Chapter 1: What personal updates do Jann and Sarah share at the start?

8.047 - 18.327 Jan Arden

Well, hello. Welcome to the Jan Arden Podcast. Today we are missing one of our co-hosts, Caitlin Green. Seems to be choosing Mexico over us, Sarah Burke.

0

18.968 - 21.072 Sarah Burke

I was going to say, don't feel too bad. She's in the sun.

0

21.753 - 45.107 Jan Arden

Yeah, she's in the sun. I've been looking at her Instagram. There's some morning, some a.m. pina coladas going on. Which I do think do have alcohol in them. What is it about drinking on a holiday? You seem sometimes exempt from hangovers. Like I'm seriously telling you this because it seems like a thing. And I remember going on holidays and being able to drink alcohol in

0

Chapter 2: How does Jann's wedding planning tie into the music industry?

45.087 - 67.801 Jan Arden

in a way that was much more reckless than my normal life. I mean, my alcoholism aside, I'm talking about when I was younger, going on holidays, it was like you could, like, drink beer, like, even in my 30s, you know, drinking beer or wine or, like, pina coladas in the morning and not feel... near as hungover as I would be if I was drinking a fucking pina colada in Calgary, Alberta.

0

68.081 - 82.474 Sarah Burke

A friend of mine's boyfriend is also in the same place as Caitlin right now. I think it's Los Cabos. And something about not being able to go in the ocean, but on most, I think, oceanside vacations, just getting in the saltwater makes you feel so much better. I don't know what it is.

0

82.494 - 92.543 Sarah Burke

I don't know the medicine behind it, the science behind it, but ocean water, you're hungover, you get in there, you're totally fine. Happened to me, Costa Rica.

0

92.523 - 112.607 Jan Arden

Is it the vitamin D? Is it the relaxed state that your body is in? You literally are probably drinking for the right reason. I think that doesn't sound right. I don't think drinking is ever a good idea, and I mean that. But I think when you get home from work...

0

Chapter 3: What is the CNN investigation into the online rape academy about?

112.587 - 135.061 Jan Arden

And you have a couple glasses of wine and, you know, the kids are off doing their thing and they're on their iPads or whatever. And you have this moment to reward yourself. I feel like it's a very different thing for your body to be joy-filled on a holiday and having like a really sugary alcohol-laced drink. I don't know. It's a meal. It's a meal. I guess.

0

135.321 - 154.69 Jan Arden

But if you guys have any tips about this or experiences it, we'd love to hear from you. So go on to the Jan Arden Pod website and there's a little microphone button that you can hit and leave us a voice note. Anyway, lots to talk about today. Personal updates. I want to know what's going on with you. I already know what's going on with me, but I want to know what's going on with you.

0

154.83 - 166.545 Jan Arden

And you just finished telling me that you've got a head cold because you are an extra parent right now. You You are the parent plus. You may not think of yourself that way, but you know, you're getting cold because you're around kids.

0

166.985 - 186.947 Sarah Burke

I don't know. I really have no idea. But yeah, like at the beginning of last week, I was feeling a little something. And then with all the weather changes, it got the best of me. I was a mess all weekend. I'm really bad at sitting still. So I tried my best to relax, but yeah, so I'm over it now. I can breathe. You know, one nostril was completely plugged up until last night.

0

186.987 - 190.03 Sarah Burke

So I'm in a very exciting position today with two nostrils working.

190.28 - 198.711 Jan Arden

Oh, God. When the two nostrils, when the second nostril kicks in, you feel like a whole new person. You and Dan do quite a few things with his kids.

Chapter 4: What statistics are shared regarding sexual violence against women?

198.831 - 200.934 Jan Arden

And I'm just wondering, you look like you're having a ball.

0

201.194 - 212.949 Sarah Burke

I look forward to like next weekend. We're talking about the kids and him coming here and doing some Toronto activities. So that will be fun. But yeah, like a weekend away, it was like kind of like, you know.

0

213.189 - 217.114 Jan Arden

Will he stay at your house with the kids? What does that look like?

0

217.094 - 236.681 Sarah Burke

Yeah, we've done that twice now. They like call it the hotel, you know, they're excited about staying at the hotel. But especially if we are going to like hop on the GO train or something, do an activity in the city. There's like a cool Lego thing up in North York near the Downsview Airport right now. So lots of options. We'll see what happens there.

0

236.722 - 247.857 Sarah Burke

But yeah, mostly just, yeah, like keeping them busy. That's the whole thing. Like you want to have like a packed day so that like when it's bedtime, they're like passing out. I don't know if that's the same over there.

248.157 - 270.285 Jan Arden

We've mostly just had the kids, obviously, the little kids, at the Iceland home. And it's a ride having them. I'm usually there, you know, lately I've been going like 10 days, 14 days. But I'm only allowed so much time in Iceland. People have asked me this question a lot. You know, are you moving to Iceland? No, I'm not moving to Iceland. It would be virtually impossible.

270.585 - 286.672 Jan Arden

Like any other country in the world, folks, there are rules. You can't just pick up and move into a country. Whether your intention is to marry an Icelandic person or not, it is a very arduous, long process. I'm very proud to be Canadian. Thortis loves that I'm Canadian.

Chapter 5: How do Jann and Sarah discuss the impact of online communities on real-life behavior?

286.732 - 313.791 Jan Arden

She loves that we have this place here. But it works. You're allowed 90 days out of every 180. And that is a moving process. So what I mean is... You have an app you're tracking, you said, right? Yes. It's called a Schengen. So Schengen is a program that is shared by the European nation. And it does exactly that. It's this moving 180. So let's say that I went for the month of December.

0

313.771 - 330.936 Jan Arden

So the December goes by. I leave December the 30th. Now the calendar is moving. So let's say now all of January, I'm not there. Well, it erases basically as the scale moves, like in 180 day period, it's constantly moving.

0

330.916 - 334.159 Sarah Burke

It's like accruing vacation days almost, like in a workforce. Yeah?

0

334.179 - 356.38 Jan Arden

Yeah. I'm not moving there. And I'm usually there half the time with Thortis, just on our own. And then half of it is with the kids. And I make sure that I'm going so that I am there when the kids are there. Because I love doing things with them. Although, as you say, getting colds and things like that. It happens. Yeah. Well, I've lived alone. I've been a bachelor living alone in the trees. Yeah.

0

Chapter 6: What insights are shared about emotional maturity in relationships?

356.4 - 358.482 Jan Arden

And, you know, I'm someone that didn't even get COVID.

0
0

359.249 - 383.67 Jan Arden

Well, you know, you wonder why, because I'm not around people that much. Even on the road, I very seldom wandered out of my dressing room. Anyway, my news is I hit the road here on Tuesday. I've got a whole bunch of stuff coming up, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. I'm receiving a very... I feel very honored to be getting the Royal Conservatory. That's some kind of a nod to me.

0

383.71 - 406.716 Jan Arden

I don't know if it's a... No big deal. Yeah. Well, no, it's really cool. Russ and I are going to play five songs with the String Quartet to kind of celebrate the Royal Conservatory. I think they do a lot for young musicians. Speaking of which, we're going to be speaking to a young musician that left us a voice note last week. And she was basically saying it's tough being a new artist.

0

406.776 - 421.596 Jan Arden

It's tough getting exposure on a song. It's tough getting crowdfunding. And so... You know, when we did the podcast, I said, let's have this young woman on. So we're going to spend a few minutes. We're going to get to know her, where she's at, what she wants to be doing.

421.917 - 433.755 Sarah Burke

And yeah, her name is Suzanne Tripp, actually. And she's like country sort of folk. But we'll talk to her for a few minutes at the end of the episode because Jan's amazing and invited her on. So there you go.

433.735 - 446.991 Jan Arden

I think it'll be really interesting to see what the landscape looks like for young artists. I think we all know that it's all about shameless self-promotion and social media weighs heavily into this stuff. You've been in radio for decades, Sarah.

447.492 - 447.812 Sarah Burke

Yes.

Chapter 7: What is the significance of the app predicting death mentioned in the episode?

447.832 - 460.581 Jan Arden

And you know very well how much the game has changed since you've started and how you break records and how records are played and how program directors work. And all of that stuff. So maybe you can shed some light.

0

461.542 - 477.156 Sarah Burke

For sure. And, you know, we're going to be talking with Strombo on an upcoming episode. And I feel like this is something that he is, you know, it's really cool talking to people who have been around the industry for a while about how it's changed and how you still have an impact like today versus back in the day.

0

477.216 - 491.27 Sarah Burke

Also, on that note, at the end of the show, we are going to give away a pair of tickets to our live show. So two things to tease that are coming up. So with our live departure. For anyone who's been following the adventures of Jan showing up at live shows, this one.

0

491.59 - 492.051 Jan Arden

Oh, yeah.

0

492.231 - 493.893 Sarah Burke

We'll make sure you and Caitlin are there.

494.154 - 494.454 Jan Arden

Yeah.

494.474 - 508.953 Sarah Burke

Yeah. St. Lawrence Center for the Performing Arts. It's on the east end of town in the Jane Mallett Theater. Yes. It's going to be wonderful. Yeah, we'd love to see you. On the topic of music, did you see anything on your socials about Coachella? Like, we weren't there, but did you see?

509.013 - 518.704 Jan Arden

Saw a lot of stuff on Coachella. I mean, I really had a laugh at so many of the posts where people were literally preparing their Coachella thing. even though they weren't going.

518.745 - 519.818 Sarah Burke

Yeah.

Chapter 8: How does Suzanne Tripp's story exemplify resilience in the music industry?

549.295 - 572.704 Jan Arden

You know, one of the more famous pairings was, of course, Sabrina Carpenter and Madonna. And the crowd went absolutely crazy. I watched, you know, a couple of minutes of it. And, you know, A, Madonna looks fucking fierce. Her body, she works so hard. You know, say what you will about plastic surgery. You really can't do that with a body.

0

572.724 - 595.916 Jan Arden

A body requires fitness, working out, weightlifting, cardio, a constant attention to your food and nutrition and how you look after yourself. So kudos to Madonna. And, you know, she held her own. And to have a song like that played to tens of thousands of people that they know every word... So crazy. To have one of those songs in your career. And she's got 30 of those songs in her career.

0

596.016 - 598.64 Jan Arden

So it was impressive and very cool to see.

0

598.66 - 620.051 Sarah Burke

20 years ago, Madonna first performed at Coachella. So this was like a very full circle moment. And the first time she performed it was Confessions on a Dance Floor, part one in America. Now, she just announced that she is actually putting out Confessions 2. It's a sequel to her 2005 record Confessions on a Dance Floor. And then also I knew Caitlin would love this.

0

620.933 - 638.683 Sarah Burke

She started talking like woo-woo astrology on stage in the middle of it all about like the moon and Aries and all these things. I don't know much about what that means, but Madonna did spend a few minutes with the Coachella crowd letting them know that we need to communicate with each other better. And that's what I meant. Okay. I mean, you can't argue that. No.

639.003 - 656.838 Sarah Burke

The question that I like really wanted to ask you as a musician about this, though, and, you know, to our listeners, please weigh in. Send us a voice note. So, Jan, you're, you know, the elder in this situation, someone who has like the Madonna experience. Who would you love to perform with, be paired with where like two generations could come together?

656.978 - 658.581 Sarah Burke

And to our listeners, who would you love to see?

660.097 - 683.045 Jan Arden

Oh, Lord. Well, me, I'd be out there with Bette Midler, or I'd be up there with Barbra Streisand, or I'd be up there with James Taylor. I'd be up there with Cat Stevens. Like, I think Cat Stevens would blow people's minds, like, to be up there singing anything with him. But like, let's say you're the Madonna. If I'm the Madonna, I mean, with a young person, I see what you're asking me.

683.926 - 717.978 Jan Arden

I think there's an artist called Loreen. She's Swedish. Her huge song was Tattoo. She won the European Song Contest, Eurovision. But Loreen, it's L-O-R-E-E-N, Loreen. Or it could be L-A-U-R-E-E-N. I don't remember the spelling. But she is unbelievable. Like just to sing Harmony on Tattoo with her would be so amazing. She wears these nail things that are five inches long. They're like talons.
