Welcome back to the Mad Podcast. Today my guest is Eric Bernhartson, the CEO of Modo Labs, a fast-growing serverless platform for AI engineers. We started the conversation with a broad overview of the compute layer of the AI stack. More recently, it's been about
Bunch of newfangle. I call them like the alt clouds, Core Weave, Lambda. Then covered modal in terms of product use cases. Autod inference is the majority of our use case. People using us for batch, people using us for large-scale video encodings, building web services, and go to market. It just turned out that targeting early data influencers, talking about the product, giving away hats online on Twitter, that's always worked for us. And then close with a bunch of lessons learned. Building technical products and technical teams. In the early days, you can get very far with almost no management if you just hire fairly smart people and just give them the context.

Yeah, I'm excited to do this. Um as I was prepping for this, I was on the on on your website looking at the list of uh angel investors that you've had. And I think we've had uh just about everyone, at least on the angel side on your cap table. So we we had uh Bar uh from Monte Carlo on the pod, we had Barry from Hex, uh we had just just just recently Jordan. From Mother Duck, uh Tristan from DBT. I'm I'm probably forgetting one or two, but he's saying it's it's funny, like the whole group. Yeah. So it was long overdue that. Yeah. Yeah, it's like the data influencer.
The that's the thing. Uh so you are the CEO of uh Model Labs building a uh fantastic infrastructure company right here in New York. Let's start with a quick elevator pitch. Like the th thirty or forty five second version of what Modal Labs does.
Yeah, so so modal makes it easy to build, scale, uh, and deploy applications in the data, AI, machine learning realm. So so we basically you can think of it as like we take You you you write a little bit of Python code and we take that code, we stick it in a container, we execute that in the cloud in a way we don't have to think about infrastructure. You don't have to think about GPUs, you don't have to think about, you know, the cloud vendors. Uh we just magically make that work and scale it to very large uh, you know, thousands of GPUs potentially.
I thought a fun way to start the conversation to make it um interesting to a broad group of people uh would be to talk about the uh AI compute space in in broad strokes. So uh you know, like people have heard of um uh of GPUs, obviously, people have heard of GPU clouds, maybe people have heard of like inference clouds and platforms. Forums and they've heard of NVIDIA, Modo Labs, uh, Grok, Lambda, Core Weave, all those companies. If you had to Categorize the space, like who does what, um, the different approaches? What would you say? How would you explain it to somebody that wants to learn about the space?
Yeah. And and and by the way, I think it's funny because it's like the typical VC, like, you know, what's the market map? And and I'm my role is like there is no, like we defy it, like we do all of it. Yes, yes. And I
And I'll say as a as a claim to fame, in your blog post that introduced Modo Labs uh whenever that was three years ago, you you you hyperlinked my uh market map as a as a way of showing the nonsense in the space. No, no, no.
I I don't think it was a nonsense. I think I was just pointing out how much stuffed it. I love your market map, by the way. There used to be a lot.
I I'm gonna take this and gonna clip it um and uh have it in the short that ereclows my marketing people for the
record. You know, I I built you know we will get back to that later. You built a thing called Luigi many years ago and it it used to be kind of you could see it, but like every year it's getting like smaller and smaller. I don't know if it's still, but I use uh every time it comes out I zoom in and I try to find it.
