Sadly, on Monday morning here we have four children waking up without their dad and uh their mum without her partner. A very, very sad story. It was
meant to be a night of celebration. October 2025 and locals gathered to mark a Jay victory in the North Cork town of Donorail.
Gardi are continuing to appeal for information and are urging witnesses or anybody who was around Donerail village between midnight and two AM on Sunday to come forward.
But as the party continued into the early hours, tensions began to rise on the town's main street. And a short time later, local postman Barry Daly was beaten to death with a golf club outside his own home.
Father of five Barry Daly was found in a pool of blood at his home in Donorale in the early hours of October twelfth last year. He had suffered catastrophic injuries to his jaw, leaving him unable to breathe.
Now, twenty-one year old Alex Deedee has been sentenced to life in prison for his murder. As Alex
Deede was coming back from Barry Daly's house following the fatal assault towards Donrill's Main Street, he was heard talking. Ha. See how bad my face is, he said. I cannot wait to see Barry's face. Ha, a five-iron imprinted in his face.
I'm Kevin Doyle, and today on the Indo Daily, I'm joined by the Irish Independent Southern correspondent Ralph Regal to examine how a community celebration descended into a brutal killing. Ralph Regal, over the last few months you've been reporting on the murder trial of a Cork postman. And before we get into the events of that day, maybe start by telling us what we know about the victim.
Yeah, and I think that's one of the things, Kevin, that has made this such a very tragic case. Miss Justice Siobhan Langford probably put it better than I could ever explain it when she said in the sentencing hearing that to know Barry Daly was to love Barry Daly because he just came across as an all-round good guy. He's a father of five. He was described as an exemplary father, very devoted husband, very much a popular figure within the North. Core community, specifically Donrill, which is where he lived. He was a postman, and some of the things that came across about him was that you know he just didn't do his job. A lot of elderly people it came out that you know sometimes Barry Daly would be the only person that some of these pensioners might see on a daily basis because of where they lived, rural isolation.
