Now, how would this work? You would say to it, I want a white T-shirt, size medium, no more than $40, buy locally in New Zealand, and then it would find it for you, and it would actually complete that transaction?
That's the goal. And even for it to be able to work autonomously on an ongoing basis. So look, go and order my groceries for me and work out where's the best place to get them. You know my shopping list. Go and make that happen. But to start with, there will be a human in the loop component. So it's your card. You will get a verification request to verify that you're happy to make the purchase. But over time,
How will AI agents handle shopping transactions autonomously?
Once you get confident, I think the idea from Visa and from ChatGPT is that you will be able to turn that off and you won't get asked anymore.
So, I mean, is that ever a future that we want? Because there are so many different ways that that white T-shirt can look. Surely you still need me to approve it.
Well, I think this is part of the challenge and part of, you know, probably what will make some people, you know, uncomfortable as we move into this, you know, autonomous tech-enabled future that, you know, we'll just go too far for some. So I think what will happen is it'll happen very, you know, it'll probably happen reasonably slowly and we'll get sort of comfortable with certain things happening. Hey, look, you know, I've been asked to approve my, you know, last year's worth of grocery transactions. They've all gone fine. Don't ask me about those anymore. It's not a problem, right?
Okay, so what happens though if something is bought and it turns up in your doorstep and you go, I didn't want that and you deny that you've approved it, who's liable then?
Well, this is the interesting thing. Visa are going to be getting extra information about what you've requested from ChatGPT that's going to come through in the transaction. You could think of it a little bit like, you know, if you go into and take money out of an ATM or you're in a store, then often there's a camera so it can see, you know, was it actually you that requested and made the purchase or made the transaction. So Visa are going to be getting details of your request fed through to them with the purchase. So if you say, look, this isn't what I wanted, they will be able to go through and see what you had actually fed in to the AI, and then they'll be able to verify whether it aligns or not.
So I think that will help them, whether it helps you where later it doesn't look so good, and whether maybe some people are a bit uncomfortable that Visa might be getting all this information around what they're feeding into their chatbot. or not, because these days there's still that separation. If you say, look, this wasn't my transaction, Visa doesn't have all the video footage and so on, they have to go back and try and get that and to join up the dots, or the bank does. And all of that kind of squeezes together into the data that Visa or your bank will hold.
