Chapter 1: What exciting news do they share at the beginning?

0.189 - 10.873 Akiva Schaffer

Hey, everybody. The podcast is about to start, but before it does, we have some very exciting news. Which one of you wants to tell them? I'll say it at the same time, guys. One, two, three. Pop stars on Netflix right now.

0

10.893 - 16.295 Jorma Taccone

Man, I felt like that was a cruel tee-up, Seth. It seemed like maybe it was going to be something.

0

16.776 - 35.045 Akiva Schaffer

I'm sorry, bud. Pop Star, which is a fantastic film, and I look forward to doing what I'm certain will be a two, if not three-part episode of this podcast. Pop Star is now available on Netflix, and it's never been on Netflix. And a lot of you are going to watch it for the first time based on, you know, how it did in theaters. Thanks for calling it a film, Seth. That was nice of you.

35.085 - 38.887 Akiva Schaffer

It's a great movie. I love it so much. I'm genuinely so excited that it's on Netflix.

Chapter 2: What is 'Pop Star' and why is it important?

39.107 - 44.53 Jorma Taccone

We got all kinds of credits on that movie. Producers, actors, writers. Two out of three of us were directors.

0

44.83 - 48.032 Akiva Schaffer

And fucking real producers, too. PGA fucking approved, guys.

0

48.332 - 50.733 Jorma Taccone

Oh, yeah. Full-on PGA. Everyone knows what that is.

0

51.674 - 57.116 Akiva Schaffer

And unlike NYPD Blue, you guys had the courage to show a full dick.

0

57.437 - 62.579 Jorma Taccone

That's right. We show butt right away. We get that out of the way in the first, like, three minutes there's a butt.

62.839 - 69.623 Akiva Schaffer

I was like, where's he going with this? Again, they paved the way, though. All respected. Yeah. Without Blue, Blue walked so you could run.

70.157 - 78.924 Jorma Taccone

We name check Dennis Franz and we show. And like NYPD Blue, we had the courage to drop our Chicago accents.

79.064 - 90.814 Akiva Schaffer

Wait, there's something I want to say. Oh, I just feel like, you know what? We've never actually called on you, Quaid Army, but this is it. Quaid Army, let's get the views on this. Get it trending, guys. Trending.

90.834 - 91.114 Seth Meyers

Top 10.

Chapter 4: What memorable sketches did they discuss?

3747.261 - 3762.611 Jorma Taccone

Yeah. One is just untouched and one of them is lightly touched, but it's still the same thing. But yeah, I just changed the timing of it. When you did that shot though, Keev, I remember being in edit and it's the closest we've ever been to like being like how Travis Scott's friends all are when he first plays them his songs. Yeah, being like...

0

3763.371 - 3771.396 Unknown

Like, oh, fog! It's fucking so dope! It looks so huge! I'm like, oh, we're about to run this shit! Like, we were so amped.

0

3772.377 - 3774.799 Jorma Taccone

You slid the shot in half of the split screen!

0

3775.879 - 3797.754 Akiva Schaffer

I remember feeling like that when it played at air, too, of just, like, even though, because I did feel like it had sort of stunned the audience a little bit, and so there maybe wasn't the laughter necessarily, but it felt like it was like, oh, shit, I think that this is going to really hit in a different, I mean, it was it was it's always crazy to see it play live.

0

3798.094 - 3800.775 Akiva Schaffer

But that one in particular was like, oh, shit.

3801.396 - 3820.987 Jorma Taccone

But if you want to jump to that night to what Seth was talking about and what you're talking about, I remember feeling disappointed. Do you want to talk about the footage situation? I mean, we could talk about for a second. I don't know how interesting it is, but yeah. So one of the crazy things along the journey of the video was that. I guess the DP made the choice.

3821.267 - 3833.496 Jorma Taccone

Yeah, who we used again. What did we use Aaron Platt? It was Aaron Platt. And we used him again on something more recent. Oh, you know what he did? When we did a reshoot on Popstar, when we were getting additional stuff for videos, he shot like the Emma Stone music video on Popstar, right?

3833.596 - 3849.526 Jorma Taccone

Nice guy, fun dude. Yes. And could really shoot. Keeve specifically, I believe, had asked him to make it feel really frenetic and crazy. Yes. And he was doing this trick while he was shooting footage where he was popping the lens in and out. Which is great. He was popping it off of the camera. Yes.

3850.247 - 3871.743 Jorma Taccone

So I just have this vivid memory, Keith, correct me if you feel this is different, of going in there the first day of looking at the footage. We shot it on an off week, and then top of the week of SNL, we started cutting at 30 Rock. and going in and looking through the footage and being like, we can't make the video. It's all just fucking flares. There's no fucking footage.
