The understanding is Nineveh is a wicked city. It is sinful. It is walking against God. It is practicing idol worship.
Nineveh is not in Israel. Nineveh is in Syria. That means that people who were not Jews could be saved. In the Old Testament, people who are not Jews can still escape going to some kind of hell. In fact, there is no explicit version of hell as we understand it in the Old Testament. It is... There is an afterlife. There is the place where the spirits of the dead go.
And there are certainly good parts of it and bad parts of it. But there's no... If you're not Jewish, you go into a fiery pit. Come forward into the New Testament. How does a person who has never even heard of Christ accept Christ as his Savior? You can't. Exactly.
And while there is no explicit part of the Bible that I can think of that says people who have never encountered Christianity or knowledge of Jesus Christ, there's nothing I can think of that says that those people go to heaven. I've also come across nothing that says they go to hell.
Hmm.
considering there is, for a very long time, really up until the Reformation, there was an understanding that there is a place in between heaven and hell, purgatory. That suggests to me that there are a number of ways to get there. The only way to guarantee getting there in Christianity is by being Christian. And you have to be Christian, not just profess Christianity.
