Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.

What tips does the crew offer for DIY European mounts?

Spencer Neuharth 0:53
I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Randall Brody, Seth, Laura, Reva, and Cade. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meat Eaters 4 Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. There is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing. We're starting today's show with a mailbag question. You can send your mailbag questions to trivia at TheMeatEater.com. With the subject line mailbag, Drew Madison says, Does the crew have any tips for DIY European mounts? I've decided I'll do my own buck the next time I kill one.
Brody Henderson 1:28
Brody's the man.
Spencer Neuharth 1:29
Brody, DIY arrow mounts. Give Drew some advice.
Brody Henderson 1:33
I assume he's talking about, uh, just assume it's a white tail in a pot, right? Not using beetles. Um, don't overcook them. Like don't get it on a rolling boil. Just a really light simmer with a bubble now and then. Um, don't put bleach in there. That'll ruin it. Put, put some dish soap in there. That'll help cut some fat.

How does the trivia game incorporate conservation themes?

Brody Henderson 1:57
And, uh, Just, uh, do it, start it like two hours, say, and check it. And then just keep going for 30 minute segments until everything's like falling off easily. Like if you got to like get in there and pry shit off, it needs more time. Yeah. That's why you should be careful with the nose bones. They're going to like, sometimes you can't help it. Those nose bones are going to just fall off after cooking for a while, but you can super glue them right back in there.
Spencer Neuharth 2:26
Skin that head right away. Every day that goes by, the harder it gets to pull that hide out. You think it gets easier? Totally disagree.
Brody Henderson 2:33
You want to keep the moisture in there? If you skin that thing when you kill it out in the field, that skull, all that shit on that skull starts drying up and it turns into cement on the skull. leave the hide on the skull, and then skin it right before you cook it.
Spencer Neuharth 2:49
I think it's just such a pain, though, to get that hide off once it's been on there for a few weeks.
Brody Henderson 2:53
You can throw it in there with the hide on and cook that thing and then peel it right off. I have three or four bull elk skull caps in the barn with the little rectangle of hair. And I tell myself... I really need to get those off.

What are the rules for the trivia competition?

Brody Henderson 3:10
Still there. Still there. Actually, my bull elk from this past fall is still just sitting in my garage, skull on. Okay. And, like, I tell this to, uh, Giannis does the same thing as me, too, but, like, when we're all together for that youth hunt, and there's, them kids are killing all kinds of bucks, um, when you skin those things, your skull, like, you can't, you can't take that thing in to get tested for CWD, and if you're in an area, like, So if you leave the hide and a little bit of that neck meat on there, then they can test the thing if you're inclined to get your thing tested.
Unknown 3:46
I got a buddy who killed a mule deer in 2022 and never skinned it out. How do you think that would fare? Just throw it in the pot?
Brody Henderson 3:53
It's in the freezer?
Unknown 3:54
No, it's been sitting open air in his garage since 22. In his garage? Oh, wow. Well, now he lives in an apartment. Single?
Randall Williams 4:01
Single?
Unknown 4:02
Yeah.
Spencer Neuharth 4:04
Very single. I'd say for that he needs to do the, is it maceration? Is that the word?

Which mountain man lived past the age of 50?

Spencer Neuharth 4:09
I feel like that's become a more sexy way to do it.
Brody Henderson 4:12
I did that this year. It's nasty. Yeah. Giannis has a tub going. I'm like, it's cool, but why wait months for something you could do in a few hours?
Unknown 4:26
There you go.
Brody Henderson 4:27
You ever gone the pressure washer route?
