What is the significance of the Capitol Hill press conference on Epstein victims?

Ben Meiselas 0:00
So, of course, today is the big uh press conference of the victims of Epstein and Ghilaine that's taking place on Capitol Hill. So during the various uh congressional committees, the MAGA Republicans are desperately trying to uh block the Epstein files from uh being released, and they're trying to cause distractions and they're pulling all of these stunts. I mean, one of the things that That we're getting word about is that the Trump regime is saying that uh it is a hostile act if you sign on to the discharge petition, um, which is a bipartisan resolution by Thomas Massey, a Republican from Kentucky, and Democratic Congress member Rokana from uh California. And because MAGA Mike Johnson is not. Not uh introducing the resolution himself on the floor as of now.
Ben Meiselas 0:54
They're doing what's called a discharge position petition where you have to collect the necessary signatures one by one in order to pass the resolution and go around uh the speaker of the House, in this case, MAGA Mike Johnson. So the statement from the Trump regime is helping Thomas Massey and liberal Democrats with their attention seeking. While the DOJ is fully supporting a more comprehensive file release effort from the oversight committee, it would be viewed as a very hostile act to the administration. So Trump's saying if you say release these files and you sign on to the Massey Kana bipartisan discharge petition to that resolution, it's a hostile act against the administration. But let me bring you in.
Ben Meiselas 1:40
Inside the House Oversight Committee, so you can see what's taking place in the various committees here as well. House oversight and rules and what's generally uh taking place. And Democratic Congress member uh uh McGovern really exposed this beautifully when he called James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, in front of uh in front of McGovern. And McGovern McGovern was like uh Democratic Congress member McGovern is like, so do you support the Massicana resolution, bipartisan resolution? And then Comer's like, Oh, it's very disappointing you're trying to politicize it here. Play this clip. I mean, do you do you support
James McGovern 2:21
Report the massy counter resolution, yes or no?
James Comer 2:25
We're already doing it. And and the look mister No, the discharge petition does not have the force of law. We've already subpoenaed it.
James McGovern 2:32
You can be you can say no and I'll let you know. Mr. McGuire,
James Comer 2:36
it's very disappointing that you're trying to politicize this. We're trying to get answers. We're trying to do everything that's in this discharge petition but but you're trying to politicize it. No,
James McGovern 2:46
I'm I'm I no, I it's a yes or no question. It's not a trick question. I mean we've already done what the discharge
James Comer 2:53
petitions asking.
James McGovern 2:54
Do you think the resolution saying to keep doing what you were doing is better than a bill that could become law, the bill the bill has no force of law. It has no force of the law. You're just trying to do a political stunt. Yeah. Well, I was asking a question, he interrupted me. It's a simple yes or no question. Simple yes or no question. We're already doing it. All right. Well, that's not a yes or no. But but do you think the resolution saying to keep doing what you were doing is better than a bill that can become law, which would require the release of all the five?
James Comer 3:31
It doesn't have the force of the law. It's just a political stunt. It's just a political stunt. And and you know this
James McGovern 3:37
is a resolution.

How does the bipartisan discharge petition aim to force release of Epstein files?

James McGovern 3:38
Um the uh the kind of is a uh uh massey kind of bill. Uh would become law. If all you Republicans want everything released, then you know you could vote for it. And then if he decides to veto it, you could override the veto.
Ben Meiselas 3:50
As Rokana says, Massey is a conservative. I'm a progressive. This is about standing with survivors and protecting kids. The people playing politics are the ones not signing our petition to force the release of the Epstein files. And Democratic Congress member Jim McGovern says, I asked a simple yes or no question. Do you support the bipartisan Massey Connor bill to demand the release of the Epstein files? Files.
