different place in his career. What are those guys doing right now?
Steph's having the time of his life at Coachella after playing poorly in a play-in game. Kawhi is doing whatever he's doing after being locked up in a play-in game. Kevin Durant is... I don't know. Struggling to find ways just to get shots up against...
a not great Lakers defense, while LeBron is giving you 24, 8, and 10 and setting up Luke Kennard and Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura and DeAndre Ayton for the exact shots on the exact spots on the court they want to be. Another take that was just taken as gospel.
If LeBron decides to keep playing, the Lakers probably should want to move off him and any team that signs him to anything more than the mid-level isn't serious about winning championships. Everybody was saying that. You were a fanboy if you pushed back against it. And now we're to April and you can't list 10 guys you'd rather have running your team.
And in that game too, when Kevin Durant was back and Kevin Durant scored 20 points in the first half, And it once again followed the exact same script as Game 1. The Lakers control the first half. Then almost to the exact same time. It was crazy how it happened. LeBron goes to the bench late in the second quarter. The Lakers turn the ball over. Four consecutive possessions.
The Rockets claw back in. Now we're going to be in a dogfight. The exact beats of Game 1. Game two follows the same script. And then in the start of the second half in game two, on the Lakers' first seven half-court possessions, one of them Jabari Smith Jr.

Chapter 5: Which positions should teams prioritize in the NFL Draft?
got matched up on LeBron and LeBron did what he's done every single time Jabari Smith Jr. has been on him. He took him to the post and posted up on him and drew a foul or got a layup. But the other six possessions, KD was guarding LeBron. And six half-court possessions in a row.
LeBron spreads the court, calls up DeAndre Ayton, gets Shingun involved in the action, and those six half-court possessions led to back-to-back DeAndre Ayton missed paint shots, then a DeAndre Ayton layup, then a DeAndre Ayton dunk, then when the Rockets tried to adjust,
LeBron didn't take the screen, a LeBron dunk, and then when the Rockets tried to adjust again and end up blitzing the pick and roll, LeBron ends up initiating the action to Marcus Smart, to Rui Achimura for an open three. Rockets have to take Shingun out of the game. And KD got frustrated, Shingun got taken out of the game, and the Lakers never looked back.
And now they are in the firmest of control of a series that every single person covering this series, myself included, said of the six best players, the Rockets have five of them. Unfortunately, the one they didn't have is 41-year-old LeBron James, who somehow still
At this point in his career, 20 playoff runs in, if he's healthy, can control the pace and the script of a playoff game unlike almost anyone in the league. And he's doing it. He has more post-ups this postseason than any other team. He has 16 post-ups. I don't know about any other team. The Knicks have 15.
I know there's at least five teams that have fewer post-ups than LeBron as a team this postseason. He's doing it differently. But what I do know is with all that said, it is on the board to Monza that Monday morning it's 2-2. Like, I want to make this clear. The Rockets are nine and a half point game three favorites. And then game four is on Sunday. So you don't get the extra day of rest.
So the Rockets should win those two games and it becomes a best of three. So while the moment Durant was ruled out of game one, I bet the Lakers to win the series. The moment the Lakers... I was on TV after game one. I said, switching my pick, I think the Lakers will win the series. And now they won game two. LeBron's 24-0 in his career, went up 2-0 in a series.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of Wemby missing games for the Spurs?
32-0 in his career, went up two games at any point in a series. I believe the Lakers are going to win and they're in great shape. I... I don't think this thing is, you know, a wrap, it's over, because the Lakers are getting, like, I don't think Kennard and Smart will be as good on the road. And as the series wears on, LeBron's age could show up.
However, what has been so frustrating to me, and I'll get to the Rockets' side of it, about yesterday's discussion of the game was going into the series it was the idea of lebron pulling this off was far-fetched the rockets were minus 800 favorites people were correctly discussing it in the terms of if he were to do this where does it rank
in all-time career accomplishments, and the moment it looked like he might actually do it, the conversation shifted to, what the hell's wrong with Houston? How are they letting this happen? And rather than recognizing, yeah, they have been accomplices in the potential murder of their season, but they're just the getaway car driver. The guy holding the knife is LeBron.
And... This would be one of, by Vegas odds, the biggest upsets in the history of round one of the playoffs. And at this point, the Lakers are now favored in the series. And... I'm just... I feel very, very fortunate... that I have been able to watch every step of the way of what is on Chris Mannix wrote. I haven't read the column yet, but I saw the headline on it.
A column that I believe is of this gist. If folks want to argue about who the greatest player was, feel free. But what you can't argue about is who's had the greatest career.
A win is a win.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Lil' Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people? I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Lil' Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back At It podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Chapter 8: What are the bold predictions for the upcoming NFL Draft?
And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you're here on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free iHeartRadio app, search Learn the Hard Way, and listen now.
And I feel so incredibly fortunate to be able to have documented and watched every step of this career that started 23 years ago. And on that note, real quick, I was thinking about this the other day. Here are, DeMondsey, the Hall of Famers drafted when LeBron was drafted in that era, so to speak, right? So LeBron was the 0-3 draft. The Hall of Famers from the draft one year before LeBron, okay?
Yeah.
Yao Ming, who I don't ā you're a 27-year-old father.
I've never seen him.
I was going to say, Yao Ming was drafted one year before LeBron.
That's crazy. Yao Ming, that one's a special because he's one of the huge guys, so his career was a little short. But, yeah, I've never seen Yao Ming play a basketball game.
Correct. That's what I was going to say. Yao Ming retired in 2011. Yeah. Yao Ming was drafted one year before LeBron. Retired before LeBron. He retired when LeBron went to Miami. Amari Stoudemire was drafted one year before LeBron. He made the Hall of Fame this year. LeBron's famous draft class, Carmelo, he's on the broadcasts. Dwyane Wade, he's on the broadcasts.
