for me i've always thought about it as like standing on the fence in the middle of the company and the employee population and i'm advocating both ways right trying to be a true advocate for our people and making sure that when we make business decisions we think about them as a very key contributor or impacted right so that to me is a big way that people first shows up is at that decision as a decision discipline but then also making sure that the employees can find connection, can find alignment to the mission and the overall business goals. So I think true people-first leadership really means understanding that you're taking care of a team, right? And by doing that well, that is how you solve those business problems.

You're listening to the Modern People Leader podcast, where we go behind the scenes with today's top HR leaders and work experts. We talk to them about how they've gotten to where they're at, what they do every day, and what they see coming next for the future of work. Hope you enjoy. Laura, welcome to the Modern People Leader. How you doing?
Laura Tomaino 1:07
Great. Thanks so much for having me. We were just talking about this before we hit record, but you met Stephen like a year or two ago at an event in Boston. Is that right? We did. Yeah, we were at a, it was a random invite that I got through LinkedIn. And I was just at the start of like reconnecting my network and making sure that I had more like thought leaders in my life. And yes, Stephen and I met in a line waiting for food and we hit it off and we were just reminiscing about how fun that day was. Laura, there was a like a team building kind of activity and

And that involved a paper airplane. And Laura absolutely obliterated everyone else. She was the winner of that particular team bonding event. Clearly, I spent a lot of my youth practicing how to fold a good paper airplane. I only know like one, I guess like one style of paper airplane, like the classic just like fold over, fold over, and then one more fold over and you have it. Do you have like a special technique or what?
Laura Tomaino 2:15
I mean, so I learned that day that I do. It was named the fighter jet of paper airplanes. I don't know. I like to make it really streamlined, I guess, and have a really strong like center base. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I know how it like how I want it to feel. Picturing like a little guy like this big. It's actually like very short and has big wings. Oh.
Daniel Huerta 2:41
Yeah. It kind of waited. Yeah. There's some real like architectural design that she put into it. So like we had no chance. We had no chance. Oh my gosh. Well, Laura, we start every episode the same way. And that's with good news stories. Could be anything that's coming to mind for you. It could be personal. It could be work related. And we like for our guests to go first.
Laura Tomaino 3:02
Yeah. So I have three young kids. So I absolutely love cheering them on and being on the sidelines of whatever it is that they're up to at the time. So right now, it's spring sports, it's art shows, it's concerts, it's all these end of year celebrations that I have enjoyed over these past couple weeks. And we're in the heart of what I've heard recently referred to as Maycember. And so I got another... 30 days of this ahead of me beyond that beyond the the mom side which is one of my favorite parts of my life is the I love gardening and so I'm at that for anyone that is a gardener this is the best time of year because you're in the dream phase like you're I just bought a couple of additional raised beds so like I I'm dreaming I'm dreaming big but I got some plants in the ground uh this past weekend and so the vision's starting to come to life so those are my good news stories
Stephen Huerta 3:54
Congrats. I'll go next. So I turned 50 in 48 hours. And so you may be asking, why is this good news? Normally, it's not good news. Well, as my... 14 and 16-year-old daughters have shared with me. This means I'm old, old now. So I'm looking forward to leaning into that. I feel like the boomers set a precedent of like, you know what? I'm going to lean into just being old and give zero Fs. And so I'm not saying I'm going to give zero Fs, but I'm going to just lean into that a little bit. Maybe a few. Maybe a few. Yeah.
