I'm Dave Hanratty, and today on the IndoDaily, I'm joined by sports and entertainment journalist Andy McCarroll to look at a much-criticised return to the ring. Andy McCarroll, Conor McGregor is back in the news for all kinds of reasons, and a big reason is that he has a massive fight this weekend, a main event, no less, in the UFC. Now, it has been quite a while since we've seen him in that context. I feel like this has been in the offering for quite some time. There's been lots of will-they-won't-they's, but we are in fact here. How did we get here?
So, obviously, after the horrific leg break he suffered in his last fight in 2021, there's been a lot of rumors of comebacks, and... I think with all the controversy that's gone on outside the ring, I think this is the one thing he can control and the one thing he feels he can make a difference on. This is the thing. If I have a fight scheduled, I can be disciplined. I have a goal to aim for. I think a lot of what's gone on with him previously has said is because he has been aimless. I think he needs this as much as anything for his own sanity. And I feel like this is something that the narrative around him he thinks can change from a sporting reason specifically, as opposed to something outside the cage.
So I think all of that improvement, it's something for him to focus on and something for him to change the narrative around him for the past couple of years.
Yeah, he is, of course, up against Max Holloway. So that's going to be a tough one. We'll come back to the fight itself later on. But let's look at the kind of the build up to the fight. I mean, he's been kind of speaking on talk shows. He's been doing the rounds. He's speaking at a press conference there in the recent hours. The tide has turned for many reasons against McGregor. We are speaking sometime now after, of course, he was found liable in a civil court for the rape of Nikita Hand. I understand that in that press conference, Nikita Hand became subject matter. What exactly did he have to say there?
