Why are the latest economic numbers painting a grim picture?
We're getting a lot of data these days, and with all the stuff that the Trump regime is doing, a lot of the data looks grim. And whether we're looking at consumer expectations, whether we're looking at interest rates, whether we're looking at the price of gas, whether we're looking at labor statistics, whether we're looking Uh at inflation statistics, you know, you name it, they come from a variety of sources. Some come from within the government, some come from outside of the government, there are consumer surveys that are done by universities, there are statistics that come from a Bureau of Labor statistics, you know, that are published here. Um, I think sadly they all tell a very uh grim story of of of of where things can be headed at at a at a high level.
I mean you can find certain areas and say, well Consumer expectations low, but consumers are still spending. And you can say, you know, you you you you you you can look at these numbers and and with the complexity that they are, but I think one of the issues is we know that Donald Trump has spent uh his entire life lying about numbers. Uh he we know he's done that. We he had a civil case where we saw he inflates and deflates, uh depending on uh how it suits him and in very egregious ways. You know, he'll say 21 trillion dollars. He'll just make up numbers. I brought in 21 trillion and it's like none none of that makes any sense. You know, uh we especially when you look at the budget, uh the in the budget deficit increasing, the debt increasing to
To over $40 trillion. And so the one concern that I think we need to be thinking about, and we've been talking about this a lot, is the numbers coming out of the government, Bureau of Labor statistics, and coming from other agencies. Can we rely on them still? Are they under threat? And as we get into territory, where the numbers that are being reported are looking not great. It's an understatement. Um is there gonna be an impulse? by s an impulsive liar in Donald Trump to fully infect the apparatus within the government and the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other economic data that's coming up. I want to bring in Justin Wolfers, chief economist at the Midas Touch Network. He is the founder and runs his own YouTube channel at Platypus Economics.
So make sure you all check that out. And so Justin, there's been a few red flags that I've just seen, and I'll call them red flags. Yep. Which have been uh politiciz uh efforts to politicize some of the data and rule changes that seem geared towards changing the formula and left to his own vices, I think Trump would try to do that. The way the economic data has been produced has created a lot of fortifications around it to try to avoid the type of intrusion. But there have been a lot of red flags that are worrying me. But you're close to this data. You teach this data, you rely on this data. You'll be able to see. if things are so different than where than what and compare 'em private to public data. So so so talk to us.

Yeah, thanks for the question, Ben. And I might be the only bloke on earth who is so excited to talk about data that I'm I love the question. I I love you coming to me on this. Um look it The president has pretty much tried to invent a post truth society. that you know, he lies with such frequency That if we lose track of the truth, we lose our bearings. We don't know who we are. We don't know where we are. We don't know what our social problems are. And if they exist, then we can't but we can't measure it, then we can't solve them. So the first thing I want to say, Ben, is don't let the bastards beat us. Um having said that, let me try and explain what's going on because it's a little tricky. Okay, so here's first of all the good news.
We have official statistical agencies in the United States. They come with three letter acronyms. They're the Bureau of Labour Statistics, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Census Bureau. These are independent agencies who are told go ahead and measure the truth and report it fearlessly.
