Practice day for the new CRL transport loop yesterday. Uh had the fire evacuation, inability to isolate the fire alarms today. It's the first real rush hour and the new future, I guess. Mark Lambert is GM Rail Services with Auckland Transport and is with us. Mark, morning. Morning Mike.
How many passengers are expected on the CRL today and why is it higher than usual?
How are you? Very well indeed. Are you there? Have you seen it? What's happening?
Um, yeah, we've been just had our um second conference call at the call centre today at the conf at the control room. Um going reasonably well this morning. Um yesterday was just um incredible. The first uh day of opening the CRL, three new stations, new service patterns.
What new service patterns and station changes should commuters be aware of?
higher service frequencies. Um and it was out on the network all day yesterday. It was genuinely great to see so much excitement amongst Aucklanders and actually people traveling from across the country. Have you got any
sense of what to expect today numbers wise?
Yeah, um so normally we carry um around sixty thousand boardings a day. We're expecting the network to be busier today, obviously. Uh we're operating a lot more capacity than we did, for example, last week. Um, but we're really confident that Uh the service will be operating really well today, but we do encourage people, give it a bit of time.
When will Auckland Transport know if the CRL is delivering increased rail patronage?
You'll be operat you'll be travelling on new services potentially for your journeys. Um make sure you understand uh the new service patterns. And look, we've got loads of people around the network at the stations to help out if you need to um ask anybody for some support.
What do you think this is? Is this a a build it and they will come thing? In other word w when will we know whether this has been worth it in terms of new patronage and more people using public transport or not?
Yeah, look, um really good question. I mean, obviously this is uh a long term network improvement. Um uh this is the biggest change to the Auckland Metropolitan Passenger Network for decades, if ever.
What long‑term ridership targets does AT have for the CRL over the next few years?
Um so it's gonna take a bit of time to bed in and for people to get used to it. Um but we've got um expectations that over the next couple of years at at the most uh we'll be increasing uh rail use from around forty million passengers. passenger trips per year to around twenty two million um over the next eighteen months or so. So we've got some really um clear targets and we're just um really trying to uh reduce as much as we can a little bit of that congestion on the road network and get people onto rail.
Let's see how she goes. Appreciate it very much. Mark Lambert, who's the GM of rail services for AT. I mean you couldn't make up yesterday though, could you? Uh not only a fire and a fire happens, it's to quote somebody from the news yesterday, one of those things. But then it was such a New Zealand thing that the people who turn up to deal with it didn't know how to isolate the alarms because God forbid they would have thought of that beforehand.
