Who is Shaun White and why is he visiting New Zealand now?
The man who is the greatest snowboard athlete, sports athlete of all time, heading our shores to our shores this week. Record three Olympic gold medals in snowboarding half pipe, twenty three X Games medals for snowboarding and skateboarding, including fifteen golds, which is also a record. Sean White, he's launching the new Slow uh Snow League. This is the world challenge at Cadrona this weekend. Uh got a couple of our best in it as well. Anyway, Sean White is with us from New York. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Just bring us up to speed with your knowledge of New Zealand, what we're doing with snowboarding, snow sports, the central Otago, all of that sort of thing. What do you know of us?
Yeah, look, I've been coming to New Zealand for a long time. It's actually one of my favorite places to go. Amazing snow, but you know, the people are great, the food's amazing, and just the scenery is is uncomparable to anywhere I've ever been. Um so when I was thinking about bringing my event, the Snow League, you know, around the world. I was like, we have to stop in New Zealand. It's just that that that destination that I don't think a lot of people uh know about. So we're excited to shed some light on that.
Where is the Snow League at from conception to where it is right now to where you want it to be?
Yeah, look, we're heading into season two, which is really exciting for us. You know, this was something that, you know, I've dreamt of doing, you know, since I was a competitor and something I wish was around when I was competing. And and we're at this amazing point where we've really locked in a new format, a new style of competition, amazing athletes, and we're we're ushering in this new era of winter sports. So it's very exciting. Um, and I'm, you know, at the at the tip of the spear for all of it and it's been amazing to you know, have been a competitor my whole life and now um you know, calling up the people I used to compete with and saying, hey, look, like we're trying to change the sport through the Snow League.
I'd love your support. And um, you know, it's been a humbling experience to be on that side of the fence, being like, look, I'm I'm not competing with you anymore. Like, let me help. Let me use my voice in the sport to make it better for everyone else. And uh it's just been really nice to be in that position. So I definitely don't think we're where we're
What does Shaun love about New Zealand’s snow, people and scenery?
we wanna be, we're growing still, we're trying new things and that's why we're so excited to come to New Zealand. But uh the the future's looking bright.
Was that always part of your journey when you were competing? I mean uh do you think as a an elite athlete what's next? And part of the what next was something like this?
You know, I think this was something that's always been wanted in the sport, but no one really knew how to bring it about or could pull the right strings or levers to get it done. And I just kind of found myself in this perfect position where I had retired. I had a lot of, you know, um insight on the sport from the competitor side of things, but I also knew all the uh, you know, mountain owners and operators. I knew plenty of sponsors, I knew, you know, a way to get this done and I I I set my path. I've I found some amazing investors and people that would back us and, you know, really started this thing. But, you know, any competitor I feel like you know, you you know that that there's a ticking thought of you can only do a sport for so long competitively.
And I think as I started to make my way towards retirement, I was like, Well, what's next? You know, how can I still be involved in a sport that I love so much? And and this was just this natural kind of segue.
How has the sport changed from the day you started at the elite level to what we're doing now? And I'm talking everything from the tricks they do to the technology they use.
Yeah, I mean it's a great question. Basically when I started, you know, uh the half pipes and things were dug by hand and shovel and a lot of the mountains didn't really want snowboarders around.
